WITH a Grade 3 win on heavy ground over 3m4f already on his resume the Gary Moore-trained Well Refreshed ticks a lot of boxes for the Coral Welsh National and his trainer has prepared the nine-year-old with the winter marathon in mind.
A ten-length winner of the Haydock Grand National trial last year, where he had last season's Welsh National winner Monbeg Dude a further nine lengths back in third, Well Refreshed also won the Sussex National at Plumpton by 28 lengths. The Sussex National, over half a furlong shorter than the 3m5½f Chepstow test, formed part of a streak of four wins in five starts last season for Well Refreshed, who started his winning off a mark of 100 and was raised to 142 after his Haydock win.
Pulled up on his final start last season, Well Refreshed disappointed when 14th of 16 on his seasonal debut at Cheltenham but ran a much better race to finish third in the London Marathon at Sandown earlier this month.
Speaking exclusively to the Racing and Football Outlook, which came out on Tuesday, Moore said: "He ran a terrific race to come third at Sandown last time and definitely came on for it.
"He's being prepared for the Welsh National at Chepstow over Christmas and I'd be looking for a good show. After all he won the Grand National trial at Haydock last season on heavy ground and, with the underfoot conditions usually pretty unforgiving at the Welsh track, he should be in his element."
Well Refreshed is the 10-1 joint second favourite with the race sponsors, though he is available at 12-1 generally.
