So many questions.
Will Sprinter Sacre rule again?
Can Big Bucks regain his crown?

not as keen since they brought the substitute rule in always entered in the early days would do as many as 20 lines best performance 2002-2003 finished 13th, I had put frosty canyon in as a possible for the hennessy but he ended up going hurdling and in the last week of comp he ran 2nd to deanos beano at 20/1 looked like winning turning in at ascot but got beat 8length in the end if he had won I would have finished 7th

From what I can see, same as last year. No subs, but now £10 per list (can't remember how much it was last season). Bonus races all look the same. Star Horse per list gets double points on the bonus point system.

£5 last year, expect much less entries as people realise the extra expense's exponential value against the futile chances of winning

Lost any interest in it now Sad Could not agree more. Is the Racing Post Guide to the Jumps book going to contain all the horses? Or are they going to do what they did on the flat and put extra horses in? |

A copy of the RP book arrived today. Not that impressed. 400 horses. Similar bonus races to last year I think without checking. Seems that there will be six monthly prizes, but the actual rules are a bit thin. Seems that full details will be published on the 1st Nov.

They've removed all handicaps from the bonus races, other than the PP and the Hennessey. About time too, I think. Why can't they run it until the end of Punchestown? That would be a better finale and might pull in more Irish entries as well.

No Substitutes and Star Horse points tote dividend capped at 50. 6 Monthly prizes. Much better than last year. Might have a go again.

Yes it's a shame that Punchestown is outside the competition. No need to be, as the flat comp really ought not start until Derby Day in June.
I rather like the idea of subs, or at least I don't like losing a horse to injury. Avoiding zeros is half the challenge, which is a shame as it should all be about finding winners. Think I might be in for ten lists, but still haven't got to a point where I can think about strategy, esp now that there are monthly prizes for grabs. Anyhow, good fun before the points start.  |

Bad idea increasing unit entry to £10. Last year they boasted that they had improved it by going for the fiver per line. No one cares obviously. Sale of Tote a disaster.

I'm struggling with sticking dynaste in...I want him in for my KG horse but don't want him in the paddy power, on the face of it you've got to races for the price of one horse so it should be a good thing, but I'm hating him over 20 furlongs as I think he miles better over 3 miles and don't think he can win the PP off his rating when it's not his best trip....I'm worried it could all go wrong and then they'll be scratching their heads wondering what went wrong and ballsing his chances up on boxing day.

Would be better to allow entrants 12 horses, with the top 10 counting. That way, you're not ruled out of the competition by an injured one or two, but, by not having substitutions, you don't suffer when everyone latches onto the big improver you identified before the competition began. Much better all round.

I think it is what it is. The chances of winning are exponential to the cost of entry, if your going to have one go because its £10 but two goes if its £5, then the Guy who is willing to spend £1000 has exactly the same proportional increase in his/her chances per budget ratio, whatever the price of entry.
Similarly if the selections are best 10 to count from 12 makes no difference because it is equally so for every entry. Injuries hit everyone even the big hitters, its just they have more good lines left because they entered more. At the end of the day its a balance between how much and how many against the chances of winning, and it doesn't matter how many entries an individual makes, if there are 32,000 entries then each one is 32,000/1 |

Yep, injuries work for you and against you. No point in making things easier as you will have more people finishing in a tie and splitting the prize money. A dead-heat, if you like!
I'm having two lists, with 7 horses the same in each one and 3 different. Excited. |

Got 22 lines-worth of cash from my small syndicate, so a decent entry, finalising the lines tonight. Much more ruthless with teh shortlist this year, down from 40-45 to 25. Looking forward to it!

Not sure how many lists nor how many to target at monthly prizes (probably more likely to land a monthly if shovelling enough particular horses in that direction). Down to a hard core of 15 that I am trying to boil down further. So time to get ruthless. Can't see any reason to look beyond the bonus races though. |

you can guarantee that those perming will be starring the paddy power race, it could get you off to a 75+ start...the only trouble is i'm only throwing 4 lists at it and it looks a brutal handicap to solve

ye would be...my friend is dodging the race as feels he has a good chance...think he is wrong though, to have a chance of winning you have to have the winner of this race as the syndicates will cover it and now the starring is in it is very important to nail it imo

The PP and Hen GC are the last part of the jigsaw for me, so I always wait for the final entries and now wondering whether to go for broke in the PP and try to cover both (v what I am prepared to commit in cash)?
Just taken a look at the Tote TTF site and I see that the most popular are pretty much as to be expected (well apart from Dyniste as 3rd most popular), which makes finding a successful darker horse more tempting (but not easy). I find it bizarre that with 400 horses are in the comp, the points system really doesn't incentivise the need to look outside the top echelon. Isn't it time they separated the grade one winners, hcappers and novices (say) and force a mix of horses? Anyhow, what is baffling though is that Sprinter Sacre is the No1 star horse, even though it will probably be odds-on for most races! Bring it on! |

should never change the format rem...its hard enough trying to fit 10 in never mind trying to plot your season around handicappers...
remember its double points on all his races not just his tote return...thats why sprinter is the star horse good idea really one horse who improves drastically could be mega scorer if starred |

Re - the early handicap bonus races.
Been through the Paddy Power final decs. Rajdhani Express is a good thing, get him in your lists. The Hennessy is a wee bit trickier with the unknown over Tidal Bay, will he run or not? All things considered, the fav Invictus, must have doubts about this one being up to the job after such a long lay off. Rocky Creek, Harry Topper & lord Windermere is where we should look for the winner. All 3 have the potential to improve further and that`s normally what you want when looking for the winner of this race |

It's double points on the tote returns only. Sprinter Sacre isn't the right horse to star.

I have very similar thoughts to you mactheknife...except Harry Topper's trainer has already said that he won't run in the Hennessy, they are talking about Lexus for him, although he's still in Betfair Chase.
I'll include him in one list - he could win something like Pillar as was and then become Gold Cup contender on soft ground or worse. Paddy Power difficult to fathom because ideally you want a progressive horse who will augment their points total later in season - I only really see Rajdhani Express, Colour Squadron and Tap Night (maybe) who fit that description. Finian's Rainbow is tempting too because he could be Ryanair contender on good ground if he retains his ability and his form last season was solely down to the ground, will be 11 by then though. I'm probably getting too fixated on the Paddy Power! |

OK, boiled the 20 PP horses down to three, one favourite but not in the comp, another at 33/1 and another well fancied.
 Two against the field is too risky and suspect that a key trend will be broken. Now for the Hen... |

There might be some value in swerving the PP. Easy to get seduced by the first bonus race, but it's only 50 points. Just don't want to miss out on the next Exotic Dancer.

Seems that the quality horses that might double up are in the Hen GC, rather than the PP, which is a race that can ruin some horses.

You can, I think, just about get away without having the Paddy Power winner if it's an outsider, which isn't in many lists, or it doesn't win another race this season.
If, however, it's one of the favourites, is in lots of list, and goes on to win at least one more race then it's pretty much essential you have it. |
