With the flat season drawing to a close these sprint handicaps take on a distinctly trickier feeling thanks to the ground conditions. The original field of twenty will be reduced come the off time and these type of events late in the year often produce something of an odd result. Still, it's worth having a cheeky punt to while away the Saturday afternoons hours and there are a few in here likely to enjoy it wet underfoot.
Last years winner Sirius Prospect hasn't progressed like connections thought he would this term. He may come on again next year. However, he did take this race twelve months ago in taking fashion off just one pound lower, so he'd be dangerous to rule out completely. He's proved frustrating to follow though so far in 2012 and can be passed over again in favour of something more appealing. The Haggas entrant, Heeraat, is progressing nicely and shows two course wins from two starts in the formbook. He looks classy and his last race has worked out very well with Jack Dexter and Gabrial's Lad landing prizes next time out. On the negative side, he's up a further 7lbs in against his elders now and tackling heavy for the first time. His current price isn't too appealing for all he has to overcome. Both Mass Rally and Misplaced Forturne were winners last time out and Colonel Mak makes a good deal of appeal following his fifth behind Captain Ramius up at Ayr. He'll relish the conditions today and has dropped to a mark that's starting to look tempting once more. The one that just gets his nose in front for me to part with my cash though is Bubbly Bellini. The Irish have a habit of coming over here and plundering these big handicaps and this gelded son of Mull Of Kintyre could add to the list. He's flown up the ratings of late and most recently took a Curragh six-furlong handicap by over three lengths. This will be tougher, there's no doubt about that, but he will love the ground and is on the upgrade. His price is now on the cusp of not being that much value, but the 10/1 on offer might look huge by ten to four on Saturday afternoon. He is the selection in what looks a tricky contest.
The race is cutting up badly, as is the first one the card. It's a shame as it destroys the visual joy somewhat, but it is always liable to happen at the end of year fixtures with the British weather playing it's part once again.

It is a crying shame. Last weekend I had Arnold Lane expecting 4 places and was relieved he finished in the money. Call me cynical but it seems every Saturday we see a handicap with a minimum 16 runners decimated by non-runners. By the same token, minimum fields of 8 runners too! It's annoying handicapping a big race in advance only to see it pay 3 places instead of the 4. Reserves should be put in place imo. I'm with you on this race going for the Irish raider myself. Good write up btw and GL.
