Quito De La Roque is set to attempt to defend his crown in the JNwine.com Champion Chase at Down Royal on 3 November.
Colm Murphy's charge got up close home to deny Sizing Europe in the three-mile feature but only ran once more last term, when third to Synchronised in the Lexus Chase at Leopardstown in late December.
"More than likely we'll start him in Down Royal again in the race he won last year. He seems well and is probably a bit more forward this year than last year. We had a good few stop starts," Murphy told At The Races.
"All's going well and fingers crossed he stays well for the next couple of weeks.
"I suppose we'll be looking at the obvious races like Leopardstown at Christmas and so forth.
"There was a lot of talk last year and we did plenty of dreaming about him.
"I think we'll take it race by race. He's had his fair share of problems and if he doesn't have any recurrence of those, you'd be hopeful of going for some of the better staying chases."

It appears quite a competitive field without 3 mile Superstars, but it would be a poor renewal if QDLR wins again.
Why do they keep trying 3m with Sizing Europe? It appears quite a competitive field without 3 mile Superstars, but it would be a poor renewal if QDLR wins again.
Kauto Stone surely won't stay 3m? Massively overrated horse in my opinion.
At first glance, the two that look most attractive are Blazing Tempo with the mares allowance and the trip-proven Follow The Plan providing it stays dry.
I like Silviniaco Conti but would be concerned that he doesn't seem to be at his best when fresh.

I'd be tempted by whichever Nicholls sends actually. Out of the Irish, I'd go with Joncol if it's soft to improve for his first run. Like everything though, it all depends on the prices.

If it's G-S at worst Sizing Europe might be of interest he was only chinned on the line last year because the ground was dreadful and he raced the Nicholls horse (Nightingale??) from so far out. First Liuetenant must surtely go close in this if he has any claims to be a Gold Cup contender.

Trainer Paul Nolan is confident Joncol will "strip a lot fitter" for his comeback run at Punchestown last week. The dual Grade One-winning nine-year-old was a hot favourite for the Star "Best For Racing Coverage" Chase on his first start since December, but could only finish third in the extremely testing conditions.
He is now set for a return to the highest level in the JNwine.com Champion Chase at Down Royal on November 3rd.
Nolan said: "Everything is fine with him. He was a bit rung-rusty and he looked big in the parade ring beforehand.
"The ground was so testing he just got very tired at the end due to the lack of a run.
"He seems well since, though, and will strip a lot fitter for the run.

This is a really poor G1 and the Charlie Hall looks more difficult. Don't think FL would win either as he only seems to act around Cheltenham. Can anyone remember a G1 chase with less 3m quality. If the ground is good SE will probably win and show this lot up. He's the only class in the race.

I agree Shock - Sizing only got beaten last season because the ground was awful and the before that only lost 4 l to Kauto Star (admittedly out of form). Even though he deosn't really get 3 miles he ought to be good enough to take care of this lot.
I disagree slightly about FL. If he's going to win the Gold Cup he has to go close in this because 14-20 lbs below Gold Cup form ought to be enough here.

FL's form apart from Cheltenham where it is top notch, really is average and is about 14-20lbs below Chelt form. Rating to me away from Chelt is about 140 and therefore no way would I look to back him. This field on Good at chelt I'd make him a strong favourite.
Just the way I see it.

Shock, that's fair enough, but what you're saying is he'd have to run 30-40 lbs better to win the Gold cup than you think he can at tracks other than Cheltenham. I don't think that's likely.
His rating away from Chelts may have been 140ish to date, but he has to have improved 15lb+ on any form to be a Gold Cup contender this season anyway. I.e. even if you're right, he'd now have to run to ~155 (imo) at tracks like Down Royal to be in position to improve enough for Chelteham to contend for the Gold cup.

TBH Stront I don't think he will win a gold cup and yes to win this race will probably take 155. I think SE on good can run to that and if it is heavy I wouldn't run him. If it's soft/heavy I might chance Joncol if I have a bet. Interesting Nicholls left in Kauto Stone! Shows what he thinks of the race IMO.

Kauto Stone was very impressive on his debut in Ireland last season to be fair, and he then finished a decent 2nd to SE in the Tingle Creek when 2m is too short for him.

Shock, I don't think he'll win a Gold Cup either - I was speaking hypotheitcally on the basis that many people do think he is a contender (imo his owners have at least 2 better GC candidates). However, how he runs could be an indication of the strength of last year's novices against their elders (he was clear 2nd in the RSA after all).

Racing fans were hoping to see Sizing Europe feature in the JNwine.com Champion Chase this weekend, although they might have to wait a little longer to see the ten-year-old in action.
The 2011 Champion Chase winner claimed a facile victory at Gowran Park in early October and is vying for favouritism ahead of Saturday’s race although trainer Henry de Bromhead insists that soft ground will see the horse withdrawn from the race.
He said: "We've said we wouldn't run him unless the ground was pretty good. I've been talking to Mike Todd, the manager there (Down Royal), and he says it's good to soft.
"Unfortunately there's rain forecast on Wednesday so he wants to wait until then before he says any more.
"You'd have to feel the ground played a part in his defeat last year. It was soft to heavy.
"I don't want him to go through something like that again - we'd love to see him over three miles on good ground.
"In November we might look at the Fortria Chase or the Clonmel Oil Chase and for his Christmas run the three options we are looking at are obviously the King George (at Kempton), the two-mile chase in Leopardstown and the Lexus there.
"We would discount anything," De Bromhead told At The Races.
Sizing Europe is bidding for his first win in this race after losing to Kauto Star in 2010 and Quito De La Roque twelve months later, with the latter race taking place on tacky ground.

Sizing Europe is among 12 horses still standing for the Down Royal feature Henry de Bromhead will keep an eye on the weather at Down Royal before committing Sizing Europe to a run in Saturday's JNwine.com Champion Chase.
The trainer's 2011 Queen Mother Champion Chase hero has finished second in the three-mile feature for the last two years.
Behind Kauto Star in 2010, his defeat by Quito De La Roque 12 months ago was put down to the testing ground.
De Bromhead is reluctant to run Sizing Europe in such conditions again.
He said: "We've said we wouldn't run him unless the ground was pretty good. I've been talking to Mike Todd, the manager there (Down Royal), and he says it's good to soft.

We are getting the tail end of Hurricane Sandy here in the north of the country worse to come this evening and tomorrow in Northern Ireland.
De Bromhead plans long trip for Europe irishindependent.ie
Although any appreciable rain in the north could rule Sizing Europe out of Saturday's JNwine.com Champion Chase at Down Royal, Henry de Bromhead appears committed to trying his exceptional two-miler over staying distances once again.
Second to Kauto Star (2010) and Quito De La Roque (2011) in the past two renewals of the three-mile Grade One, the 2011 Queen Mother Champion Chase hero got his campaign under way with a fine triumph at Gowran Park over two and a half miles.
He has never won over further and, despite looking assured in victory in the season's first Grade One at Down Royal in 2011, he laboured badly after leading at the final fence.
In soft ground, Quito De La Roque, having looked spent for much of the way, wore him down on the run to the line.
Allied to Sizing Europe's outstanding efforts during the remainder of the season, which included a stunning Tingle Creek Chase coup and saw his sole defeat come when controversially denied by Finian's Rainbow in Cheltenham's two-mile showpiece after confusion reigned as they bypassed the final fence, the suspicion was that he might now stick to that at which he excels.
However, de Bromhead always refused to rule out having another stab at the longer trip.
Possibly mindful that his stable star is rising 11 years of age and buoyed by the fact that he has only been bettered by one horse each of the past two years in the north, the Waterford handler is considering a Saturday rematch with last year's Colm Murphy-trained winner if ground conditions, currently good to soft, are suitable.
ground
"We've said we wouldn't run him unless the ground was pretty good," he said of Sizing Europe, which heads the weekend market at 5/2, half a point shorter than Quito De La Roque.
"You'd have to feel the ground played a part in his defeat last year -- it was soft to heavy. We'd love to see him over three miles on good ground."
Looking ahead, De Bromhead mapped out a diverse range of possibilities for his six-time Grade One-winner.
"In November we might look at the (two-mile) Fortria Chase or the (two-and-a-half-mile) Clonmel Oil Chase, and for his Christmas run the three options we are looking at are obviously the (three-mile) King George, the two-mile Chase at Leopardstown and the (three-mile) Lexus Chase there."
Along with Quito De La Roque, Roi Du Mee and Magnanimity, First Lieutenant is one of four Gigginstown Stud entries in Down Royal's highlight, but Mouse Morris is considering running him in the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby the same day.
"I'd say if you were to ask me now where I think he'll be running, it will be Wetherby," Morris revealed of the eight-year-old, which never posed a threat when fourth to Sizing Europe at Gowran.
"Decent ground will be a factor, although it's not bad at Down Royal. His first run will have brought him on a good deal."
In the Paddy Power Cork Grand National at Cork the following day, last year's TJ Nagle-trained winner The Bishop Looney is one of 21 potential starters, while Dessie Hughes has stated that the classy Minsk, second in graded company on its only jumps start at Fairyhouse last spring, should be ready to run over hurdles in a few weeks.
Meanwhile, Ken Whelan, one of the weigh room's most colourful characters and longest serving stalwarts at 41 years of age, has announced his retirement on medical advice, after fracturing vertebrae in his back for a third time.
Successful in the Kim Muir Chase at Cheltenham on Ferdy Murphy's Stop the Waller in 1996, Whelan finished fifth in the 1998 Aintree Grand National on Edward O'Grady's Gimme Five.
