Also working men any advice on accomodation travel lodge or reasonbly priced hotel basicaly we are looking somewhere to put our heads down for a couple of night , not sure about motor how is the public transport to course??
I looked at going to Ascot last year although I didn't go in the end. There are frequent trains from Waterloo so you would be able to stay in London no problems.
There are a few Travelodges in central London, I've stayed in most of them! They are what they are, but are good value if you book early enough.
Someone else with local knowledge will give you more help if you want to stay near the track, but I've been in London alot over the last few years and got to Sandown and Newbury easily and quickly from central London.
Even though Heathrow is closest, I'm not sure it would be that much easier or quicker from there to Ascot by public transport as it would be from another airport. From memory there is a bus to from Heathrow to Reading, then get the train from Reading to Ascot.

There is a dedicated footpath from Ascot station to the course which is a leisurely 10 minute walk, so the train is ideal - probably better than driving as it can be hard to get away after racing in the car. Ascot is on the rail line from Waterloo to Reading so you could stay in either London or Reading easily. You probably would fly to Heathrow if staying in Reading/West London, otherwise it doesn't much matter.

Fly into Heathrow and find a cheap hotel in Feltham (travelodge).
Feltham is on the direct rail line to Ascot (about 20 minutes) and a couple of stops in the other direction is Richmond, an expensive place to stay but good for a night out.

Drive there, take the wife, have a few drinks ( and then a few more more after racing to allow traffic to subside ) and suggest to wife she drives home.
Apologies to those in Feltham but wouldn't have much fancy for staying there though Richmond is a good night out. I'd take the Reading option.

He's flying into Heathrow to attend Ascot. Feltham makes perfect sense, unlike Reading.
Feltham is on Heathrow's doorstep, has good rail links with Ascot, is cheap (in an area that is otherwise ridiculously expensive) and is perfectly placed for nightlife.

Sorry to disagree about something petty but central Reading is half an hour from Heathrow on the bus and half an hour from Ascot on the train (on the same line as Feltham!).

Try some of the decent hotels in Heathrow area (aka Sheraton etc). Good prices for a weekend, sometimes not much more than a London travelodge. Hoppa bus betweeh hotel and airport. National express coach from the airport to Ascot.
