Did anyone catch what John Gosden said on Racing UK after NEWFANGLED's impressive winning debut at Newmarket.  I just caught the tail-end of the interview and missed what he said about the winner...

He has 3 by new approach and all look very promising, athletic types...He may go to ascot on the sat with her. she s only worked twice on good to firm ground so even though he likes her he was surprised by that.

Thanks TIY.  The Chesham would be a sensible target, as she took an age to pull up after the post and will relish the step up to 7f.  On breeding she should get a mile and further.  Gosden's best fillies generally improve markedly for their debut, which makes NEWFANGLED's performance all the more impressive.  She travelled like a classy filly, showed a good turn of foot and only had to be ridden out with hands and heels.  For a filly that's sure to improve over longer distances it was a remarkable debut.  One doesn't want to get too carried away by a soft-ground maiden win at this stage of the season, as one simply doesn't know the extent to which the other runners were inconvenienced by the ground, but the winner looks a smart prospect and I'll be surprised if she's not up to winning the Chesham before hopefully going on to better things.

Figgis and other time experts - the winning time was half a second slower than the first division of the fillies' handicap (2.10) won by Charlotte Rosina (carried 9st 2lbs, OR 80) but 0.27s faster than the second division of the handicap (2.45) won by Lollina Paulina (carried 8st 13lbs, OR 74).  What do you make of NEWFANGLED's performance?

It reminds me of last season when Gosdens FALLEN FOR YOU won like a classic filly to me on debut at the july course, so impressive. I got on at 33-1 for the 1000 G the same day but she never really went on to the heights i expected...once bitten, twice shy as they say.

About a year ago I posted some stats regarding John Gosden's juvenile fillies that are good enough to win first time out.  Here's an updated list of Gosden-trained juvenile fillies that won first time out, by a margin of at least two lengths, in a 'proper' maiden race (excluding auction maiden races and all-weather maidens) over 6-7f in the last few years:

2000: Crystal Music (21 July, Newmarket 7f maiden, 5/4F: started slowly, led over 2f out, ran on well, by 5 lengths, RPR 96)
2005: Nannina (19 June, Pontefract 6f maiden, 11/2: strong run to lead well inside final furlong, readily by 3 lengths, RPR 79)
2007: Sense Of Joy (4 August, Newmarket 7f maiden, 6/1: led over 1f out, ridden clear final furlong, by 5 lengths, RPR 101)
2008: Rainbow View (18 July, Newmarket 7f maiden, 11/2JF: led over 1f out, shaken up, ran on strongly, by 6 lengths, RPR 90)
2011: Questing (21 June, Newbury 7f maiden, 5/1: tracked leaders, went 2nd 4f out, pushed ahead over 1f out, soon quickened, readily came clear 1f out and in no danger final furlong, very easily, by 3½ lengths, RPR 88)
2011: Fallen For You (30 July, Newmarket 7f maiden, 5/2F: slowly into stride, held up, headway over 1f out, shaken up to lead and edged right inside final furlong, ran on, readily, by 2 lengths, RPR 82)
2011: Starscope (29 October, Newmarket 7f maiden, 20/1: dwelt, soon recovered and in touch in midfield, ran green and edged right over 2f out, shaken up to chase leaders 2f out, ridden to lead over 1f out, stayed on strongly and drew clear final furlong, ridden out, by 2½ lengths, RPR 81)

In addition, it's worth noting the following (although she only won by 1½ lengths and is therefore not listed above, she won in a significantly faster time than Starscope in the other division of the maiden):
2011: The Fugue (29 October, Newmarket 7f maiden, 14/1: dwelt, raced in centre, held up towards rear, steady progress from 4f out, chased leader 2f out, drew clear of field and challenged over 1f out, led inside final furlong, stayed on well, pushed out, by 1½ lengths, RPR 93)

That's a complete list covering the last 11 years - just seven fillies and they all turned out to be pretty smart (or potentially smart).  Crystal Music was unbeaten at two, winning the Gr.1 Fillies' Mile on her final juvenile start (RPR 111); she was sent off a 5/1 chance in the 1000 Guineas (finished 4th) and was twice Group 1-placed at three (runner-up in both the Irish Guineas and the Coronation Stakes).  Nannina progressed well as a two-year-old, winning the Gr.3 Prestige Stakes and Gr.1 Fillies' Mile (RPR 114) in her final two starts; she started at 7/1 in the 1000 Guineas (finished unplaced on soft ground), later won the Gr.1 Coronation Stakes (RPR 118) and was several times Group 1-placed (runner-up in the Falmouth, third in the Nassau, runner-up in the Sun Chariot), and at four won the Gr.2 Windsor Forest Stakes (by three lengths).  Sense Of Joy was a comfortable winner of the Gr.3 Prestige Stakes on her only subsequent two-year-old start (she met with a setback and missed her intended engagement in the Gr.1 Prix Marcel Boussac); she was a leading contender for the 1000 Guineas (as low as 8/1 in April) but sustained an injury and never raced again.  Rainbow View went through her juvenile campaign undefeated, winning the Gr.1 Fillies' Mile on her final start (RPR 117); she started odds-on favourite for the 1000 Guineas but could only finish 5th (on very fast ground) and never quite scaled the heights thereafter, though she ran creditably in Group 1 company (fourth in the Oaks, third in the Coronation Stakes, close fourth in the Falmouth, runner-up in the Nassau) before eventually winning the Gr.1 Matron Stakes (RPR 116) and moving to America.  Questing was narrowly beaten in a pair of Group 3 events (best RPR 102) before finishing well beaten in her fourth and final recorded start in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (met interference in running).  Fallen For You went on to be narrowly touched off by subsequent Fillies' Mile winner Lyric Of Light in the Gr.2 May Hill Stakes (RPR 111) before failing to give her running behind the same rival in the Fillies' Mile; she won a minor race easily on her three-year-old debut before disappointing in a Gr.3 at Lingfield (collided with rail bend, short of room 1f out, never troubled leaders).  Starscope finished well when a close fourth in the Gr.3 Nell Gwyn Stakes before filling the runner-up spot in the 1000 Guineas (RPR 97) and then disappointed when beaten favourite in the Newbury Oaks Trial.

Interestingly, five of these winning debutantes were introduced at Newmarket.  Four of the seven fillies were very smart performers at two (RPR 111+).  Four of the five fillies that raced as three-year-olds showed smart form at Group 1 level (in addition, The Fugue ran well in the Guineas and should have won the Oaks).  Not all have turned out to be top class: Questing had her limitations exposed in Group 3 company and has not raced at three; Fallen For You showed herself to be a smart filly in last year's May Hill but has yet to prove it on the track this season.  But it's fair to say that overall they've been a smart bunch of fillies.

We can now add another filly to the list:

2012: Newfangled (8 June, Newmarket 6f maiden, 10/1: chased leaders, ridden to lead over 1f out, stayed on strongly under hands and heels riding and drew clear final furlong, by 4½ lengths, RPR ??)

Whether she proves as smart as some of the other fillies on the list remains to be seen, but initial impressions have been positive.  She travelled well (without showing signs of greenness), she quickened and came away quite easily under hands and heels.  Her trainer reported afterwards: "This filly has always shown me a lot, I didn't know if she would handle the ground as all her work has been on good and she has a lovely stride on her".  Apparently she knocked a leg in the stalls, but if she recovers in time she may take her chance in the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot.  Otherwise, races like the Star Stakes, Sweet Solera Stakes, Prestige Stakes or Prix du Calvados beckon.

I see that Gosden has decided to run NEWFANGLED in the Albany Stakes on Friday (just two weeks after that impressive winning debut at Newmarket).  She has not been given an entry in the Chesham Stakes on Saturday (a race which would have suited her even better, in my opinion), as Gosden has another nice filly for that one in the shape of CHAT.  The Albany is going to have the usual competitive large field, so the draw may be a factor, but I wouldn't swap NEWFANGLED for anything else in the race.  Main danger is probably Hannon's SKY LANTERN and I'd also give a chance to RAYAHEEN and SANDREAMER.  But NEWFANGLED was so impressive first time out that I have backed her for next year's 1000 Guineas at 33/1.  She travels well, possesses a bright turn of foot, is sure to get a mile and will go on any ground (won on soft first time out but has a lovely fluent action).  The form is largely untested, but Hannon obviously thinks a fair bit of the runner-up FLEETING SMILE (another possible Albany runner).

Completely agree james, now it's about the price
Report go-all-in June 18, 2012 9:18 PM BST
James where did you get the 33/1 for next years guineas? Can't find a market on here or oddschecker. Certainly worth getting her on my side nice and early at that price.
Report jamesp June 18, 2012 9:58 PM BST
There are no formal markets for the 1000 Guineas at this stage.  I made enquiries with all three 'big' firms and they quoted me 20s, 25s and 33s respectively, Hills offering the longest price on this occasion.  I wouldn't have taken shorter than 33s.  Can't guarantee that the price is still available.
Report Ile Postino June 19, 2012 2:22 PM BST
I love the horse as well - one thing to think about though is that if she does prove herself this year, I doubt she will be trained by John Gosden for the 1,000 Guineas AND I think we all know the pitfalls of backing horses from that stable in early season classics!
Report jamesp June 19, 2012 6:24 PM BST
Well, she's bred for the job, being by New Approach out of a winning miler (the dam is by Machiavellian out of the smart mare Flagbird, who won over a mile at two and was a smart performer later on over 10f).  The fact that NEWFANGLED has shown so much speed (and is being aimed at a 6f Group race) is a huge plus, as she is sure to be better suited to 8-10f later on.  I'm not averse to backing Gosden's fillies for early season classics like the 1000 Guineas - he won the race with LAHAN a few years ago, he provided the 2nd and 4th in this year's race, his filly Maqaasid was third last year, Infallible was a good 4th in 2008 (despite not quite seeing out the mile), and he certainly knows what it takes to get one ready.  Rainbow View was a disappointment three years ago, but she didn't have the benefit of a prep race.  I don't see any reason why she wouldn't be aimed at the Guineas if she progresses as well as I hope she does.
Report roobuck June 19, 2012 6:56 PM BST
I think the point being made james, is that Godawful may get the horse and its their record that you may need to be wary of.
Report jamesp June 19, 2012 10:03 PM BST
Princess Haya of Jordan did sell Donativum and Debussy (as a five-year-old) to Godolphin, it's true, but she's just as likely to buy good horses (eg New Approach, Raven's Pass, Proclamation) as to sell them.  The possibility of a horse changing ownership is not something I factor into antepost betting on the classics, to be honest.  The current owner of NEWFANGLED certainly doesn't have any financial need to sell her best horses, that's for sure!
Report roobuck June 19, 2012 10:10 PM BST
Isn't  the owner sheik mo's wife - he bought New Approach for her
Report jamesp June 20, 2012 9:20 AM BST
Yes, that's a fair point Roobuck.  So she wouldn't be 'selling' horses to Godolphin, they would simply be transferred.  But surely the Sheikh is less likely to plunder the best horses from his wife.  It would not be conducive to marital harmony!Laugh  Donativum was not top-class and Debussy was already an older horse when he was transferred to Godolphin.  Can't think of any other examples off the top of my head.  The Sheikh demonstrates his largesse by treating his spouse to high-quality thoroughbreds.  If anything, the traffic tends to be in the opposite direction (New Approach, Raven's Pass et al).
Report Ile Postino June 20, 2012 1:12 PM BST
The fact that Godolphin might get hold of her is the only thing putting me off backing her for the Guineas.

While not a direct comparison, Questing is mentioned above and she is currently running in the US for Kiaran McLaughlin in the Darley stable colours (Sheikh Mo's old maroon and white silks) - this though maybe be because of the need of some form of medication.
Report jamesp June 20, 2012 1:36 PM BST
It's just a gut feeling, but I think it's unlikely that this filly will be transferred to Godolphin if she proves herself a top performer this season.  If she fails to reach the top grade, however, then she could well end up running in the Godolphin silks (if they decide to keep her in training).  Questing turned out to be only Group 3 class last year and she was clearly not up to Guineas standard.

Even if I thought that she might end up with Godolphin, this wouldn't be a huge negative for me, provided she went to Mahmood Al Zarooni and not to Saeed Bin Suroor.  He won the race last season with Blue Bunting and it was unfortunate that Discourse fractured her pelvis in this year's race.  (Her stablemate Lyric Of Light was never travelling and seemed to hate the sticky ground.)  I'm prepared to keep faith with Mahmood Al Zarooni as far as the Guineas races are concerned.
Report jamesp June 20, 2012 1:48 PM BST
The defection of SKY LANTERN from the Albany Stakes should make things a bit easier for NEWFANGLED, who looks very likely to start favourite for Friday's race.  The highly regarded TASSEL is much better than she showed last time at Salisbury (finished lame) and could pose problems.  AGENT ALLISON was impressive at Pontefract and could be anything, but it was only a maiden auction race and the form probably doesn't amount to much.  SANDREAMER is very well regarded and likely to improve considerably from her debut win, the form of which has worked out quite well.  There are several other promising types, but NEWFANGLED has a favourite's chance.  Let's hope she passes the test.
Report roobuck June 20, 2012 11:24 PM BST
On balance I agree that Newfangled unlikely to be transferred to Godolphin and think he shows a greater loyalty to Gosden than any other non Dubai trainer.

However lets be honest that they are all Sheik Mo's horses and Godolphin is his baby and for that reason it is still possible. I agree about Zooni but don't think either trainer has a good record taking over horses as 3yos that have been trained elsewhere as juveniles. The horses you mention james he had as 2yos.

Looking like she won't be a betting proposition on Friday.

Must admit, at first glance, I'd draw similar conclusions to james when reading her pedigree....but I suppose it's too early to call New Approach and he does seem to be transmitting plenty of speed atm.  Plenty of toe on the dam's side too but still a little surprised the jock thinks she doesn't want 7f and they're sticking to 6.
Report sintonian June 22, 2012 3:23 PM BST
Dawn Approach will improve for an extra furlong at least. He is positively gagging for 7f. He was briefly outpaced at Ascot. The same at Naas.

This filly however looks all speed so far. Very impressive. Well done James.
Report jamesp June 22, 2012 4:12 PM BST
Very pleased with that performanceHappy.  It certainly wasn't the plan to make all the running on soft ground into a strong headwind on a stiff track, but she was just in a different class.  That was quite a stamina test, so I've no doubts at all about her getting 7f, even if they decide to keep her to 6f this season.  She settles well at home, so a mile next year should be within her compass.  The pedigree suggests a mile should be no problem: she's by a Derby winner out of a winning miler (the dam herself being by Machiavellian out of a top-class 8-10f performer).  I think she'll be even better on faster ground.  She's certainly the best around at the moment and a worthy favourite for the Guineas.

Took the 16's after the race today which imo far too big. I'm not concerned at all about her staying a mile next year on pedigree she looks like she should improve on it. Gosden will need to get her to settle now and she looks a cracking prospect.
Report jamesp June 22, 2012 9:47 PM BST
She settles well at home, and she settled well in her first race.  I think she just got a bit 'geed up' by all the razzamatazz today and the problems down at the starting stalls.  I'd like to see her get a lead next time (in the Lowther), but it's good for her prospects that she can make her own running if necessary.  John Gosden said after the race: "Today you´d say she isn´t a miler, but at home you´d say she could do any trip. It´s my job to settle her down."

Richard Hannon made the right decision not to run Sky Lantern and Rayaheen.  We'll doubtless see one of them in the Cherry Hinton next month.

Report jamesp June 23, 2012 10:40 AM BST
I tend to agree with you that it wasn't the greatest of races.  It was the manner of victory that was so impressive.  But the form probably isn't too bad: the runner-up had won her only previous race impressively and is well regarded; the third was a last-time-out Ascot maiden winner who had shown promise on debut in a hot Newbury maiden (finishing a couple of heads behind Cay Verde); the fourth had won her only previous race, where she beat a couple of previous winners; the fifth had shown considerable promise in her only previous race behind Mister Marc (subsequently runner-up to Dawn Approach); the sixth had been slowly away in her only previous race and was entitled to improve a fair bit; the seventh admittedly hadn't shown much in two previous races; the eighth and ninth were last-time-out maiden winners.  Not a great race, but a reasonably competitive one.
