Here we go again then. It's the start of the flat season and there's always lots to look forward to. As you all are aware by now the sprints give me the most pleasure but this day at Doncaster always has me hooked too and The Lincoln and it's consolation could be classed as honorary sprints in my eyes.

Spring Mile

There is only 6lbs separating the top and bottom in the handicap this year and it's hard to pick out anything with confidence. It is looking more and more like a none betting race for me but if I fancy a cheeky interest then I might play small stakes each way on Redvers. His last two run of the previous season is where my interest is sparked in him having looked to be staying on when upped to the 7f trip for both of those starts. He's a half brother to some decent sorts and I have no doubt that the step up again to the mile will be more of a help than a hindrance. Having switched both owner and stable (and potentially having been gelded; although there is no way of knowing exactly when this took place rather annoyingly) over the Winter he could improve for his new surroundings and being only a 4yo also helps matters on that score. It doesn't look like a betting event this year as I say, but the 20/1 about him is a fair each way price for some interest on the first flat turf race of the season.

The Lincoln

This won't be very useful at all I'm afraid as I'm already on Fury (12/1) and Cocozza (14/1) ante post. I always like a lightly raced 4yo for this and these two fit the bill nicely. I've been encouraged by the news recently about Fury's gelding operation and the twisted testicle they found, which offers an excuse to the poor runs he put in last term. He has a talented claimer on board and his mark could look low here come later in the season. While Cocozza's form in Ireland is decent and Botti seems pleased with his new recruit. I'm happy to be on at the prices I am. In the last few weeks the one that scared me against my two was Eton Forever. He has obviously run well at Doncaster in the past and while his mark now is high he kept leaving a nagging doubt that he'd improve again on the day. So much so that I felt I had to throw a cover bet on him. I missed the boat somewhat but caved in when he was 8/1. If one of my main two win then it'll be a cracking start to the new campaign. If not, there's always the sprint on the Sunday to save the weekend.

Nothing is floating my boat in the Lincoln but for some strange reason I've backed a couple in the Spring Mile. I've put all my eggs in the high draw basket and backed Reve De Nuit and Shamdarley at 16-1 EW.

Reve De Nuit's trainer Mccabe is in cracking form at the moment and RDN's all weather rating is a fair bit higher than his turf so he could have a few pounds in hand. Also the booking of Smullen to ride looks good!

Shamdarley has run well at Donny before and also ran a blinder last year at Newmarket in the Silver Cambridgeshire when he was drawn the wrong side. He gained compensation at York with tidy win and could be an improver for a yard which has had a few winners recently.

There seems to be a few front runners high so Reve De Nuit and Shamdarley who both like to come off the pace could have the race run to suit. That's what I'm hoping for anyway and I know what will happen, all the action will be on the far side! Laugh

Hi VK,

According to Flat Stats Redvers has always been a Gelding.

I've posted my selections on the Lincoln Ante Post thread, at the moment I'm with Shamdarley and Start Right - uncanny that the above two posters bestmate and MrDinos have gone for one of those each, too.

Good luck with your selections. Looking forward to hearing your opinions on those sprints this season.

Have spent the last hour going Lincoln in detail
Start Right was my prelimany selection. Now I think this is a stonking bet. If drawn on the right side it will go very close
