I was quite impressed by this horse last season and wondered what peoples thoughts were around its breeding? Im not really a follwer of the breeding side, im familiar with Dubawi's who seem to improve at 3 and I think are fairly versatile in terms of ground and trip up to 12f. Can anyone shed any light on the dam side and thoughts in general on this horse?
Not as obviously eyecatching as the likes of Camelot but I think it showed decent ability in its three starts and was unlucky not to win on its last outing when slow pace/heavy ground probably didnt help.

a big player who should stay well.

I have him down as a 12 furlong horse but aside from being by Dubawi out of a mare by Tiger Hill (definite influence for stamina) I seem to be unable to find much about the dam's side.

He maybe will not be seen at his very best until he gets at least 10 furlongs, and probably good going or faster - he soimply hated the bog he had in his last race.

I have backed him for the Derby. However I like another dark horse from the same stable - Takar. He looks a very interesting middle distance prospect indeed. In fact Oxx looks to have at least 3 decent classic hopefuls.

cheers cryoftruth.

Not familiar with Takar, I will check this one out.

I agree about 12f for Akeed, difficult to get an idea of what the big stables are thinking when they have 2/3 options. Tempted to have a bit on for the Derby but have Irish Derby instead in the back of my mind.

Thanks Bazaar

The dam by Tiger hill was out of a Saddler's Well mare.

Looking at the pedigree there is tons of stamina - he is definitely bred to be best suited to middle distances.
Report Ile Postino • January 31, 2012 10:29 AM GMT
His first dam, Wonder Why (Tiger Hill) was unraced and he is her first runner.
His second dam, Wells Whisper (Sadler's Wells) has produced 3 stakes performers in Germany, all over middle-distances, and also includes several jumps winners.
His third dam, Whakilyric, was a top-class juvenile in France but is probably best known for producing the French Derby winner Hernando.

Looks a family with stamina throughout, and 12-furlongs should be well-within his capabilities.

thanks for the info.

where did you get all the excellent info regards offspring of second dams etc?

I had a look at an Equineline pedigree. I think he could be good this year and interested for the future.

i am a big fan of this huy for Epsom. i belive he was undone by the very heavy ground i the G2 beresford on only his 3rd run, David Livingston had much more racetrack exp and (opinion) given a tactily better ride (from the front always prominat on dead ground elimates a good turn of foot charge in the last furlong).
He did quicken nicely in his leop maiden on decent ground and quicken nicely on the dead ground in the G2, Oxx is very soft on his 2yr olds so was never going to go to england for the RP or france for the Grand Critioum, i can only see Oxx taking his tried and trusted derby route of the derryinston trial and Oxx is a great man at peaking his horses for the day, he will not be double handed as Born To Sea will be a miler at most(fingers crossed for newmarket).
A very mild Irish winter means Oxxs stable will be going for the start and Akeed Mofeed is a real horse to take on Camelot, who might be ruined by Epsom by taking in the Guineas!

I agree with all that except the last bit DMCK. The 2000 Guineas is an excellent Derby trial, in fact the best trial. Camelot would go there if he was mine and end up trying for the triple crown!
Report DMCK • January 31, 2012 7:15 PM GMT
ah the elusive triple crown, i would love to see a horse in my lifetime do it but i dont think Montjeu will sire one, Galileo has to be the fav but an american horse like smart strike could do it either. I personally dont like the Guineas as a derby trial, in my humble opinion a horse that gets a mile as a 2year old shouldnt take a mile as a 3yr, (i was completly wrong about frankel and i had my main STS bet for the derby).
I am not rubbishing the Guineas a a stepping stone to Epsom but ni do feel the step up of 8f to 12f isa lot of strenious training for a young horse, i mean if he is naturally fast you do fast work etc but then straight away you need to build stamina in such a short time its dangerous.
To just take the guineas as a starting point with out really thinkiong of winning is silly as there is many good 9/10/11furlong trials in eire and england(plus france)

just to give example cause im rambling as usual Happy Parish Hall, won the dewhurt over 7f on good ground, JSB says he is a derby horse but will most likey tackle the Guineas and for a horse like him i think its the only move, the horse trives on racing, (raced 5 times starting april), the quick mile suits on pedgree and win or lose he has the scope to contest a trial at 10f before the derby.

Camelot, brilliant G1 winner on second start, by monjue is true to stay the trip, showed a lovely turn of foot at donny in the RP. both starts we over a mile maiden in mid july missed the G2 beresford with training set back. so by taking in the guineas a horse who won over a miler at 2 and is now a bigger horse is asked to win over a mile and his stamina laiden pedgree doesnt scream miler (Montjeu has never sired a G1 mile for 3year olds plus the dam sire kingmambo swings both ways but on this occasion 10f seems fair on the dam side), so to get him ready for newm, arket he will have to take in  alot of speed work and thats no guarentee then he'll have to go baaack stamina (should be easy for him) trainign for derby butthis is a horse won al;ready has had trainign set back and missed engagment and with st nicholas abbey fresh in mind i would be avoiding the guineas is Camelot ws mine

On Derby hope Akeed Mofeed, Oxx added: "His target is the Derrinstown, if we can get him there in time. He's missed a bit of work but hopefully we can get him fit enough to get him there.

"It's the Derby trial in Ireland and there isn't much else for him, so it's that or nothing. He almost has to run at Leopardstown if we are going to get him to the Derby, so that's the aim."

John Oxx warns Akeed Mofeed won't be at peak fitness for his seasonal reappearance in the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial at Leopardstown on Sunday week.

The three-year-old is second-favourite behind Camelot in the betting for the Investec Derby at Epsom in June, but missed his intended comeback target at Leopardstown last month after suffering a setback.

He now faces a race against time to be fit enough for his next target and Oxx conceded if he does not make Leopardstown, his Epsom participation would also be in serious doubt.

"He walked for 10 days and walked and trotted for seven, but he was 17 days without a canter," Oxx told At The Races.

"He cantered last Monday week and then did some fast work this week. We hope to run him in the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial on Sunday week at Leopardstown, but it is coming up too soon.

"He would certainly want another week, but if we can get him there fit enough to run a good race we'd be hoping to run.

"That is the Derby trial in Ireland and there isn't a lot else for him, so we wouldn't have a back-up as an Epsom Derby trial. It's that or nothing.

"I think he has to run at Leopardstown if he's going to run in the Derby, so we'll see how the next week or 10 days go.

"He didn't have a big problem, he just needed some rest and he seems to have made a good recovery. If he stands up to the work without having a recurrence I'd be pretty hopeful we'll get him to Leopardstown, although he will not be as fit as I'd have liked."

Akeed Mofeed is not a certain runner in the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial Stakes at Leopardstown on Sunday.

The John Oxx-trained colt is prominent in the betting for the Investec Derby but his participation for the Classic trial is in some doubt.

Akeed Mofeed missed the 2000 Guineas after suffering a setback and Oxx is still not convinced he is back to his best.

"We've no definite decision yet. We just have to do a little more work and make up our minds," said Oxx.

"It may come too soon. I'd say he's not a certain runner, we'll see on Friday morning."

If Oxx is to be believed, if he doesn't make the weekend, then won't go to Epsom - compresses the Derby market even more.

£100 avail to back at 6 for place, and over £ 120 at 27, says it all
