I am not the biggest fan of the Jockey but Joncol does not have the speed to beat Rubi Light. One horse is 6yo, the other is 9.

What is the relevance of the difference in age regarding speed ?

Linford Christie was in his mid thirties when he won the Olympic 100m.

Sea Pigeon was winning Ch Hdls @ 10 & 11yrs.

Miles on the clock is the relevance, Flyingbolt.

And remember, Joncol won todays race himself when he was ... 7.

The age thing is not a generalisation, btw. It's just Joncol has never show much speed. He is a big lump of a horse and won his prep over 22f last time out.

Back to my favourite gripe, how can it be easier to win a race by conserving energy whilst many lengths off the lead, if you are twelve lengths down, (which is not an exaggeration these days)but the distance never gets extended, then you are travelling at the same pace as the leader, but you have forfeited that distance by being lack a daisical at the jump off, hence an over exaggeration of distance behind.
The Japanese jockey in the sprint jumped off and eliminated his bad draw in the first furlong, but then reined the horse in and dropped back to 4th she was never in a challenging position after, yet had beaten many of these in Japan and in a 2 second faster time.

An argument could be made that as a horse gets older he loses some speed, but in Joncol's case I think he has always been a stayer, winning a P2P early days and his finest hour being the Hennessy & his main goal being the Lexus. Carberry was always going to struggle to stay with RL when he went to win his race 3f out. I'd still think Joncol will be there or thereabouts in the Lexus

Joncol was staying on at the finish and one or two firs cut his price from 6/1 to 7/2!!

I backed him on Muirhead when he won last time, but he over does the hold up race and loses some races because he has that only way of riding, wonderful when you have a brilliant horse carrying you but it does not help if horses roll into you or falls in front of you and causes interference, lying closer may eliminate most of the imponderables, it is a malaise which is gathering momentum amongst Irish and British jockeys of BOTH codes.
Remember when Martin Pipe revolutionised the training game and his jockeys went out to lead most, if not all of the running.
