Rather impressive maiden winner at Newbury today.  Here is what the trainer had to say ...

Roger Charlton's Top Offer justified his tall home reputation by winning division two of the juvenile maiden at Newbury.

Steve Drowne had his mount positioned over on the far side of the track and once he popped the question, the Dansili colt quickened up smartly.

Fellow newcomer Pulverize tried his best to keep tabs on Top Offer heading inside the final furlong, but the latter was much too strong, passing the post with three and a half lengths in hand.

Charlton said: "You don't often see it in two-year-olds. He's always been so straightforward and he's a wonderful mover.

"We're always looking for nice horses and you have to keep pinching yourself now and again.

"We upped his work and he's been working with older horses. He's always done it nicely.

"Then you get apprehensive because I said to someone this morning I'd be disappointed if he didn't win by three lengths!

"I've always liked him and he's got a great future.

"Horses need to be allowed to progress. I'm not one for jumping from a maiden to a Group One, but should he progress, the obvious Group One races are the Dewhurst and the Racing Post Trophy.

"We'll have to see what we run him in next but he's a nice horse and if he takes this race all right we've got to crack on and let him prove himself.

"Cityscape won his novice race last year by nine lengths and I always thought this was potentially a better horse than Cityscape. He runs in a Group One on Monday."

Yes, a really nice performance today. A Guineas rather than Derby prospect, I'd say.

by a miler out of a mare who was by Zafonic, the mare stayed 10 furlongs and I would agree with Augustine that the guineas looks more likely than the Derby at this stage, at least on breeding. however he appeared to stay on very well so he could outstay his pedigree.

despite his being "straightforward" i thought he took just a while to really get the hang of things and looked pretty good at the end.

25/1 for a maiden winner is not great value though.

Looking at Derby entries last week and Top Offer for the 2,000 caught my eye. Was impressive at Newbury, rich owner, and trainer comments a plus. Took the 20's, don't know if it's value but if he wins won't be that price, obviously.
