AEGEAN DAWN, yet to be beaten in four career starts, has been installed as the 5-1 favourite by the sponsors for Saturday's Paddy Power Imperial Cup.

The Nicky Henderson-trained six-year-old holds engagements in both the Coral Cup and County Hurdle at next week's Cheltenham Festival and would be eligible for a £75,000 bonus should he win at Cheltenham following success in Saturday's Listed handicap hurdle.

Henderson, successful in the race in 2009 with Dave's Dream, holds an incredibly strong hand in the 2m½f contest, being responsible for the first fourin the market.

Giorgio Quercus, who is seeking a hat-trick of victories, is the sponsors' second-favourite at 8-1, with stablemates Eradicate and Owen Glendower next best at 10-1.

Philip Hobbs could run Qaspal, who has not run since winning the race last year, and recent Newbury runner-up Pateese.

Fiulin hasn't won over hurdles since being purchased for £280,000 out of Marco Botti's yard, but trainer Evan Williams is looking for a big run from the six-year-old, who is a 20-1 chance.

He said: "The Imperial Cup is the target and he's entered in everything at Cheltenham, providing he goes well. This is an opportunity to see how is."

Recent Kempton novice winner Sire De Grugy could represent Gary Moore, who has also entered Saturday's Newbury winner Via Galilei.

Ronaldo Des Mottes, recent Bangor winner Numide and the Emma Lavelle-trained Kangaroo Court also feature among the 40 entries.

I've bolded up the part for Dudie, who clearly believes anything he's told, it's why he fell for the bending over in the shower routine at the Blue Oyster Club, his regular haunt.

Would have to wait and see what his new mark is Duffy surely. 20/1 might be bad value if he's on a high mark now.
Report duffy March 7, 2011 9:36 PM GMT
he's on 121 but i'd be happy to back him if he went up 10 or so.....the 121 is low in comparison to his true ability that we have been hearing about all winter and that we saw a bit of on saturday......if he would have been able to do it on bad ground through the winter ....he would now be at the higher end of some markets for the festival, rather than struggling to get in the county off 121.

AD is more of a trust the gut thing, which I am going to listen to a bit more. Hiked up from 119 to 145 after beating Mille Chief (did he have a penalty from previous race cannot remember) and hasn't run since

Would appear to me he has been absolutely laid out for the Imperial Cup/Cheltenham festival race bonus. If he hadn't, why has he not run since? Probably (imv) that they don't want to be pitching him up against the best graded horses as such a relatively early stage of his career (only 4 previous starts and novice tag went in '09)

I reckon Henderson and co know they have a very, very well handicapped brute on their hands despite the mark of 145 and think even by winning the Imperial Cup and the penalty he'll get at Cheltenham he'll have enough in the tank to win again at the festival.

He won his two races earlier in the season in 7 days, and he brushed aside Mille Chief who is clearly very useful (yes I know he was receiving a lot of weight)

All aboard, imv

fft agree, thinking of backing him to win saturday and any race at cheltenham 18/1.
Report paulo47 March 8, 2011 10:30 AM GMT
Re VG are we in double penalty country now ? He is 126 with his 5 lb for Sats win which wouldnt get him in to the CH , so does a win in the IC give him another 5 lb which would get him in ?
Report duffy March 8, 2011 1:04 PM GMT

i think so....with 131...he'd need about 20 to come out which i think will give him a sporting chance of getting in with......needs to win on saturday first mind you.....i took 95's on here going over the last on saturday.....just in case it all worked out and he got in.

Henderson told racingpost.com on Wednesday night that Aegean Dawn had disappointed in a schooling session earlier in the day.

"I'd been very happy with his work and he is sound but he didn't school well and something is obviously troubling him.

Was being laid well before today.  Very strange.

Report booster March 10, 2011 5:48 PM GMT
Via Galilei does look thrown in compared to his flat form. I think he may prefer a flat left hand track but he's so well in he could win anyway as you can normally add 45-50 to their flat mark once they take to hurdling. Australia Day a good recent example. I also think Ronaldo Des Mottes has some mileage in him off 149 as they sent him to Punchestown for last year's Irish Champion Hurdle and he was conceding 7lbs to Get Me Out Of Here in the Tote Gold Trophy. It goes against the grain to back a top weight in this race but this is the worst race he's run in for a while.
Report paulo47 March 10, 2011 7:17 PM GMT
Agreed , he jumps pretty straight though and did win at the Curragh on the flat , thing I like is how well he traveled on Sat and how clever avoiding the faller , thing I dont like is his head carriage especially if it came to a battle , think he will be produced very late .
