I believe this horse is a classic plot for the Grand National.

C F Swan had trained OCC for the Grand National last season, but removed him after being given a ridiculous Grand National handicap mark of 161.

This year he's been alloted a mark of 139. A swing of 1 stone 8 pounds.

For the statisticians, he ticks all the boxes that are required for a Grand National winner:

[x] 10 years old
[x] sired by Old Vic who produced Grand National winners in Don't Push It and Comply or Die
[x] has won beyond 3 miles over fences
[x] his current mark would mean he'd run carrying 10-3
[x] has won £156,889 from chase victories including the Powers Gold Cup at Fairyhouse in 2007, he's also ran into valuable places including back in November's Becher's Handicap Chase where he ran on into 3rd when giving Hello Bud weight (and most of all looking after his handicap mark) proving his liking for the big obstacles.
[x] his only jumping blot came last time out when unseating A P Heskin. I can forgive that [;)]

The only concern is being at number 65. Will he get in at the bottom? Here's to hoping he does!

I'm on him, confident he'll get in.
Report Cheltenham_Enthusiast... March 1, 2011 12:04 AM GMT
He can be backed at 40/1 generally available and 64/1 on here.

Seems a long time since I won a few quid off him at Fairyhouse, been costly to follow since, but I think he's got a fair chance if he gets in.
Report Cheltenham_Enthusiast... March 1, 2011 12:15 AM GMT
I'm no expert so correct me if i'm wrong, but Swan messes about with his horses more than the average trainer. Very hard to guess when he's going to let his horse give it's true running. One Cool Cookie is a point in case where his OR is currently 135, but we all know he's a genuine 150+ chaser.

Given the Grand National is what this has all been leading to I see no reason why he shouldn't go close to winning the Cross Country at Cheltenham either at 14/1.

do they go clockwise round aintree these days?

Any thoughts from the more established judges on here?
Report bazzar March 2, 2011 9:49 PM GMT
There were 3 joint top weights last year, Alberta's run, Madison du Berlais and Notre Pere each rated at 158 with a weight of 11st 10lbs, One Cool Cookie was
set to receive 9 lbs on 11st 1, so could not have been rated at 161, but he has dropped in the handicap from last year but only by 10 Lbs, I thought that War Of Attrition was as anear to a good thing as anyone could get in a Grand National, however I forgot how highly he was esteemed by his connections, can't complain as he won the Gold Cup for me when most on here believed that he would go for the RYANAIR sponsored by his owner.
He had beaten the previous Gold Cup winner but most thought that he had gone off badly , so the form wasn't good.
Report Cheltenham_Enthusiast.... March 2, 2011 10:16 PM GMT
Apologies. I meant for the 2009 Grand National. Exotic Dancer was rated 174 and One Cool Cookie was due to run off of 10st 11lb.

Chelts, one poster brings up the fact that he has only won on right handed tracks, but he has tried Aintree and I remember I backed him to get a place,
young Heskin rode and at one stage I thought my money was done, when he appeared to drop back for no apparent reason (apprentice not strong enough?), but then he began slowly to run on again and if memory serves he passed5 tried and tested stayers to take third well before the elbow after landing 5th at the last, it could be that you are right.
Report Cheltenham_Enthusiast....... March 3, 2011 10:48 AM GMT
Yeah he was practically schooled at Aintree that day. It's all about getting him in on a soft mark and I believe he will just creep in to run off of a weight that's easily a stone in hand. The only question mark for me before the Aintree run is whether he'd take to the big obstacles, but he jumped them well.

I'm more than satisfied with my 40/1 ticket.

Is there a site that the race can be re-viewed, if memory serves Hello Bud made all or nearly all, that day and ONE passed at least 5 seasoned 'chasers to take 3rd.
Report Cheltenham_Enthusiast......... March 3, 2011 11:55 AM GMT
Yeah Hello Bud won almost (was headed momentarily) pillar to post. Hello Bud was hard pushed to win. One Cool Cookie stayed on as you say running past 5 seasoned chasers to land 3rd. Swan would never have wanted to grab the handicapper's attention by winning this, but you could see it was easily with in One Cool Cookie's compass.

Cheltenham Enthusiast. I backed One Cool Cookie on the morning of the Becher, and have been doing so since. As u say, was practically schooled round out of harms way, and finished very strongly. Has proven can get round over the fences, fits most stats, top GN sire, if (and that's my only worry) he gets in, i think he has a cracking chance!
Report Cheltenham_Enthusiast............. March 5, 2011 12:31 AM GMT
Good to hear i'm not the only one that's seen it! Let's hope he gets in and gives his running!

I remember McCririck giving his opinion about a horse and it being a "plot" the value of the race to the winner about £2,000.
Can anybody believe that?
Report sintonian March 11, 2011 10:16 AM GMT
He'll need to make the top 4 or 5 next week at Cheltenham if his to go to Aintree. The race in which he ran in last time out where he US at the 4th produced the winner of the Leinester National last weekend, Benefit Night, but we have no idea how close he would have finished in relation.

I have my eye on this horse but only for Cheltenham next week.

Offshore Account placed in the Willy Trophy last year for Charlie Swann at 33/1,and he usually has one or two that outrun their prices at the Festival.
Report Cheltenham_Enthusiast....................... March 11, 2011 11:10 AM GMT
Do you think enough horses will pull out for him to get a run Sint?
Report sintonian March 11, 2011 11:24 AM GMT
I really dont know. I liked another one on the same rating I think, skippers Brig, but have not backed him on account of maybe not getting a run
Report Cheltenham_Enthusiast....................... March 11, 2011 11:39 AM GMT
Sad
Report bazzar March 11, 2011 1:52 PM GMT
I think that OCC will get in and Skip Brig is only 1lb lower in weights but because of his recent form Mr Smith will move him to the top of the 10st 2 ers and if the connections of skip leave him in and he is balotted out then you get your money back, as regards OCC winning at Chelts the object is obviously the £500,000 prize at Aintree.
Report north_end March 15, 2011 10:15 PM GMT
cheltenham enthusiast, what did you make of his run today?
He was going well enough and jumping big without losing ground which reinforces my view that he will go well at Aintree, but it's hard to say as far as todays contest went only seeing him compete for half the race.

One thing I noticed when he ran at Aintree in the Becher H'cap Chase was not only that he was kept towards the rear, but also he was kept deliberately wide (out of harms way) and Russell seemed to try that today. If you re watch the race you see him jump the 3rd much wider out. At the point where he ran out at the Cheese wedges he was quite short of room and perhaps it spooked the horse. I'm only guessing of course.

On the whole though if he lines up for the Grand National i'd still be happy to be a backer.

What was your opinion?
Report sintonian March 15, 2011 11:32 PM GMT
tbh, I was going to keep quite, so to snaffle the bigger prices ... it was still early in the race and the horse was travelling nicely, imo, and looked like he was going to go close, but I thought the Jockey made an absolute Horlicks of it. I'd blame him not the horse.
Report Fabulous March 15, 2011 11:44 PM GMT
Hasn't put me off, still think he'll go close.
We'll just let this thread fall of the page then sint [;)]
The main thing with what happened today was that the horse pulled up safe. Seen many run out and demolish the railings injuring themselves in the process.

Just have a look at what DON'T PUSH IT did at
Cheltenham, before winning the NATIONAL.
