Does anyone know anything about the trainer Ed Walker?
Report Stow_judge February 10, 2011 12:38 AM GMT
I have found the info. Walker, who was assistant to Luca Cumani for four seasons, moved into the historic St Gatien Stables in Newmarket last month, taking over 24 boxes.

Before coming to Newmarket, Walker had a two-year spell with Roger Charlton and also worked with Richard Gibson in France after finishing his course at the Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester.  Walker also worked for a short time with Ian Balding.

At this very early stage I like the look of Taqleed. He seems to be the stand out horse from the "lightly raced 4 year old" category that has proven profitable to follow in recent times. Infact the last six winners of the race when it's been run at Doncaster have been 4 year olds. Taqleed is trained by John Gosden who sent Expresso Star to victory in this two years ago, so he knows how to ready one. He was impressive on his first two starts last term and then finished a very creditable sixth in the Cambridgeshire on only his fourth racecourse appearance. He is beautifully bred and it looks to me like there is even more to come from him now he is maturing with age. He is sitting on a handy mark of 95 for this and could easily prove to be much better than that mark in time. So with age, improvement and talent on his side I'd be plumping for him at present at around the 16/1 mark.

I started a thread for the Lincoln earlierMischief

Had a very quick look through the entries and the two I like, though no idea if they are intended runners are:

Call To Reason - J.Noseda @ 16/1

Taqleed - J.Gosden @ 14/1

Both lightly raced improving sorts from top yards who have decent records in the heritage handicaps. Both horses were impressive winners on their seasonal bows last year (admittedly only in maidens) so first time out could be the best time to catch them.
Report johnnyrant February 10, 2011 12:22 PM GMT
I always like Gosden and Barry Hills runners in this as they have a history of 'readying one' for the Lincoln. So Taqleed, Nationalism and Gunner Lindley are my initial 3 picks e/w.

don't understand that logic. he's higher than when he was beaten in the race last year, so realistically a place is the best you can hope for.
Report chosenway February 14, 2011 10:36 PM GMT
Yes Darren, Prime Exhibit is running of a higher rating (4lb) you might be right about a place finish. Horses can improve with age and i can see Prime Exhibit being one. So at this early stage I am sticking with Prime Exhibit. Hopefully he will have a nice pipe opener on the a-w like he did last season which will put him spot on for this years race.

I agree that the Gosden entries are as good a place to start as any.

Taqleed struck me as being more of a 10f+ performer in the making - against that many better judges thought otherwise last autumn. However I have bigger concerns about Nationalism (last run) and Doctor Crane (owned by Mrs G, quite well backed for last year's renewal but hasnt run for almost 2 years now). 16/1 e/w Taqleed will do for now pending more info on running plans.

Taqleed for me too. Progressive whilst the form is very solid.Backed him in the Cambridgeshire and he ran really well and I maybe being a bit critical but I thought he was ridden too close to strong pace that day.

Nationalism looked very classy at Goodwood and I think the mark is decent.Im happy to ignore his two final runs when poorly drawn in Cambridgeshire and his final race was a weird end of season race where you had to sit prominent.

I also like Our Joe Mac whose best form has come on soft ground and in bigger fields with stronger pace.

Will need soft ground for all three to probably best at their best.

Report BJG February 24, 2011 12:19 PM GMT
JOHN GOSDEN has warned punters that his William Hill Lincoln joint-favourite Taqleed is not certain to make it into the final line-up for the April 2 handicap at Doncaster.

Six of the front eight in the betting need others to come out if he is to make the final line-up with the Gosden-trained pair Nationalism and Doctor Crane the only two at the head of the betting guaranteed to make the final field of 22.

Gosden, who won the race in 2009 with Expresso Star said: "I see Taqleed is quite well fancied but he is not sure to get in. With these big, valuable handicaps you need to be rated 95 to get in

"Doctor Crane is in good form and I am pleased with him. Nationalism is doing fine and there is no reason why he won'trun."

Gosden, who also has the 87-rated Dhaamer entered, ruled out the possibility of going for the Lincoln Trial at Wolverhampton on March 19 with either Taqleed or Dhaamer. "They will go straight there or not at all," he added. "If they miss out on the Lincoln we could go for the consolation race."

I'll still be a little surprised if he dosen't get in, especially if they really fancy him - Gosden could withdraw his other runners, and Maktoum has Fareer who he could pull out.

Tartan Gigha looks like a good EW bet to me having looked at the race card this morning! He has run two good races already this season on the all weather at Deauville and Wolverhampton and he's dropped to a rating of 96. If the weather stays dry I think this horse will love the faster going being by Green Desert! Mark Johnston seems to be in decent form as well at the moment and with Tartan Gigha fitting most of the trends the 33-1 at **** looks tempting!!!

Does anybody know if Mark Johnston has said whether he is a likely runner or not?
Report Howellsy March 27, 2011 1:47 PM BST
Tartan Gigha is a good horse and probably handicapped to win a race lacking progressive rivals, but he is a 9f horse, or extended 8. His chance will come at Newmarket or Epsom again, presuming he doesn't go up the ratings kin the mean time.
Report MrDinos March 27, 2011 2:07 PM BST
Yes your probably right Howellsy, all his better runs have been over 9f and Donny isn't one of the stiffest tracks!!! There have been some horses who have dropped back in trip to win the Lincoln in recent years, Expresso Star won a couple of 10f races and Blythe Knight was another that springs to mind!!!

The draw is another big concern as well!!!
Report MrDinos March 28, 2011 7:09 AM BST

The ground is pretty quick at the moment but obviously with rain around who knows what it'll be like come saturday- I'll have a jog around the course a couple of times over the next few days and feedback. The turf is very bare at the moment with (I think) far less grass cover than Lincoln day last year- which wasn't great. When I was last on the track on friday I had the feeling that there was slightly more grass on the stands side, but in truth it was almost uniformly poor.

Downy/Sint, I'm not sure there is enough evidence yet on the draw since the track was relayed. I can see the stats re 6 of last 9 drawn low, but that isn't much of a sample, and consolation race run on same day often seems to throw a different result.
Liberator, I think the turf is the worst I've ever seen it. I was amazed that somebody was stupid enough to burn the fence, the racecourse is one of the few reasons anyone from outside would visit donny, and people try to damage it!

The dark horse Fremont has the right profile for me - 12/1 not as good as 33/1 but will do for me, especially if Tom Segal picks one from each side 'cos Frement could well then be in the firing line.

what's peoples opinions of the draw ? fav drawn middle for diddle, ( 11 of 22 ). or do we wait till spring cup run ?
Report wondersobright March 31, 2011 9:40 PM BST
Spring Mile (know what you meant).

Can't say I like Taqleed's draw all that much. Should go low though, and I'd say that was the place to be.

Prime Exhibit 3 pts
Prince Of Dance 1 pt
Castles In The Air 1 pt

Like the look of the low drawn horses, unless something weird happens in the opener I'd expect one of the low drawn horses to be winning this.

Out of those drawn 1-5 I cant have Tartan Gigha who wouldn't have beaten Prime Exhibit last time out without help in running and is now 4lbs worse off with the weight allowance for Prime's apprentice jockey who has won on the horse before. Also can't have the top weight.

What a terrible decision to pull Taqleed out of the race at the last minute. Sweet Lightning shouldn't be winning a Lincoln. Taqleed would have won in my opinion if they had let it take it's chance a la Expresso Star under the same circumstances. Such a shame.

agreed VK

poor excuse imo pulling horses out on good ground
Report sintonian April 2, 2011 7:06 PM BST
it was to do with the grass cover not firmness imo. they felt the ground was false.

obviously they think a lot of Raqleed and dont want him injured.
Report Value King April 2, 2011 7:55 PM BST
Yeh I can understand the reasoning but when he's backed down from 16/1 to 7/2 and then you get Sweet Lightning beating Brae Hill it does leave a bitter taste. You'd have to think he would have won if given the chance to show what he can do.

Gosden stating he didn't want punters to lose their money !! What about the fortunes backed at ante post - all gone !!The man really does have a touch of arrogance
Report custardcream64 April 4, 2011 7:28 PM BST
The trainers first priority is to look after the horse for it's owner .
He felt the ground with the bare patches and sand was not suitable so withdrew the horse . Gosden shouldn't be slated just because punters ante-post bets went down the drain .If you back ante-post [ i don't ] then you are taking a big chance .The only thing i find a bit strange about all this is why he ran his other horse ?
