Denman to beat a coterie of unexposed second-season chasers giving them lumps? Unlikely.
Would prefer to be looking for a young pretender who will become a Gold Cup contender after this race.
Shortlist would be
Diamond Harry
Weird Al
Burton Port
Pandorama.

Diamond Harry arguably not suited to the small field cahses he was contesting last season, should settle better with Denman pouring it on here.
Will be trying to beat the current 7/1 over he coming days but that would do.

I think he'll win if the ground's soft.
Report liam the lips November 22, 2010 10:04 AM GMT
Couldn't agree more carvills, DH on ze spaffffffffffffff 4 me too. Hope he doesn't run The Package (doubtful lookin at betfair) thus freeing up the murf [:D]

Jacob on now Shocked
Report revedesivola November 22, 2010 11:26 AM GMT
all the better imo.
Report Swagger November 22, 2010 11:31 AM GMT
Soft horse in the finish - we have seen talented horses in recent years bottling it in the finish (Air Force One, What A Friend) having travelled well, Jacob is surely a negative compared to Timmy Murphy, the horse hasn't looked a good jumper of a fence, and there must be doubts if he will even stay. 7/1 looks short enough in my opinion.
Report carvillshill November 22, 2010 11:37 AM GMT
I think his disappointments have more to do with not being fresh. More than one paddock judge has noted that he loses condition as the season goes on. First time out is the time to catch him IMO. Hopefully the jockey change will cause him to drift a bit...
Report revedesivola November 22, 2010 11:45 AM GMT
highly unlikely carvillshill id say. id be a bit worried about how he hangs under pressure. daryl jacobs strike rate over fences this year is 9 percent better than timmy murphys on arguably worse horses. timmy couldnt get the horse to jump despite the fact that people rave about his ability to present horses at fences. personally id be more inclined to back DH with jacob on rather than murphy. still think timmy is good though

Can't see how he's soft in a finish. Was beaten a long way out at Cheltenham in the RSA Chase when he wasn't at his best and ran on really strongly when 3rd to Mikael D'Haguenet. I think Cheltenham doesn't really suit him but the trait to hang has never stopped him winning and this is a very good mark for such a talented horse.
Report mythical prince November 22, 2010 4:51 PM GMT
was dissapointed by this horse in the sun alliance given how impressive he'd looked up to that point. folded for me under pressure. However he's clearly one of the most gifted in this field and goes so well fresh, you'd have to give him a very good chance.
Report Far From Trouble November 22, 2010 6:10 PM GMT
Travels strongly in his races and got bags of speed. Think he's more suited to two and a half miles tbh
Report revedesivola November 22, 2010 6:45 PM GMT
yeah i thithe trip might beat him
Report ilikewavingatbuses November 22, 2010 9:27 PM GMT
fresh the time to get him, laughed at burton port over the fixed brush giving lumps last year first time up, great chance agreed.
Report revedesivola November 22, 2010 9:30 PM GMT
think hes gonna stay?
Report carvillshill November 22, 2010 9:49 PM GMT
How can you doubt his stamina ffs? His best peformance was over 3m1f at Haydock on bottomless.
Report revedesivola November 22, 2010 9:52 PM GMT
sorry carvills. for some reason i thought he was running over shorter
Report ilikewavingatbuses November 23, 2010 1:15 AM GMT
my only wory would be would he find much? feel hes a bit of a bridle horse, picture 3 out him pandorama, denman  they jump it, he makes a slight mistake and comes off the bit, is he gonna battle back to get by? im not so sure, no denying his talent tho, massive chance and again 1st time out last year you couldnt not be impressed.
Report dwm767 November 23, 2010 6:44 AM GMT
Makes too many jumping errors to win a Hennessey; I hope you all find a better price because he should be double what he is! Can't win.
Report revedesivola November 23, 2010 12:04 PM GMT
obviously hes not going to jump well having swiched to chasingmid season. im sure nick might have popped him over a fence since then.ilikewvingatbuses, id b inclined to agree than he doesnt find much for pressure
Report josef k November 23, 2010 12:19 PM GMT
I'm inclined to agree that DH should have a cracking chance. Be careful what you wish for with the ground though because we all know Denman can handle the soft! I was totally unshakeable in my view that Denman had an impossible task with his stopping weight last year and was therefore made to look a complete and utter tool, so I'm pretty cautious about ruling him out this time round.

wd carvills, your confidence was unshakable on this one.
Report cryoftruth November 27, 2010 4:03 PM GMT
I thought Diamond Harry made quite a few errors, he only won because he was so much better at the weights. He will have to jump better with practice is he is going to keep on winning.

He's pretty good though. Well done Carvills and of course Sir Tom.

I wouldn't have backed him with stolen money - very good call - well done carvills

Brilliant ride from Jacob, never doubted his stamina and best place to be when you're on the best horse. Would like to see him do a One Man and win the Queen Mother. He's got the basic speed and reminds me greatly of Gordon Richards' great grey.
Report revedesivola November 27, 2010 5:06 PM GMT
not a chance of it. gauvain is the champion chaser
Report booster November 27, 2010 5:12 PM GMT
Diamond Harry more talented but couldn't see him winning a Gold Cup. If he were mine I'd go King George and Champion Chase just like One Man. Price was a gift today, 9-1 for such a well handicapped beast with everything in his favour.
Report booster November 27, 2010 5:42 PM GMT
Should have added that I'm not certain he wants to go right handed but doesn't jump left.
Report Masterminded November 27, 2010 6:42 PM GMT
Very well done everyone who backed him today. I backed him soo many times over hurdles and over jumps last year but I just didn't think his jumping would keep him involved. I certainly didn't think he was going to be ridden so prominently and IMO that was a seriously good tactical decision. He could see all his fences and bossed it off of a low weight.

Great stuff Carvills, I followed you and pricewise in in the end, mainly just to have an interest in what was a historic race, he should finish in the first 4 in the Gold Cup. He was a pleasure to watch yesterday, the pacy way he travels reminds me a bit of Kauto.
Report carvillshill November 28, 2010 9:06 PM GMT
Cheers lads.
Wouldn't be rushing to back him for the Gold Cup myself, has come up short at the last 2 Festivals and seems best caught fresh. More interested in the second for the big one at 20/1 (or 16s with Ladbrokes with a run!)
Report wondersobright November 28, 2010 10:09 PM GMT
Lovely horse, but yeah I wasn't exactly thinking Gold Cup winning performance when he won.

Daryl Jacob could not have given the horse a better ride.
