Thanks Falbrav...

I have been living over here in Australia for nearly 4 years now and still havent got used to the way they campaign top class horses over all kinds of distances every couple of weeks.  Very different to the UK.  Imagine taking a Guineas winner, winning the Eclipse and then running it in the Caesarewitch!

Anyway, See You Think is obviously freakishly good, but I think I will making some small plays with the ones at the bottom that ran in the Lexus.

Good luck everyone!

MICK KINANE yesterday dampened hopes of a first Irish winner of the Melbourne Cup for eight years, arguing that the trip could well prove beyond Dermot Weld’s star filly Profound Beauty.

Twice a winner of one of the most prestigious races in the world with Vintage Crop and Media Puzzle, the Rosewell House trainer has come to Australia hoping to make it a hat-trick.
However Kinane, who was aboard Vintage Crop for the star’s seminal 1993 triumph, when he became the first jockey to ride an international horse to glory, has played down talk of another Irish raider taking home the gold next Tuesday.

Home charges Shocking and So You Think are currently vying for favouritism for the Flemington contest but Profound Beauty is not alien to the circuit either, having run a superb race there in the 2008 Melbourne Cup, finishing a creditable fifth.
But with her advancing years and a star-studded field — led by the aforementioned duo and also including French raider Americain and Caulfield Cup winner Descardo – Kinane isn’t so sure Profound Beauty, currently a 16-1 shot with Australian bookmakers, can better that run of two years ago.

"I question her ability to go the trip [3200 metres]. I think that a mile and six [2800 metres] is right on the limit for her," said the legendary pilot, back in Melbourne in his capacity as ambassador for Irish racing.
"When you saw her here a couple of years ago, nothing travelled better than her. She’s a beautiful filly, but I question her being able to get it because this year is a much stronger race."

Kinane, who retired last year after leading John Oxx’s Sea The Stars to racing immortality, was much sought after at a special Breakfast with the Stars in Melbourne this week, with the local media desperate to get his take on the rising star of Australian racing.

So You Think is the hottest property in town right now after last weekend’s dominant victory in the Cox Plate – a seventh win in 10 career races for the charge of legendary trainer Bart Cummings.
He was sired by Coolmore’s High Chaparral – a horse Kinane knew well as he was aboard for many of the epic victories enjoyed by Aidan O’Brien’s former favourite. And much like Profound Beauty, Kinane reckoned the marathon distance of the Melbourne Cup could just prove beyond So You Think.

"He is undoubtedly a horse with a lot of pace, a lot of early pace. He finds going quick very easy," he said.
"He started his run very early [in Saturday’s Cox Plate] and put the race to bed very quickly, which is always the hallmark of a good horse.
"But I doubt his ability to go 3200 metres.
"He did start to struggle that last 50 metres. He was at the top of his run. He can go all right but he’s got to change his style to last the 3200," added Kinane, who enjoyed six Group One victories aboard High Chaparral including Derby wins both sides of the Irish Sea and dual Breeders’ Cup victories.

Now standing at stud at Coolmore’s sprawling Australian operation on the lush plains of the Hunter Valley in New South Wales, High Chaparral has proved a prolific sire to this point – something which didn’t come as a shock to Kinane.

"I am not surprised he has been such a great success out here because he was so tough. He was a pretty strong staying horse," added Kinane, who, when asked if O’Brien’s charge would have been suited to Flemington responded with his trademark smirk.
"High Chaparral probably wouldn’t have got [the Melbourne Cup distance] but then he was never asked to."

DK apparantly furious with the vets in Oz for questioning the soundness of PB.

I think Kinane has a good point but that in mind, my hunch is that the mare will be ridden for a place this time

Reminds me a bit of '93 with Weld talking down Vintage Crop's chances so the bookies would push the price out.

The track manager seems to think that the track will improve to be a Slow 6 or Dead 5 , apparently.

How do the aussie going ratings trabslate into GB goings? ie slow 6
By:
Me2
When: 01 Nov 10 16:53
From what people are saying, it seems that what they call dead 4 and dead 5 would both be called Good here, albeit dead 5 being on the easy side of Good.

They're also saying that Slow 6 is on the Good side of Good to Soft!

One thing to bear in mind is that the Flemington track now has a sandy composition, which is one of the contributory factors in it not being as soft as one would originally think.

I'd welcome being corrected on any of this.

From S/Life website, Track news:

Four seasons in one day: In a very British manner, weather has dominated the talk leading up to the Cup and heavy rain has caused the pubilc car park to be closed with Victorian Racing Club spokesman Bridget Marcou saying "We've been assessing it and it's not going to be in the right condition for cars." Hmmm....are horse drawn carriages acceptable?

On a brighter note only light rain is expected prompting senior forecaster Scott Williams to add "We could do better, but I suppose we could do worse."

A phlegmatic Flemingtonian I suppose.

What does all that mean for the track? Well, extensive research had led me to discover that the going is rated between 1 and 10. Heavy 8 equates to soft, Good 3 to 'ideal track with some give' and that the best case scenario following the weekend's downpour was for the track to ride Dead 5 by Cup time.........make of that what you will but it looks like it's going to be on the slow side folks. Bad news for Bauer but good news for Manighar

I've backed the Hong Kong raider Mr. Medici e/w.

Sure to handle the likely easier conditions, won Group One Champions + Chaters earlier this season and went well for much of the way in the Caulfield Cup off a pretty long absense.

Distance is the obvious question mark but how many of his rivals face a similiar conundrum? A few I'd say. Plus, dual Melbourne Cup winner Darren Beadman in the saddle.

There's plenty in with chances though, and of the 24 ruuners, very few can be completely ignored. But at 50/1, Mr. Medici is well overpriced and must give a good account of himself and at leat a run for your momey. Best of luck all.
