I notice that French Navy is 3rd favourite for the Derby (and that Mordin thinks he should be favourite (!)). Has anyone seen him race - if so what are your thoughts ? Does he look a Derby type - I'm not convinced of the pedigree being by Shamardal out of a Woodman mare (who herself only looked to stay 10f)? Assume Godolphin are going to follow the same strategy as Rewilding re the Derby.

Well, the dam First Fleet won over 10f as a two-year-old (as well as a listed race over the same trip later in her career) but was never tried over 12f.  First Fleet's dam Frankova was a half-sister to Assatis (multiple Group race winner over 12f), Razeen (impressive winner of the Predominate Stakes over 10f, beating the top-class Elmaamul) and Warrshan (winner of the Gr.3 Gordon Stakes over 12f).  So there is plenty of stamina on the dam's side of the pedigree.  Shamardal (like his son Lope De Vega) won the French Derby over 10½f but was arguably better over a mile.  French Navy is certain to stay 10f, but it's anyone's guess whether he will be equally effective over 12f.  If he takes after his dam's family he should stay 12f.
