Is this another Supaseus who won the 9f handicap at the Guineas meeting in 2007 off a mark of 92. 2 1/2 years, 14 runs and one win later he landed the cambs off 8lb higher (100) as a six year old. Proponent won the same handicap a year later off 90 and 16 runs, one win and an 8lb higher mark later runs on saturday. Hes also 3 from 4 over 8 & 9 furlongs over the rowley mile and like Supaseus is a six year old. Spooky eh? Charlton has obviously improved this horse this year with 3 good efforts in top handicaps and whilst its not gone unnoticed by the bookmaking fraternity I still think 20-1 isnt a bad price for a horse that should be thereabouts. Does anyone know why Steve Drowne doesnt ride the horse anymore?
He has been running very consistently ths year and other than Nationalism there don't appear to be any potential blots on the handicap so given his liking for the course and a fair draw he looks a decent enough e/w poke at 16/1 or so.

Charlton did an interview a couple of weeks ago and felt this one would run his race, but felt this horse is not the handicapped improver you would expect to win a race like this. That said, we know that from his profile, and Charlton can be very canny indeed!
Interesting comparison with Supaseus. I think though that horse had only had a couple of races last season, in better company, before running in this, so I wonder if Proponent has actually been laid out for it like Supaseus was. He should run his race though and some bookies will offer 5 places.

Intrestingly, Proponent ran in the Sandown handicap last year where Supaseus finished 5th in before taking the Cambridgeshireavailable at 28/1 with Joe coral's. He was 2 lengths behind him in 7th. Caught my eye as well, as uncanny similarities.

I agree with the ground concerns and that he may not have any secrets from the handicapper but the cambridgeshire is a funny race, notwithstanding the lemming-like tendencies of some jockeys to converge on one rail or the other and the 9f trip is definitely a specialist trip. Pity the odds are relatively stingy for such a big field as I can see him going well without quite being good enough to win.
