Your totally right Ad man,Should the leader's slip up Im well within shooting distance, and I can honestly say picking my two subs has been the most headwreckingly painful fun I've had since I had a girlfriend
Report REM February 22, 2011 11:14 AM GMT
Trouble is chosing obvious subs will not out-fox all th ehigher placed lists. Chosing something obscure carries the risk of a total blow out. But hey, I think I have to gamble now (note to self, be braver at the start ( didn't I say that last year?)).
Report The Ad Man February 22, 2011 11:57 AM GMT
Obvious subs if you dont have them are:
Binocular - Champion prepared for one race
Master Minded - Somersby far too close for my liking
Big Bucks - is it possible that Grand Cru can beat him
Finians Rainbow -
Time for Rupert - banker for a lot of people

Now as the records of favs under 4/1 is so poor circa 8/9 from 60 in the last three years and Big Bucks is two of them !

Gold Cup is hugely competitive
Champion Hurdle is between three
What can win the Arkle and the RSA will be on most peoples minds - Time for Rupert and Finians will be massive choices for people me thinks

Hi

During the Bonus window we need to suppress the leaderboard containing ‘selections of the leaders’ as it would be considered unfair to publish their Bonus horses selections while the window is open.

However the overall leaderboard, minus selections was published in yesterdays Racing Post and will appear again in Friday’s edition.

The online leaderboard will available again early next week.

10 lists in Top 500 so need inspiration!
IMHO It basically revolves around a) play safe or b) take a high risk alternative

With ten lists you can afford to mix it up a bit. We really have only three in contention.

Interesting that Solwhit now goes for World Hurdle.

done my bonus list at last....must say it is a great weight of my shoulders..now wait for Racing Post to say scratched..stood on a stone!!!...good luck all
Report REM February 24, 2011 7:27 AM GMT
I was hoping they'd keep Solwhit ready for AIN as the 2 1/2 mile race is usually a weak affair and should be an easy 25 pts. He doesn't look like a 3m horse at this level(perhaps non-testing ground at an easy course) and his only trip to CHL was disappointing.

I've got four lists in the mix, so going to shake it up a bit. Still searching for a true dark horse.
Report REM February 24, 2011 7:54 AM GMT
Time For Rupert looks quite solid. I can only find one to give him a race. The only risk would be a fast pace and large field forcing some jumping errors. Think he was the last horse I scratched. Plain

Not so convinced about Finnan's Rainbow...

Same here REM..had Time For Rupert in my original lists and replaced with Reve De Sivola..what a total muppet!!!
Report REM February 24, 2011 1:51 PM GMT
Yep. I seem to have a knack of making wrong decisions at the eleventh hour.

I always used to include a few novices before the RSA and Arkle became 50 pointers. For the last few years I've taken the view that these are open races and that they are ideal for subs. What happens is that the hyped horses pick up enough points before CHL to merrit inclusion and come CHL I need to sub in for the other races too.

TFR's 2nd to Big Bucks was stand out form and it was just a question of will he jump. (Yes he can.)
Report JOCI Club February 24, 2011 6:08 PM GMT
We had very little to do with novices when compiling our original lists, thinking that they we're excellent candidates for bonus horses after we saw how the season unwould, so most of our subs will be novices and Ryanair horses.
Report JOCI Club February 24, 2011 8:45 PM GMT
Bonus horses selected and input safely!
Report REM February 25, 2011 11:25 AM GMT
All done and dusted. Had to go big with TFR and jumbled up the rest. Disappointing that so many of my outside fancies are not in the comp. Surely as they have a transfer window for Cheltenham they should at least add horses to the comp who feature prominently?

Report Rob February 25, 2011 7:27 PM GMT
You're right ad man, there are so few horses available to pick from, looking at the leaderboard's subs confirms this. From my own selfish point of view, they have vastly reduced my chances of any success as already had TFR, Medermit and Jessies Dream in a list in top 100. This list also had 10 scoring horses, therefore any of my subs' points (if any) will not count in full
Report ALDERBROOK_501 February 25, 2011 8:19 PM GMT
Like you guys..I was wanting to put in TFR BUT thought if Iwas to have a chance of getting in the money I had to take afew risks...so my strategy involved afew fancied horses like Menorah and Riverside Theatre mixed in perms with afew of the lesser lights such as Wayward Prince, Mourad and Fiveforthree..my thinking being if anything goes wrong with Big Bucks then hopefully one of Mullins two could take advantage...risky I know but a miss is as good as a mile!!!!Good luck all
Report Rob February 25, 2011 10:20 PM GMT
Correct - a miss is as good as a mile and I suspect the further down the leaderboard you go the more speculative the subs will be, the leaders have been very protective and cautious, probably too so imo, one or two outsiders and they're there for the taking
Report The Ad Man February 25, 2011 10:30 PM GMT
There are a couple of people who have a lot of lists left so their perms will be huge Buzzword has a load of perms i would think - if i could pick a list the guy in 2nd would be the one i would take anyway good luck boys

Cheltenham can sometimes be more difficult if you're in contention for a prize in the Ten To Follow comp. A few years ago, after Rooster Booster won the Champion Hurdle on the Tuesday, we were in 2nd place overall in the competition. Sadly, our list didn't have Moscow Flyer, who came out and won the Queen Mother on the Wednesday, aided by the two other contenders at the time (Latalomne, and another horse) falling either side of him a couple of fences from home. So it went from elation to despair.

Eventually finished 13th, but would have been top 10 had Rooster Booster not been short headed at Aintree a couple of weeks later.

Going into Cheltenham in 54th place, so without great expectations, but rather a slim chance. so hopefully the nerves won't be too bad.
Report TEN2FOLLOWER February 26, 2011 8:56 AM GMT
I have that many lists that I don't really keep a close track on them all, but some of my lowest lits overall seemed to have far better chances at Cheltenham,(in respect of current betting markets anyway).  I had a few with less than 200 points that have a horse below in the first half dozen in the betting in a 50pt race.  Low pointed, short priced horses at the moment include Imperial Commander, Binocular, Captain Chris, Somersby, Big Bucks.  And of course Denman and Kauto Star - and I wouldn't write either of those two off.

Alderbrook - with your bonus selection for your first list, you've done something I wouldn't consider doing: you selected a third Champion Hurdle horse, when you already had the 1st and 2nd favourites (in Binocular and Hurricane Fly) in your list. I'd have definitely left it to those two, and then targetted another bonus race e.g. Ryanair with my spare bonus horse, which would have given you full coverage of the 7 Cheltenham bonus races. It may well pay off for you however, so let's wait and see.

Risky, as you have 7 horses tied up in 2 bonus races (Gold Cup / Champion Hurdle).
Report JOCI Club February 26, 2011 11:41 AM GMT
A Menorah win would be horrible for us, as we were no big on him at the start of the comp, and as we had two Champion Hurdle horses in each list, could not justify bringing him in as a sub horses when we had 2 / 3 bonus races not covered.

Its over a season , JOCI let them win if they get a chance - the horse who wins this wont get that many more points for me ! I have a list in 16th - dont fancy it to win as think Cheltenham winners will include Menorah, Denman,Kempes, Master Minded but already had these races covered so you have to go with what you have -

Hurricane, Cue, Big Z, Big B, R Theatre, Long Run, Imp Comm, Solwhit, Silver by N and Golden Silver - subbed in Time for Rup and Finians - have other lists in top 100 and mixed them about a bit more Medermitt Gigginstown horses, etc - Tried to take a learning from a past comp where I left out Our Vic at sub stage, sometimes the obvious is a route best served - gob smacked that the ten leaders have not done the same - mind Buzzword has so many hovering lists that he must have loads of the top horses covered.I hope mine goes on to Aintree with a chance its all about fun really and it does save/cost you more in not backing some of your selections in races !

Shame about Albertas Run. AP threw everything at the horse for the last mile. Still moved up the table with MM. I think Peddlers Cross would stuff me, so need Binocular or any other in the hurdle. Then it's all down to WAF, although I don't know how many others ahead of me who have WAF too?

GL for the April prize JOCI.

I'm in 38th after Master Minded. Have got Binocular and Great Endeavour running today. Might be able to sneak into the money if they both win, and other results go my way. Best of luck to everyone still in with a shout.

Well done to your brother PH.

I don't like the subs either.

Well, a top 100 finish for me in the end. Which is a good run for my money and more than I expected. Strangely, all the question marks I had down against my horses came true - so I certainly can have no complaints!

Happy

I finished 73rd with 662 points. Another good effort, but not quite good enough to make the money.
