Start Right. Number 60 I think though? Although I think I looked and seen that lower rated horses have got in the last few years...

Elliptical for me,likes the track and any softening of the ground wouldn't be a concern[;)]
Report redal2 September 5, 2010 8:33 PM BST
I've got it down to about 20 Laugh, loads of these are in my notebook list. The likes of Beachfire, Con Artist and Caldercruix for example.
Report rhinestone September 5, 2010 8:38 PM BST
I read somewhere they were thinking of stepping Beachfire up to 1m4f, runs like he needs it...although the furious pace at 1m1f will suit, like it did Pipedreamer who had also only got to the front inside the final furlong over 1m2f on his previous start.
Report turnip turns September 5, 2010 8:41 PM BST
Taqleed is another, lightly raced and improving.
Report redal2 September 5, 2010 8:43 PM BST
That's my thinking rhinestone. Same with Caldercruix, a horse which likes a bit of cut and is still very green in his running style, needing a good gallop to run up to and then challenge without really knowing it's in a battle. Either that or it's not as good as I think, which is very possible
Report Beryl September 5, 2010 8:45 PM BST
Turnip, I like him too. He won well last time at Newmarket. He's very well bred and has loads of potential. Only thing is, Gosden has a few entered for this and I'm just worried he won't run him in it.

Thought Beachfire would need further than 10f myself, Fancied Forte Dei Marni for this event for a awful long time as a 9f cavalry Charge would be up its street, Now its come back down a couple of pounds you couldnt ignore Tartan Ghiga's 9f form either
Report redal2 September 5, 2010 8:49 PM BST
Agree about Tartan Gigha zilzal, but I never ever get Johnston horses right
Report zilzal1 September 5, 2010 8:54 PM BST
Taken from Luca's site, i would wait on Forte for this reason

Forte Dei Marmi is probably due a fall next time judged on his form figures since reappearing in 2009 but it’s significant in our eyes that two of his lesser performances this year have come at York where the surface is inclined to get a bit loose on top and the official going descriptions, or those reported by the riders in general, don’t tally with the opinions provided by our own version of the ‘going stick’ which has served us well for many years. Back away from York, Forte Dei Marmi returned to winning ways with his best performance and from a handicapping perspective probably deserved the small rise in the weights that he has been given as a result. With Australia Day and Opera Gal taking each other on in front, he got the strong pace that suits him ideally and the manner in which he finished his race, going away at the finish, put to bed any doubts that he is a doubtful stayer at a mile and a quarter. His next objective, as it was probably always going to be anyway, is the Dubai Duty Free Heritage Handicap at Newbury, where he won earlier in the season, but any plans beyond that will have to wait until we see how he runs and how the handicapper responds. If he runs at Newbury, he won’t run in the Cambridgeshire – we tried that route with Monte Alto and he wasn’t the same horse afterwards.

Redal, i back quite a few Johnstone horses(never when they are short though) i think Below Zero will go close at Donny on Wednesday, and that Thebes will be winning again quite soon(preferably in a smaller field over 7f)

Presumably Gosden, Johnston and others with multiple entries will wait and see what is going best nearer the time. I also am looking carefully at trainers like Simcock who has entries which haven't run for some time presumably to protect their mark.

I'm in the Beachfire camp. I'm sure he could get a mile and a half but that's not necessarily a drawback in this race. I remember Clifton Fox doubling up in the November Handicap on soft after his Cambridgeshire win for the awesome Jeremy Glover. Nice to see his name back in the trainers list. Rambo's Hall...happy days. We were dancing in the streets of Retford.

Morning all.

Start Right for me so far as at least Luca has signposted him as a likely runner on his site. The number of runners make this a pretty poor e/w race so even if 1/4 1st 6 is available on the day I will probably look for 1 or 2 others win only.

Not blown away by Cityscape's performance on Saturday as the runner-up and his jockey made a most unfortunate partnership.

While I like both of the Gosden horses mentioned on here I'm not convinced either would be ideally suited by the drop back in trip. Against that neither of them have been entered in the valuable 10f at Newbury on the 18th  - which is interesting.

Finally Absinthe looked impressive when beating little at Windsor. Connections skipped the opportunity to run in a decent race the following weekend and may be aiming her at this. Unclepuncle might have some insight here as he is often on the ball with this stable.

Fair Trade has a massive chance, thought good enough to contest a classic at the start of the year he has the potential to a group horse judged on several efforts this season notably when an eyecatching fourth behind the highly progressive sea lord and the subsequent group 2 winner poets voice in a group 3 on his latest start.Added to this he represents a yard who have had success in this twice in the non to distant past

What are people's thoughts on Sandor's run at Sandown last week?

Think the Cambridgeshire will suit the horse in the way it's run.
Report unclepuncle September 18, 2010 8:48 PM BST
Was a bit surprised they ran Sandor in the Sandown race - guess they were looking for a win rather than running for place money in the big Newbury hanidcap that was run today. He seems to find one or two too good each time and maybe is pretty exposed now but the Sandown race that Forte dei Marmi won has worked out really well with Forte and Elliptical fighting out the big handicap today and Jo'Burg winning at York, so I haven't given up hope of a decent run from Sandor, and hopefully the unique demands of the Cambridgeshire will suit him.

I've also had a little nibble on Jo'Burg at 70 just in case he goes for the race.

FWIW, here are some notes I made last year.

1    Look for a progressive and unexposed horse to win or even place, That probably means a 3yo (only if good enough) or 4yo that has not had many runs.. The winner is very likely to be group horse in waiting.

2    Old timers have little chance of even placing, unless there are few progressive horses in the race. Lay anything that hasn't shown its best form on the day of race ground condtions, or non-stayers

3    Selections must have proven they can stay 10f or at very least that 8f has seemed inadequate.

4    Big strong galloping types should be preferred, and big weights for this type of 3yo should not deter.

Emirates Dream for me, looks like he's improving again now (only beaten just over a length by the Arc fav BEHKABAD last year), he's near the top of my handicap, fits all the stats for this and looks value for me at 18/1.

Frankie will trying to win the weekends big handicap for the 3rd week in a row and Godolphin have a very good record in handicaps.

Good luck...
