Stable is about 15 miles from the course - I would normally drift down about 8.30, watch horses work until about 9.30. Trainer may be persuaded to provide coffee, then off to the Hollow Bottom for breakfast (which usually lasts until the 1st Guiness) - then off racing.

If you can all agree on a date I will arrange. Friday is probably more inconvenient but you will see the horse do some serious work, Saturday is more laid back and they will canter rather than work. I am sure we can swing the coffee, there was even flapjack and kit kats when I was last there !!!

Why don't we run up NTDs gallop and jump the fences you can see from the golf course - would be just as energetic as walking that monster golf course but would only take a fraction of the time!!
La Mall
I am going to DM's for lunch tomorrow I will give him your regards if he is about

Lets see how numbers go Carvillshill - if necessary I could split into two days. Whatever happens you will get the chance to see him work, feed him a carrot and have any photos taken if you wish. I just think it is importsnt the sport is inclusive and this is a better way then scarves !

I'm travelling straight to cheltenham on the Friday morning from afar, so would not be able to make this, but what a generous gesture! I adore Imperial, superstar horse, and what a treat. You are a great credit Bobby!

Reading back through the thread I have Howdi, Beryl, Masterminded, Stormey1, Savaloy 69, Stace, Reyes, Mr Eboue, Zilzal1 and Carvillshill as potential attendees.
I have received e.mails from Beryl and one other who didn't send me his Betfair name. I suspect there should be more but we operate state of the art spam filters which scrap all of the good stuff but make sure you are never short of offers to extend your manhood ! I have now set up a seperate OFITN webserver to avoid this, so if you have e-mailed but have not has a reply could you please resend to info@ourfriendsinthenorth.com
Thx

Interesting question Howdi I suspect my view on this is likely to be way out of sync with most.
We are not in an era of exceptional horses, we are just in an era where the hype is bigger than the substance of the form behind it and we have a handicapper who cannot resist issuing higher and higher marks. It appears the press need heros and those heros need to be invincible or else they are devalued.
The performance required to win a Gold Cup has varied little in the last 40 years. Despite the fact the fences are made of paper compared to the old structures, they have been moved to positions on the course to make them easier to jump, the drainage means the going is consistently better than it was, and the weights were reduced by 4lbs in 2004 the times in relation to ground conditions on the day remain remarkably consistent over the period. Whilst I do not argue any two Gold Cups can be compared on the basis of time, over the larger sample any golden age of chasers would have had to be reflected in the overall times, especially given the weight reduction. Indeed the results are so consistent that it points to a clear line of performance - I know this flies in the face of those who like to talk about good Gold Cups and poor Gold Cups, and a golden age of chasers but that argument is based upon the fact the race produced a result on the day they didn't like. It doesnt mean that the performance the horse produced was not above the defined standard. Let me be clear I do not detract from the brilliance of Kauto Star in any way, but in my view his brilliance has been in being able to produce championship standard performances with awesome consistency. That is not the same as saying his championship performance are better than the championship performances of other winners - which I believe is demonstably not true.
So for me the question was always which horses have the potential to produce such a performance and on the basis of last year race my conclusion was Imperial Commander, Kauto Star and Denman. Hence my determination to go for the Gold Cup, even though we were bombarded with the advice that the Ryanair was ours on a plate.
On that basis I cannot see any of last years field being a serious threat as I do not believe they are capable of producing the level of performance required. So the question is are any of the up and coming brigade able to bridge that gap, and are those three horses still able to produce the level of performance required. On the basis of last season's novice form I cannot pinpoint any horses with the potential to run the required standard, nor do I know whether KS, IC or Denman will be able to continue to produce that level of performance. So at this stage I see it as a wide open contest.
I have a list of around 10 younger horses who have to find a lot but may conceivably be able to produce that level of performance, and whether they are capable of doing that should become clear when they reappear. The picture on KS, IC and Denman will be clearer after the Betfair Chase and the JN Wines (if anything turns up to make a serious challenge). But as it stands the answer is Kauto Star and Denman as they are the only two horses that can produce the standard of performance required.

I concur with much of what you've written Bobby, hopefully your musings on the relative merits of the Gold Cup horse's won't be met with the usual derision of the Denman/Kauto Star camps. Nobody can stop the march of time, and it is time and age that will eventually blunt the edge of last seasons top staying chasers. Personally, I think the coming 2010-11 season (for me, it is yet to start properly) has the potential to be one of the most exciting in years for the gambler. Right now, there is the potential to find horse's, as yet unproven, at huge odds that will go on to win at the Festival and repay the faith of those brave enough to invest early.

It is great to see a owner and a yard that wants to promote the sport so much. Thanks for the offer once again bobby.
I was wondering if you could name one horse that didn’t run in the gold cup last year that you think could step up and look a challenger to yourselves.

What a fantastic gesture Bobby. Is the offer still open?
I'd be very interested if so and I'm local too.
If not, no worries - and I hope everyone has a brilliant day out.

Offer still open Lee SHA - to be fair I have probably underestimated interest but I can work on accomodating the numbers once I have a definitive list.

Hi Kauto Kauto - got your e.mail will reply this evening.
On the issue of horses who can challenge I think odds are that one of the three IC, KS or Denman will defy the age statistics and train on - they are some way clear of the rest.
My list of horses who could improve to the required standard would be Forpadydeplasterer / Carruthers / Planet Of Sound / Mad Max and Weird Al.

Out of interest the unamed horse who was his companion on that day won the Uttoxeter bumper today.

Won it well lay preacher, but not sure what he beat, Saint Luke is a moderate point winner under a penalty. Having said that he won it pretty much as he liked and has had plenty of experience for a 4-y-o. He is undoubtedly a smart prospect, and a striking individual, my worry is that he will see too much racing too soon
