SOMERSBY will be campaigned over two miles this season and is therefore unlikely to be aimed at the Totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup, trainer Henrietta Knight said on Wednesday.
The six-year-old finished second behind Sizing Europe in this year's Arkle Chase, but didn't get the trip when subsequently upped to two and a half miles in the Totepool Manifesto Novices' Chase at Aintree, finishing a nine-length second to Mad Max.
Speaking to At The Races, Knight said: "I think we'll keep him running over two miles this season; he didn't quite get home at Aintree on his last run."
Somersby has been quoted at as short as 12-1 for the Gold Cup, but his trainer stated that a shot at the big race was unlikely to be part of the plan.
"He's much more likely to run in the Ryanair Chase at Cheltenham - he probably won't be a Gold Cup horse," she added.

Mad Max did look special at Aintree - not convinced Somersby does n't stay but still young enough to take in Ryanair this year possibly en route to Gold Cup in 2012. Might be same with Long Run but probably depends on what happens at Kempton on Boxing Day.

Back to Mad Max. He ran well in the Arkle which i was a bit surprised to be honest, but despite that i really feel that Cheltenham is not his ideal track, and the further the distance i think the track will get the better of him.

I would be surprised if Somersby didn't end up in the Ryanair this season. Looks a pretty logical step as I don't think he's quite quick enough for the Queen Mum and the trainer is hardly going to be running him in the GC this season.
