I'm not surprised about Somersby. He's always looked a 2 miler to me.
What are the plans for Sizing ?

What are the plans for Somersby?
Report Bobby Dazzler September 1, 2010 5:27 PM BST
SOMERSBY will be campaigned over two miles this season and is therefore unlikely to be aimed at the Totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup, trainer Henrietta Knight said on Wednesday.

The six-year-old finished second behind Sizing Europe in this year's Arkle Chase, but didn't get the trip when subsequently upped to two and a half miles in the Totepool Manifesto Novices' Chase at Aintree, finishing a nine-length second to Mad Max.

Speaking to At The Races, Knight said: "I think we'll keep him running over two miles this season; he didn't quite get home at Aintree on his last run."

Somersby has been quoted at as short as 12-1 for the Gold Cup, but his trainer stated that a shot at the big race was unlikely to be part of the plan.

"He's much more likely to run in the Ryanair Chase at Cheltenham - he probably won't be a Gold Cup horse," she added.

Thanks Bobby.

he'll probably have one this year, going down to none in future years as hen wraps him up in cotton wool. i wonder what would happen if they sent somersby to jim bolger?
Report mythical prince September 1, 2010 9:43 PM BST
one run
Report mythical prince September 1, 2010 9:50 PM BST
incidentally the horse that beat somersby at aintree, mad max, is destined for the very top (imo)

Bit surprised if SE is not trained for QM.Not surprised at Somersby staying at 2m.
RE Mad Max- be surprised if 26f round Cheltenham would suit him.
Report bigben September 2, 2010 3:09 PM BST
Im not convinced that any trip at Cheltenham would suit him personally.

buddLove how are you?

Remember when Mad Max career was under threat last season now he's seen as a Gold Cupprer
Report mythical prince September 2, 2010 3:45 PM BST
ran pretty well in the arkle.. needs a longer trip
Report ReaseHeath September 2, 2010 5:57 PM BST
Mad Max did look special at Aintree - not convinced Somersby does n't stay but still young enough to take in Ryanair this year possibly en route to Gold Cup in 2012. Might be same with Long Run but probably depends on what happens at Kempton on Boxing Day.
Report Howdi September 2, 2010 6:40 PM BST
long run confuses me

kempton - awesome
chels - distinctly below par

may be a flat tracker
Report bigben September 2, 2010 7:30 PM BST
He may well be better on a flat track. But i just wonder if having nine runs in twelve months took there toll?
Report ReaseHeath September 2, 2010 7:44 PM BST
that and the fact that he's only 5. Actually thought his RSA run was pretty decent if you take away the hype going in to the race.
Report Howdi September 2, 2010 8:42 PM BST
good point Ben
Report Howdi September 2, 2010 8:44 PM BST
the winner of thre RSA some horse round Cheltenham Id have him fav. if he was fit.
Report ReaseHeath September 2, 2010 9:23 PM BST
agree Howdi - would n't rule him out yet either after his stable's Solwhit escapade last season.

Ok mate, having a rest over the summer.Need a break from April - November to recharge!! All starts again then for me and look forward to a few exchange of views!!

Back to Mad Max. He ran well in the Arkle which i was a bit surprised to be honest, but despite that i really feel that Cheltenham is not his ideal track, and the further the distance i think the track will get the better of him.
Report TD_Gunner September 3, 2010 9:06 AM BST
I would be surprised if Somersby didn't end up in the Ryanair this season. Looks a pretty logical step as I don't think he's quite quick enough for the Queen Mum and the trainer is hardly going to be running him in the GC this season.
