Just want to come on and put my pennies worth in about the sussex stakes on Wednesday after reading what you thought on previous pages.

I honestly cannot see where you are all getting all of this faith from about RVW. Last year he was unbeatable when not racing against STS! Though his last run of the season was just too bad to be true, he was not much better on his first run this season either, yis can all say he may have needed the run, but look through his form, his first run of last season was a top notch effort so why should it not have been a similar display this time? His run in the breeders cup, his last run last season came at the end of a very tough season and this was the excuse given by ballidoyle. I cannot have him.

If 8 run, it is a dirty e.w race for sure, but RVW cannot place, not for me.

Canford Cliffs is the form horse this season, he simply cannot be beaten in this and i would love to be proved wrong, well i hope i'm not because at 4/5 i just cannot ignore that when all the tissues only yesterday were 4/6 and i can also back 2 others e.w at 10/1+ as a little savour just in case we get a surprise. I'm thinking a 50 win on canford @ 4/5 korals and 10 e/w premio 9s or better and same bet dream eater at 11s or better.

I've got to go with the form of this season, it is a rule of mine, backing horses on the basis of past form has always been a very dangerous game for me.

GL to all who play in this, but it aint anywhere near the race of the season either as many are trying to say it is. That was the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot.

Oh dear sack me NOW, my mathematics are terrible, (50 win @ 4/5 = 90 with 10e/w twice = 90 stake) thats not worth it either is it haha, will have to re-think that one, but will look into it haha!!!   [;)][:o][smiley:crazy]

hi seathestars,i respect your opinion re rip van winkle, but i honestly cant believe u think he wont even place in this race! granted he ran a shocker at ascot, but a lot of horses run bad races at ascot,im willing to give him one more chance,if he cant place in this they surely have to retire him
Report SEATHESTARS....NO1 July 26, 2010 6:39 PM BST
Well kauto, those are my sentiments exactly mate. Every season we see a potential superstar come back, run a couple shockers, then get retired, could this time round be RVW. We will have to wait and see, but that is my hunch. Hope i am wrong like. But hope at the same time i have backed the winner and i much rather a easy winner by 10 lengths or a head bobber, cos their not good for the ticker lol, gr8 when they go your way, proper tw@t when they dont.

As an older person with years of experience (some bitter), I have learned never, ever to back odds on in mile or mile plus races at Goodwood. The track, although in a beautiful setting, is a death trap for unwary punters. Too many times the best horse loses at Goodwood because of interference or bad luck in running.

The racing post preview this week worked out that over a quarter of milers running at Goodwood suffer interference. It is sure that a hold up horse is much more likely to be denied a clear run than a front runner.

I agree with all those supporting Canford Cliffs. He should beat a less than fit and still to prove himself at 4 Rip Van Winkle. However this is Goodwood and if I bet it will be each way on the third favourite, an honest improver from a smaller yard that will offer a bit of value.

Yeah i am thinking the same thing myself now cryofttruth after now missing all the nice prices and value. If i have to have a bet, it will be an e.w on premio loco, am thinking now about going against my first opinion on RVW and backing him e.w now as well though the i still think canford wins this easily on the bridle!
Report Roger De Bris July 27, 2010 1:53 PM BST
guessing the well-being/effectiveness of RVW would be wasting your time. Leave him alone, back and lay. You could have said the same about Fame And Glory, form tailed off last year, beaten on his comeback, and then............a place lay on his 2nd run was he??

CC looks the winner but not too keen on a horse that is held up to deliver very late.
Report SEATHESTARS....NO1 July 27, 2010 3:04 PM BST
No Roger, i laid fame and glory both of his first two runs of the season, first time up on very heavy ground at 1.46 and then again the time after when he won (think i got greedy) Don't think his form tailed off, just think it was pitched in two ultra competitive races at the end of quite a tiring season last year, one which was won by the great STS (the arc) and the other in Newmarkets champion stakes where actually i backed Twice Over.

RVW is very different, his breeders cup run was just too bad to be true and this season he just seemed no different, very lacklustre in a race he ought to have finished alot closer in whether needing the run or not!

this is set up for rip van winkle. same as last year. dictate and stay on far too good for these and far better anyway.
canford cliffs totally wrong price imo. rvw a bet at 11/4 for sure

I wonder if Beethoven can run in to a place at 33/1. Good effort on his re-appearance so you never know, although i think CC is the most likely winner as in my mind they have the Breeders Cup in mind with RVW.

I toyed with the idea of a Reel Buddy style shocker from Mac Love.

But decided to go instead for Premio Loco.

Tough, honest, C&D winner, unbeaten this year, 3rd run off
break. deserving of his place in this race.

Hold most of these on previous form and I think Rip has regressed.

He had some hard races last season and think he's had enough.

So I'll go for the Loco eachway.

10 of the last 10 winners finished 1st or 2nd last time out
9 of the last 10 winners had run between 3 and 5 times that season

RVW doesnt fit these trends

oooooooooooh stats with a sample size of 10.

away with thy cobblersLaugh
Report blackbarn July 27, 2010 11:28 PM BST
Gart - minor point but the sample size is 10 races x no. of runners. Admittedly based on this increased sample size, chatterboxes "stats" no longer have the same appeal.

Six out of every four punters don't understand statistics.

Well i have placed my first bet this week and it is on the sussex, after all i have said on this thread and others i have decided to side with

RIP VAN WINKLE WILLY HILLS 3/1 -- E/WAY THIEVERY AT IT'S VERY BEST

Just couldn't resist at that price in a race of this nature, he probably won't place, but the chances of that, well are pretty slim aint they if he is fit and well!
