LOL - Zafonic had won a Dewhurst by 4l in 1m23.6, though!
It isn't impossible Makfi will win, but it is at least 40-1 on what he has shown imo.
Let's not forget there are horses in this race like Dick Turpin, who has won a recognised trial and probably has the best speed figure in the race - at 25-1.

Since when was the Greenham a recognised Guineas trial ? If Makfi was trained by Fabre then he would be half those odds. Makfi actually tops the trends analysis for the race alongside Awzaan and for me was massive e/w value at 50/1, even the best price 33/1 is still way too big.

Makfi isn't trained by Fabre, so your point is irrelevant.
Not necessarily saying DT will win or that greenham is a particularly strong trial, but he represents far better value than Makfi, who is essentially just a shot in the dark. The horse hasn't proved he has any of the necessary credentials imo...

The mole at 40/1 it was slightly over priced considering the visual impression it gave on its last run. That was my view earlier after watching its run a few times. At as low as 20's and a general 25's it is now its fair price. I have said I dont think it will win but at 40's worth worth a small investment on a horse that could improve 10lb but in all probabillity wont.

To be fair the mole seems to put a lot of faith in speed ratings and that's fair enough if it works for him, although caution should be used with Dick Turpin who i can't see getting a mile. What makes (getting close to made now) Makfi value is what he could potentially do given the style with which he's won his trial. I don't feel there's any reason to use the ground as a negative; we don't know what Dubawis like although we know he probably didn't like fast ground but being out of a Green Desert mare would suggest Makfi could well take to and improve for to fast ground so there is a chance. The progress this horse has made from being a 26 grand purchase at the end of last season is phenomenal and he looks to be on a real upward curve, his trainer looks to have found something in him. Definitely needs to step up again so any current figures to his name are right but he looks to have the profile to do so.

Yeah speed ratings on their own plainly don't work consistently to be a profitable method on their own. Also, the fastest horses don't win the Guineas as we will see when the likes of Canford Cliffs ends up in the July Cup ;-)
To say Dick Turpin is better value than Makfi was/is made me laugh though ;-)

Who said anything about speed figures on their own?
The horse hasn't run fast enough to win a guineas, the horse hasn't proved he goes on the ground, his form (ignoring time considerations) is a long way short of what will be required. Hiis trainer - has he ever had a runner in the Guineas?
Yes - it is unexposed, but so is Elspeth's Boy....

Don't be such a party pooper, moley. 6 of the top 7 bets on here fall under my wing and I'm getting excited.
C'mon - say something nice about Le Makfi....

I can now embrace the day with renewed optimism, le mole. ALLEZ MAKFI.
Does anyone have an opinion on his draw? Can't work out if 15's a touch or not....

I'd be lying if I said I had any clue - I'm sure they will just make it up as they go along. Possible Red Jazz could lead a group low, but who knows...

To be fair Mikel Delzangles has only been training since 2001 so it's harsh to point to his non existent record in the race. Can't find a lot out about him but he used to be assistant trainer to Alain De Royer-Dupre. Looks like he has about a quarter of the horses the 'powerhouse' stables have. He was 31st in the trainers table by wins last year but interestingly looks to have a better percentage win to runner and also runs record than pretty much all those above him (worked it out roughly in my head!) which is quite interesting and perhaps he's an up and coming trainer to take note of, hope so anyway :) Agree being near the favourite can be no bad thing although they don't want to watch him to closely because his turn of foot could kill them so they need to run their own race.

1 winning favourite since Zafonic in 1993. No horse in the last 10 years was foaled later than 7th April. Good luck with the fav :-)
Makfi and Awzaan are strongest on overall trends and represent the value in the race.

Top Trends horse, had it and the 6k tricast this is what I sent out via formbet.co.uk -:
I've also taken a look at the 2000 Guineas trends (1000 Guineas tomorrow) using a combination of trends taken from various places. I have only had one bet on the 2000 Guineas so far and it's on the French horse MAKFI each-way at 40/1 and it was before I had done the trends analysis so the fact he comes out joint-top I was pretty amazed about and he rates a value each-way bet at this stage. The other strong trends contender is Mark Johnston's AWZAAN who at 10/1 is also worth a 1pt win. I will wait to see what the ratings say on Saturday and when I have had another look at the breeding before going in again but my hunch is to be against the favourite who looks more a Derby type, then again I thought that about Sea The Stars before the 2000 last year ! However, there is no 12/1 or 14/1 for St Nicholas Abbey for the Derby this time so I'm leaving that race along till nearer the time.
Makfi is by Dubawi out of a half-sister to 2000-Guineas placed Alhaarth dam who was also a dam to Aqaleem from the family of Authorized. The dams sire Green Desert ended up a champion sprinter but only found Dancing Brave too good in his Guineas. Dubawi is fast becoming a sire of Group-1 winners and himself ran well when 5th in the 2000 Guineas before winning the Irish equivalent so on breeding Makfi looks up to the mile trip and has decent quality in there.
One method that has served me well in the past for a horse to follow or in this race is to look at a runner that ran well or won the Prix Djebel as MAKFI did impressively last time. I was on both Pennekamp and Zafonic following decent runs in that trial back in the '90's and watching them strut round the paddock they were just different gravy to the others. Other Djebel winners from the '90's were Machiavellian and Lycius who both won the Djebel and ran close 2nd's at Newmarket. Not much has attempted the follow up in recent years, Whipper found the ground too lively at Newmarket in 2004 but went on to become a Group 1 performer as did Marchand D'Or and last year's French 2000/French Derby winner Le Havre also won the Djebel impressively. Then there was US Ranger who won the Djebel and then ran 2nd on the far side in the 2007 Guineas. Now, if MAKFI was trained by Andre Fabre or was still a Tregoning/Maktoum colt then I am sure he would be at least half his current 40/1 odds in the betting. The trainer/jockey are capable of winning decent races though as they showed with Chineur a few years ago who won the King's Stand at Royal Ascot. The only slight worry is he has only won on soft ground but the trainer reckons better ground will not be a problem and that he will improve for that last run in the Djebel where he showed a really good turn of foot in the closing stages. With the top class Christophe Lemaire in the plate he could just run a big race at an each-way price in a race that I feel lacks a bit of strength in depth. You can view his Djebel win on Youtube here - : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o41UKUXz4e4

Well done winners, saw this but backed CC and FM instead.
Thought about having Makfi in my Ten to follow this morning, but obviously horse not there. Shambolic competition, going to be embarrassing when Cutlass Bay and Kasbah Bliss also win some bonus races.

That's the point, Makfi wasn't even there! There are only 250 horses to choose from.
I haven't chosen a single filly, hopefully Rumoosh will win because she isn't on the list and my older horses like Overdose can mop up.

sorry, mate - must read the posts better - I was also wanting to put Ramoosh in - went for the Gaodolphin filly in the end more with a view to The Oaks than tomorrow's Guineas

This is the report from his win at Fonty last year:
Makfi (Dubawi) showed himself to be a serious colt in the 24,000 Prix du Loing (2yo Males-1400m). Matthieu Offenstadts charge sat on the rail in 6th position and had no difficulty seeing off the challenge of Allesson (Ransom OWar) in the straight. The favourite took his time to find his action, and drifted slightly coming up the middle of the straight, but made up ground on the winner in the dying strides.

Bit of a sore head this morning :(

Yep. Well done to all the backers. I read this thread but was dissapointed when I saw the horse in the paddock. Still couldnt back it today even though I know it won. Funny game innit.

It is my belief that DUBAWI lost the 2000gns because he was not given a prep, beforehand, the going had nothing to do with his loss. An acceptance of being human and fallible is not a trait that godolphin and their employees, own up to, until they become more flexible in their methods they will NOT reach the heights they aim for. Could do better.

Taken a while to post, yesterday and last night was one long alcoholic celebration.
Backed the winner at average of 80-1 and laid **SYWOO £200 on the Montjeu horse that was never going to stay.
How do you want to pay **SYWOO?

One last chance to pay my respects to the French ace....
Makfi, this year's 2000 Guineas hero, has been retired to stud after suffering a bout of ringworm.
The Mikel Delzangles-trained three-year-old was a hugely impressive winner of the Newmarket Classic in May, and enjoyed further Group One glory by defeating the might Goldikova in the Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville.
Although he was disappointing in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot last month, connections had been considering a possible trip to the Breeders' Cup.
He will instead take up stallion duties at Tweenhills Stud in Gloucestershire.
"He came back from Ascot with a little bit of ringworm from Ascot and he has been retired to stud," confirmed Delzangles.
"He's been a great horse to train this season and we have had a great year.
"It will be difficult to find another one like him, but we will try."
