Talking to my old man this morning and he was reminiscing about dogs that he was involved in around this period, when he was helping the odd bookie at Shawfield. He was friendly with two local guys here in Ayrshire, and they owned a series of dogs around this time, all with the obvious MO of landing a punt. He spoke of havin a third share in a dog they bought from the Shawfield owner at that time, Gerry somethingorother, called Nick's Punch.
On the night they punted it they got £570 on at 4/1 and 7/2, the dog started at 3/1 on won. He said they counted the money out, mostly in old white fivers, and stuffed it in the glove compartment.
At this time he was earning £9 9s 9d as an engineering apprentice, whilst his partners had a newsagent and licenced grocers business.
What a strength of a ring in those days must ther have been to be able to bet to take £2.5k out, whilst only shortening a dog from 4s to 3s? He says that gambles of this magnitude were not uncommon, and in fact if they really wanted a bet laid they went to Kilmarnock dogs, where you usually had to fight also.
Changed days from Baldfred refusing you a score on a 5/1 shot.

johnn I doubt he was on so much a week in 1949, probably 9s 9d, when I started as an apprentice in 1971 I only got £5 a week, less 52p NHI.
