With a positive forecast up in Scotland meaning the potential defection of the fav, now is the time to be thinking about a shortlist for the Whitbread. Given the number of entries that a) ran an Aintree and b) could head up to Scotland, that are to the fore of most bookies prices (currently 14/1 the field!) we need to be on alert to snaffle some value as soon as it becomes clear what's happening with Denman.
Personally I'm looking for a horse rated no higher than 145, aged between 7-9, previously won that season (or must have at last placed), previously won over 24f+ and run at the Festival (this season). Previous course form is also a brucie.
Not going to be dogmatic on trends but that's the type of 'profile' i'm looking for. Using the above as a base, my pin has fallen down on:
Massasoit Nenuphar Collonges Theatrical Moment Boychuck Any Currency
Of the above only Massasoit doesnt have an entry at Ayr. TM and Boychuck are also engaged at Cheltenham next week.
Probable stacks of inacurancies as was only a quick look but feel free to c+p over there.
Main point is now is the time to be drawing up the shortlists in anticpation of geting one over the bookies ;)

Definitely a busy morning today as plenty of horses worked and we also had lots of owners visiting.
Joe Stainer was in first lot where most mainly just cantered and he was keen to see Palmers Peak, Any Currency and Badly Bruised. Any Currency is well on course for the Bet365 Gold Cup and Joe also thought the other two went well.
Really appreciate you highlighting sands - time to go balls deep ;)
With a lot of horses now heading up to Ayr in Denman's absence AC is stonking value @ 25s imo.

Yeah, got that wrong... was looking at it late last night so perhaps I went on BF rather that the Post... not sure and certainly don't understand why not quoted on here.

HFC - Any Currency, backed him at C/ham, can see him powering home at Sandown, proper in-running horse - travels, has flat spots, looks beat ...then boom ..i hope. :)

Could be... although as i'm rubbish at identifying a horse to even place in the race I doubt i'm much better at indetifying a potential runner in a year or two's time! ;)

I wouldn't put you off Eric's Charm - ran a belting trial on Saturday. Showed great early speed for a stayer to snatch the initiative, led Don@t Push it and Black Apalachi a merry dance early on and nothing could get it off the bit.

Given that I still refer to the Newbury handicap hurdle as 'The Schweppes',how long will it be until the Sandown race is no longer referred to as ' The Whitbread'?
A bit of unexpected bonus there for the past sponsors,I think.

Eric's Charm a confirmed runner (so long as it's not firm !)
TRAINER Oliver Sherwood intends to let stable veteran Eric's Charm take his chance in the Grade 3 Bet3-6-5 Gold Cup at Sandown on April 24 despite his Grand National showing.
Eric's Charm's place at Sandown was to be determined by his performance in the John Smith's Grand National but the 12-year-old got no further than the first fence where he was a faller.
Before his early exit at Aintree, Eric's Charm had landed a veteran's chase at Newbury and the Betinternet.com London National over the Bet365 Gold Cup course and distance on 3m5½f.
Writing on his website, Sherwood said: "Eric has returned absolutely fine will now head to the Bet365 at Sandown. We hope that it rains before then as he won't run if the word firm is mentioned."
Eric's Charm, a general 16-1 chance for the Bet365 Gold Cup, is a dual winner over fences at Sandown and was a close second to Lacdoudal in the 2006 running of the race.

VERY decent of them though - only sent the e-mail as hour ago.
Thanks for your email. Any Currency has had a small setback which was enough to interupt his preparation for the Bet365 and Scottish National so we've decided to finish him for the season with the weather going against us too.
We're really excited about next season for him and hope to aim him at the Grand National.
Hope this clarifies & we will update it on the blog tomorrow as the decision was only made yesterday.
Martin, Belinda & Freddie

Lacdoudal e.w. 33-1 ppow. Surprised how well he ran at Chelt, showed he's no back number there. 3rd in this last year off a higher mark. Ground won't be a problem and this race likely to cut up, can't see there being loads of runners. Likes the course.

Why is 16's madness? Fairoak Lad off to Ireland, Erics Charm not running on gd/fm according to Sherwood. I wouldn't want to be laying 16's for a standing dish like that. Probably go off single figures.

PHILIP Hobbs will have four definite runners at Punchestown next week.
Planet Of Sound runs in the Guinness Gold Cup on Wednesday; Balthazar King is due to run on Thursday; and Duke Of Lucca and Copper Bleu run on the Friday.
Fairoak Lad will join them if he does not make the cut for the bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown, for which he is 14-1 with Stan James.

Sorry - I'd thought it was always the plan to run at Punchestown as Hobbs had stated a month ago. With the owner having a few runners at Punch plus the fact he'd been entered in 2 races i assumed that was still the plan. Obviously not.

Took the 33's on the 15th expecting Lacdoudal to be about 12's when the race cut up. Didn't expect him to be 12's now when basically nothing changed to the race.

Dabo, Templer might not make the cut now and might not have the class. Like the ground though, and low weight, so wouldn't put you off. If Griffiths rides he's gonna be on a diet this week to get full claim. Like to see which jocks ride Hobbs contenders.
