Punchestowns and Fair Along came cruising to the hill and when asked to grind up it they couldn't alter their speed significantly at all. I know people don't agree but Big Bucks was powering away from them at the line and should confirm the form on revised terms whatever the ground imo. (I didn't back him at the weekend and haven't backed him for the WH.) |

Completley agree AR, hence my thread.
Looked like he had more in the locker , and although Hendo says he left some to work on with Punchy, I think BB has got more improvement in him. Has to be between BB & Punchy on the big day, both future Gold Cup horses. |

Indeed mate i didn't realise he was still 5/1 tbh, with everything now in place that looks very solid ante-post material, and those on at bigger prices have come through unscathed with a proper voucher imo B-)

I'm a bit worried tho, have got Tatenen, What-A-Friend and Masterminded in a 120/1 treble, and now Big Buck's is right in there...all this without planning to favour PN's runners one bit!! |

Not much to worry about imo, 3 of those are penalty kicks and Tatenen aint far behind ;)
The good thing is Nicholls has really yet to hit super form this season, and you would think with his stable getting stronger year on year he could have his best festival yet. |

hope you're right ;) but really agree think Hendo's novices are crackers but the others hmmm and is Pipe still training lol, yet to be convinced PN will win the CH and GC but even those ones, as with mine, are all course winners! :0

I just dont see how Big Bucks can confirm form with Punchestowns on very likely quicker ground and with an 8lb swing in weight. Hes done me massive favours in his last two starts has Big Bucks but for me Punchestowns would rate a very very strong bet to overturn the Cleeve form.

amaru for me the only time Punchestown got up the hill to win (3 attempts) he was in a class 3 off 139. He will have his most truly run race in March and for me he won't climb the hill at all well. He'll cruise to it looking imperious and then just keep on at the same pace like on Saturday. And it could be soft ground again as Cheltenham is a rain magnet!! |

yep Punchestown has a great chance still in March...this was the best result we could have hoped for though to create a very nice competitive market for the race.

Hmmm, I take on board what you are saying AR but of his three races at Cheltenham one was a novice towards the back end of the season and I think its fair to say he has improved enormously since then. Another was the one you pointed out, a handicap off 139, so cant really read too much into that one although he was awfully impressive. The third was the Cleeve which was run roughly 50 seconds slower than your average Stayers Hurdle so he had every right to be getting tired there in my view. I wouldnt say he doesnt get up the hill based on those runs. Whilst the ground can get soft at Cheltenham in March I doubt it will be anywhere near as testing as what it was on Saturday. If it was to come up as deep as that again then I would be with you in backing Big Bucks, but if it is the same ground as last season I think Punchestowns will reverse the form from the Cleeve.

perhaps chelt isnt really punchestown's track though? was well beaten at last years festival, and its not clear that he needs it quick either.

He didnt run at the Festival last season MP, it was the April meeting. I'm not saying he needs it quick, that would suit Kasbah Bliss more than anybody else, but quicker than what it was on Saturday. The same ground as last season would be just the job I think.

fair play Am, seems clear to me these 2 will be fighting to the line, kasbah too. I'm just wary of horses that run very fast without coming off the bridle, whatever the ground, as when they hit that incline they can't dig and battle to the line as well the more gritty types. Should be a cracker tho!

Given that Kasbah has yet to be seen this season, and the other two have shown what level needs to be reached to win and been prepared nicely, it makes Kasbah at 11/4 rather short imo.

Aye should definitely be a cracker AR, cant wait for March 10th for it all to begin. Is Fair Along that far away after Staurdays run aswell?? Faster ground would also be a benefit to him as he is perhaps a suspect stayer at ths level. Was going well two out in the Cleeve before tiring late on and good/good to soft would help him to keep going for longer but has a bit to find I should imagine. Interesting to hear your views on Punchestowns, not something I thought about until you mentioned it and is definitely worth bearing in mind, unfortunately we wont know the answer until the race has been run.

I think Soft ground will see BB win WH,anything better than soft will see KB Winning with Punch his main challenger,just think on decentish ground BB will get outpaced

Trouble with trying to interpret his form is there is no knowing how much he holds in reserve. Sounds daft, given his experience, but he races like a horse who is still learning. One thing though, I thought it uncharacteristic of Henderson to be so confident post race that he'd turn the tables in March. Only he knows how much he had left to work on, but I was impressed with Punchestowns and I think there might be quite a bit more to come from him. |

From the 2nd last to the line tricky dicky johnson gave fair along a terrible ride, infact everytime he sits on the horse he does, anyone remember the Arkle ride he gave the horse? Get mr flint bk on the horse i say. what was johnson doing switching fair along to the inner between the last 2 flights, he had nothing to run with.Then he lets fair along free wheel into the last hurdle :S He should of gone all out after the 2nd last flight the horse stays all day.

That Arkle is a painful memory, the false start didnt help but still a inexplicable effort from Johnson, to get beaten by M W de Slowzen even more so considering how dire that horse ran subsequently.

Punchestowns was giving him 8lbs and NH said he wouldn't like tge soft ground. Can't see why he won't reverse form with BigBucks, also have no idea how Kasbah Bliss will run.

The ground is so crucial to the outcome of this race, If it were to come up any quicker than last year I would think Kasbah would be nearly unbeatable, but any soft in it would swing things in the others favour.

was getting a fair bit of weight on Saturday imo.....also I just have it in the back of mind that Barry Geraghty was riding to instructions and went easy on Punchestowns with a view to not bottoming him before Cheltenham. |

2 x C&D winner now, improving as the days go one, Won the recognised trial.
Trainer is adamant he would have won the Hennessy (not sure myself) , and it was G/S that day. Most important PHACT of all .. he shares a paddock with the 3 best chasers in the land :p This time next year he'll have Denman tied up in the corner kicking mud in his face :^0. |
