Westmead Hawk was superb agreed. Ballyregan Bob was a clever tracker but for sheer disbelief nothing comes close to Scurlogue Champ and probably never will
|
|
By:
I had never heard of Scurlogue Champ, just watched a few youtube vids. the last half a lap he would be passing them like they were standing still. Visually a joy to watch!
|

such a question is virtually impossible to answer.....there are superstars over the years covering every distance and style but for the old tracks now forgotten there would have been some fantastic greyhounds running on various tracks make-ups....grass...peat...sand...part and part....so for the sport it is better that we have a spread of memories and watch videos of all those we can.......

Very hard to answer but my two against the field are: Ballyregan Bob and Ballinderry Moth.
Most will know the former but possibly only the older posters will recall Ballinderry Moth - a great bitch out of Walthamstow who won loads of stuff in the mid 1970's. As a very raw 16 year old I had my week's wages on her for the final of the Oaks at Harringey in November 1976. Only 8/11 (I think) but she was away and gone....OI OI! |
|
By:
i remember her son Daleys Gold.....

I remember. Moth was a blue blood, no doubt about that. BB very special though.
I thought Loyal Honcho had his moments too. ![]() |

21 I think nanny. Both Mustard and Lively Band were owned by the same man, coincidentally, a Scottish banker called Cyril Young, known on the programmes/racecards as Cyril Scotland. Very well known for his sporting support, football being high amongst his hobbies.
Lively Band won the Edinburgh Cup which was always run in August, so presumably he retrialled and requalied to race. Phenomenal pace the dog had. He took out, as you say, probably the greatest dog never to win a Derby, Shamrock Point ( I rated him higher than Myrtown, sry ) and the dopey, grovelling officials in charge then promoted the Duke of Edinburgh’s dog, Camira Flash from 4th to 3rd and thus into the final, which of course the dog won. The crowd - and they were huge in these day,s (as you already know )were not at all reticent in demonstrating, very loudly, their displeasure post-race. The following year Shamrock Point missed out again from a final spot, by the narrowest of margins, and again won the Consolation Final, again in a faster time than the winning finalist. I well remember Ger McKenna leading the dog across and, as he did, the crowd spontaneously gave him and the dog huge vocal support and applause out of pure sentiment and appreciation. It was a memorable sound and sight. |

Mine was What’s Up Boys in the National. I got inspiration for him on the Friday and got on. Bet him again on the Saturday morning as the huge punt took off.
Had never before seen a horse come to lead the race over the last then get passed again, on the run in, by the horse he’d just passed. They heard me all over the street as I triumphantly shouted him on. Then the brutal reality suggested itself and actually happened. Bindaree! And worse, one of my fav. Jocks Culloty! |
|
By:
@ The Knight.
With respect, were you the punter that had some massive golf bet on here years ago that hit 1.01 and lost? My memory deserts me |
|
By:
As a 46 near 47 year old the Dog that springs to mind has to be Westmead Hawk, if only for it's style of winning.
I don't doubt there may have been faster dogs but I've only been left mouth open mouthed and completely speechless once.....and that was The Hawk |
|
By:
once open mouthed*

I still remember the Wimblecrowd bursting into “easy. easy” when he won his second Derby. Amazing.
What must it be like to realise that you have a pup who’s shown you his absolute brilliance before you even trial him officially. Must be a special feeling. |
