The odds compilers now are useless, fattie correct what he said re top 2 and 3, some great value if you dont mind a shortie, in some of these opens, JK could beat them in a race, mind you, it could have been me, twice was offered jobs in Gibraltar doing odds back in the day

Many years ago I was an avid dog racing fan. I even spent a year or so in the early 1990's playing full time around Hackney, Hove and Walthamstow. So, nobody knows better than me than there are no good things and that dogs can easily miss the break in the most crucial races.

But twenty years ago I quit betting on greyhounds because the number of times a dog well clear on form and times, which had been flying the traps, then missed the break in a big final when heavily backed became just too high.

Hence, tonight, it was sad to see the Dog Derby favourite miss the break so badly after looking so assured in all of the prior rounds. Yes, it does happen but tonight's failure of trap 4 looks really bad for an ailing sport.

To me, Towcester looks like an unreliable track and it is plain stupid running the sport's top race somewhere where those in attendance are separated from the action by the width of an ex-horse racing track! Proves that TV money is everything but that all withstanding, tonight was just plain sad to see.  With the dogs being so far away from the crowd, it's not even like the famous 'Derby Roar' can be used an excuse.

And let me end by making it very clear...I had no financial interest in the race. I just wanted to see the top race of a sport I used to love so much go the way of the dog with the best form. It was not to be and I cannot help but feel the result is another nail in the coffin of UK greyhound racing. I hope someone sensible on here can convince me differently!

There no given right that the jolly should win derby final or any other final in that case

Them Nails going in on what we witnessed from crayford tonight every other track that’s running four dog races million sprints , dogs running every 3-4 days
I totally agree with you about towcester
Rex losing tonight just another jolly getting beat that’s it

swords rex was taken on by layers all week as there was a real belief that he could be in trouble to the bend and for that to happen he would have to either completely or partially miss the start or be joined early by dogs who put in an improved break......considering the form of the dog the prices on offer of odds against and evens were very generous prices as it looked to be a 4/6 chance on performances and draw.......i know there is a market for people laying at the evens mark because they cant lose too much should they get it wrong so i put the odds on offer down to opinion.......rex seemed to lose purchase at the lid rise which lead to the delayed pushing off into his early burst behind fast dogs......no room and no path....i thought he ran a very good race from the position he found himself in and for me it was very unfortunate but one of those things.......as mentioned in an earlier post the trainer did say the winner was a dog returning from injury having been laid out for the competition with a late decision to take his place only having a few sprint races in preparation and was a very fast dog on the improve......as his other dogs were an unbeaten machine and the track record holder it was no surprise to think of him as the third string but in fact he was significantly better than that so i would say the winner was more of a triumph for the trainer in actual training ability and for those watching a deserved winner....rather than a nail in the coffin i would say its a hats off to graham hollands team along with Gaytime Nemo who was probably the most appropriately name dog for the same day Pride celebrations..............

Great night last night. Awesome racing. Very very surprised at Rex. Moments like that make me wonder. Fixed? Fed? But it was nothing to do with the track or towcester as some people immediately refer too.

Couple of thousand at towcester last night. Protestors almost ruined it. Why were they so prominent this year compared to others? They seem to be winning. If you guys love the sport so much, as i do, there needs to be more support and a reason to go to the racing. The sport is very clique and a 'not what you know but who you know' sport. There seems to be no avenue for new young people to come to the racing. Theres no help, hard to find replays, and people get laughed at if they can't read a racecard. I fear if it carries on this way the protesting against greyhound racing will win and greyhound racing will be banned. This will all be finished. Theres only a small double figure number of people in the country that work the arses off trying to provide top quality racecards whenever possible for people like us. But there needs to be more incentive.

Not one person complained about the track last night. The track before is an old horse track so there is only a short amount of grass in between yourself and the dog track. Its not that far from the action at all. Surely thats better. If you were right next to the track these animal activists would be jumping on at every moment. And it only takes one numpty to get too excited and throw their bottle or whatever onto the track, as seen at Doncaster the other day. Towcester will possibly change the fencing so you could be on the grass a bit more. There have been talks of it. Theyre trying to be better and better every year. Support rather than slander. Racing needs it. Otherwise, banned incoming.

Ntown Clown..a spirited defence of last night and of Towcester. BUT, two points you make surely need further thought?

1/ Having a track separated by the width of a horse racing track is not ideal and trying to justify it by saying that it stops the protestors is actually giving in to the protestors! If security cannot be properly employed to stop these idiots then we are in grave trouble at all our sporting events. What next, hold a Test Match with a lat around the playing area. (The real answer is for our judiciary to bang it up these mad-minded people with some real heavy jail sentences.)

2/ The fact nobody was complaining last night is because, I rather suspect, almost none of those in attendance had ever been to White City or Wimbledon on final night. Try and imagine if the World Snooker Final was moved from Sheffield to a warehouse in Milton Keynes or somewhere else. It would take along while for Sheffield to be forgotten and the event would suffer as a whole.

But this is a wider argument about our society as a whole. Sadly, our younger generations are having more and more dross inflicted upon them and know no different, hence to them it is the norm and that is exactly how standards slip.

I am glad those there last night enjoyed the evening but, believe me, my visit to last year's final will remain my last.

I’m glad the one time a year lot enjoy it
I went on Thursday first day
That was enough for me

Watch delight in stayers race
Rd last corner just no where for dogs to go rd the bends
Even jet in last almost made a mistake going inside

I don’t think the place fit for derby circuit wise that’s my opinion
I think where go rd in circles debating it

Fattie  if anyone thinks this track is fit for purpose then they are severely deluded and have know idea what a proper and fair running track is. You rightly point out the 712 race earlier when there are only 2 dogs running on going into the second last bend  the 1 and the 3 both completely lost round the last 2 bends ! It was like a pinball machine watching them getting knocked from pillar to post . Reference the Derby  very very few dogs passed on the outside around the last 2 bends , if you took that route dogs seemed to be treading and loosing their action  . Another point if I may usually I look for anomalies from the start to the finish of the Derby how many photo finishes were there for first place ?. Can’t think of many which I think adds to the view that making up ground around the last 2 bends and the home straight was extremely difficult ie not fair hence **** track
However got the e/w 80-1 Cochise ,! Thank god for photo finish eh ,, lol

Alot of industry pros and experienced passionate heads always at Towcester.
If the track is that bad.. why hasn’t it changed? No support? No money?
Is it a poorly run place? Nobody else wants the derby at their track.. according to boothby last night.

I still have a bet or two each day on the dogs but have almost given up commenting on the state of the game as its all been said before and we have to accept that things will only get worse as described by Aladdin on another thread which mentioned 10 yes TEN two bend so called races at Towcester today. That card is a disgrace and an insult to any proper greyhound fan.

I have to admit never reckoned I say this but Towcester is ok track since the introduction of the new traps for the four bend trip

It’s much fairer start now and dogs that trap well generally trap well and dogs that are slow away generally are slow away

I think the track sand has bedded in more over the past 6 months or so and it’s easier to come from behind now

That’s one thing alot of people never comment on is the reason dogs struggle to come from behind now compared with say 20 years ago is due the sand type? The quick drying sand nowadays favours the front runners much more than the older type sand that retained much more water

Although afraid a lot of wide runners did seem to struggle around the third and four bends like normal last night

And PS I had a good bet on the winner at 9-1 as you could tell it weren’t a trap one dog and had a fair chance of leading up Cool

Can’t really see why your saying Wimbledon was not fit for derby

Though you never really said if was running surface or stadium ?

For memory at the Wimbledon the only year was major problem with the track was one year when loads of dogs in the first round ran into the inside first bend rail

This included gatimore lad - spelling ain’t right probably

Was trained by Geoff de mulder

I believe painted the outside first bend wall green and it actually seemed to work

Though I stick to my point regarding the sand, I do think in the summer it’s generally harder now to win off the pace than say 10 to 20 years ago

The thing people have to understand and accept is that Towcester is not responsible for the loss of White City, Wimbledon or Walthamstow.  And it is not going to happen.  The people I read on here just hate the place.
Moan, moan, moan about Towcester and that;s about it.  No solutions offered other than go to great surfaces/tracks who unfortunately cannot provide the facilities required.
For anyone to suggest that the track was responsible for both favs. not "doing it" last night is just laughable.
Actually it is pitiful.

solutions

Are the track needs to be re configurated on template of shelbourne
We’ve said this from dot one !
Imo you can’t have derby run around a track that not built for passing !
At crucial stages of a race, third, and fourth bend

Got more chance rd crayford last bend than towcester

The venue and ability to stage a derby they have it hands down
Other than moving rail closer to action it be spot on as spectacle
But like I said the configuration bends are wrong end off
Iron out the lids great got water on the track great

I thought Sheffield was on turn but you can pass rd that track unlike towcester
