ROMFORD has called off Friday's open-race meeting due to a revised forecast which suggested extreme heat will last well into the evening.
Ian Smyth, director of stadia for Ladbrokes Coral, explained: "The forecast has gone up again overnight and, with the travelling involved, calling off is the right thing to do on welfare grounds."
Central Park had cancelled its Friday evening meeting the previous day, but other fixtures were set to go ahead with Crayford and Hove having swapped morning and afternoon fixtures in light of the forecast.
Smyth added: "The Hove and Monmore [afternoon] forecasts look okay. Crayford will need monitoring, but the change to a morning gives it a cooler start and we will assess if temperatures rise as the meeting draws to a close."
Umbrella welfare group Greyhound Forum has welcomed the GBGB's hot weather policy, which calls for racing to be called off if temperatures exceed 33C, but says it needs to be vigorously enforced.
Forum chairman Clarissa Baldwin said: "The [hot weather] policy was very much welcomed by the Forum recognising that thermoregulation and the factors that affect it are complex and multifactorial.
"Although the ambient temperature during which dogs race is an important consideration, the exposure is short in duration and there are many other factors which contribute to a dog's thermal load including transport to the track, pre-race kennelling, excitement and anticipation as well as race time, post-race management and post-race travel. These must also be appropriately managed to safeguard dog welfare.
"To fully safeguard dog welfare, however, the policy must not only include appropriately strong and evidence-based guidelines in all relevant areas, it must also be adequately and rigorously enforced, with swift action taken and proportionate sanctions to tackle those who fail to implement the policy.
"We have been in contact with the GBGB who have assured us that the policy is being applied and will be enforced."

But fats the whole shebang is being ruled by one Thing ,and its not the Interest of Greyhounds, Why are they racing at 6pm anyway ?
If its not one thing its another ,why not look at the Weather forecast a couple of days earlier and start the Meeting later ?? How
Hard is that ?
It wont be 33 Degrees at 7.45 will it ? If there is no Aircon in the Vans or Track kennels they are not fit for purpose , Plenty of air con
in the GBGB bank of england offices ,that hundreds of thousands have been wasted on over the past few years .. Comical the Lot of it.

Well its too hot ,the main problem would be the track surface ,as stated is Poor/Biased at the best of times ,Who knows mate but blaming everything else bar what the actual problem is, does not help .The sport is in a shambolic state has been for years ,they are on about getting people to tracks starting racing at 6 pm does not help ,its not a night out , people going for a meal do not go to restaurants at 6 pm imvho .If ur going out with the Mrs for an evening wtf goes out at 5 oclock in the evening to get somewhere ? its Stupid ,but as it stands its that it or nothing .
Its very sad to see tracks going by the wayside , but more will follow

If the meeting started at 7.45 would be no problems with heat But of course its
down to contracts that we have these silly start times
I think the main reason it was called off was the Track is biased at the best of times
Just my opinion, and racing may have been dangerous .At a decent track In any normal circumstances every one knew it was going top be very hot, a late
start would have been announced 2 days before , but its not about actual greyhound racing
anymore its all about contracts ,and quickly glossing over any real Issues .
This 6 pm caper has destroyed the sport regarding entertainment ,People going for a Night out do not expect to be back on the street at 9.15 and having to leave at 5 pm to get to the track its not happening .
Sport is being bled dry .
Winj , Nothing to do with Desperate Betting Excuse was problems travelling ETC All vans should have AC if not why not ?If the meeting started at 7.45 would be no problems with heat But of course its down to contracts that we have these silly start
It was not that long ago people were leaving tracks in the early hours of the Morning .
How many people are in these betting shops between 6 and 9 , No one imo ,theres enough bags
racing , and surely 90 % of betting on dogs is online anyway .
