Never left a track early, I like how different they can be.  For what I though were sh1tholes though, take your pick. Hull or Peterborough.

Catford was my second home for many years, I still miss the place. Wisbech was probably the scruffiest track I've ever been to but I still had a good time there having said that.

I have visited nearly 50 tracks since I started in the sixties. I have enjoyed every one of them, particularly the long lost London tracks. If I had to choose a least favourite it would be the current Crayford track.

Only went Rye House once, about 1980 ish, had it right off with one of Eric Vose dogs, Racing Nig, can honestly say enjoyed going to every track ive been.

Wimbledon when they moved it over to the other side. Broke my heart when I went for the first time, was told it was horrific but turned out to be even worse then everyone was saying!

The other one I hated was Harold's Cross. Never seen so much carnage at the first bend in all my life when I went there for the first round of the Puppy Derby the night before the Derby Final at Shelbourne. Have been to many Irish Derby finals over the years but never again to Harold's Cross. Was terrible seeing those young dogs put on the floor, smash into each other race after race

I’d take standing knee deep
In piss at wimbo
Over that shameful derby at Notts wouldn’t go back there again

Again befor racing !!

Wisbech worst for me.

Rye House had its problems - leaves all over the track in the Autumn, crap viewing - especially if you were by the line on the other side of the "restaurant" and the fog coming off the canal. But I enjoyed the Sunday night Open racing

Norton Canes was a permit track but held some good opens

As basic as you could dream of. The watering system was a long hosepipe all round the track with holes punched in it, talk about budget facilities but any racing is better than none

Harringay Back in the Day

The stadium also had a reputation of crowd disturbances, when one incident witnessing six fire engines dispersing rioters, after they had set fire to the tracks tractor, and also smashed track lighting and windows, all because the judges disqualified a winning dog   Laugh Pmsfl

Good stuff casemoney and I liked the 1963 poster "Clapton the home of the champions" after  all those big races won by Clapton dogs.
One correction as the standard distance had long changed from 550 to 575 yards.

This is also an interesting piece about Clapton by Darrell Williams of all people.

As a young lad I used to walk the 2 dog at Donnie when it was a flapper paid £2 a night what great great days I really do miss it sound of the hare running still resonates and the Mansfield beer and believe it or not the cheese toasties. Xmas meeting was so good so special. Pint in the Grove pint in the Yorkie at the track we supped the slops impressionable youth. That is before racing began. I can tell you some stories. Had a flash new 3 litre Capri ghia that shifted. Smoked King Edwards like Bennies fallen off the back of something. Remember little Lennie & co and Dibb Dibb Dibb the bookmaker and the great Terry Mills he had a dog called Quick Jump if I remember rightly if you could only turn back the clock. Open nights were just the very best. Learnt to drive in a Wolsey at the back. Worked in the kennels for a short time. Long time ago now. Wind up military phone. Still like the flappers something quite special about them. Highgate and Askern still full of intrigue wonderful places is Mr D still bookmaking? Remember taking a couple of really top class dogs to Cleethorpes with my good friend Martin now that is the back of beyond both won what a night still hazy. Kinsley never did it for me or Highgate. Martin had a dog called Miss Power off 10 in the first out of season he told me borrow as much as you can max your cards out then they backed another ours before we got on went out to 5/2 won easily sat outside house well oiled in la la land lost my voice won over 1800.00 quid some money then. Where did it all go wrong? Something very special about greyhound racing. I reminisce.
