I’m trying to enjoy it, but it’s just not pretty viewing is it? As Deptford observed, dogs waiting around, the checking at that 3rd bend, and the veering to the left as they come down the home straight and approach the winning line (bit like the Epsom camber).
40 years ago I was watching Sarah’s Bunny, Desert Pilot et al at my first Derby Final. Dogs striding out on a luscious green turf, atmosphere like nothing I’d experienced before and racing that was a joy to watch.  Anyone own a time capsule?

My memory is letting me down. 1979 was my second Derby as Lacca Champion was my first a year earlier. Nanny, you’re bringing a tear to my eye with the mention of bowler hats and brass bands. Don’t forget the electronic tote board and all the paraders in their white coats. 
Finally, and I don’t have any stats to back this up and I may well be looking through rose tinted glasses, but, from what I recall, relatively trouble free races.
