loved the old hackney
only went about 20 times in total
hated the new hackney did my b0ll0cks a few times

went with a mate to the new hackney once / was doing my conkers
he managed to drag me out of stadium to carpark , but I still had a carpet on me
and ended up going back in
needless to say 1 more bet later id lost that too

top class dog there was summer story must have been 40 years ago old hackney
my friend brought a greyhound at hackney sales think it must have been 50 years ago 28 guineas took it to hendon greyhounds was nearly top class trained by henry coalbrooke
I was there one windy afternoon when someone threw what looked like a Parka coat at the dogs as they came into the home straight, the wind caught the coat and it missed them. The red light came on immediately after the race finished but after a while the green light was shown and the result stood. The bloke who threw the coat jumped over a wall and got away.
There was a spate of race interference going on at different tracks at that time.

My Saturdays used to consist of Hackney in the morning, Palace if they were home in the afternoon and Catford in the evening. Happy days indeed 
Saturday morning at Hackney on the No30 bus from St Pancras with 11.00 start,the place was a veritable sun trap always great weather.
Books were Eddy Selby next to the phone,Hutchinson,Doug Tyler ,and don't remember the others.
Henry Colebrook,Annets,Lionel Maxen were main trainers.
Scunthorpe,Sloop John B,Buxom Joe are a few dogs I remember.
Then off to Harringay for the 2.08 start,then across to White City for 7.30,and finally home to Bedford.

On Saturday's I also did Hackney and Harringay but of course Clapton at night. Hectic times.
I remember we used to be 7 or 8 evry year for the derby. Hackney saturday morning always my highlight. Was the first time the phrase was ever used john power ( nookie bear ) as we used to call him as he bore great resemblance to roger de coursey jumped of the stool drew a chalk line in front of his pitch n said if any of u edinburgh mafia cross this line u av to bet me. The name stuck.
it was nice to see dennis tuttlebee again in the film...…..i remember standing where the crowd were standing......pepper running around scribbling on race cards.....the rush to have a bet with the crowds when a dog lengthened in price....hundreds of black taxis in the car parks.....especially tuesday and thursday afternoons.....i would still be going if it was there...….
I used to like Tuttlebee . Always had a chat with him at Crayford when I had dogs there . Had a lot of time for Pepper . A proper character and was always at Rye House until its closure...
Had to be 1 o the biggest characters in the game pepper.
i remember asking dennis for a 1000/160 a dog at Crayford and he got a bit confused and instead of lowering the winnings he lowered the stake and said you can have 1000/140......having the privilege with all the bookmakers of calling the bet and settling after.....i was off before he must have realised his mistake......the dog was beat and i tried to pay 160 but being a gentleman he only took the 140.....liked him and doris….both gone now....so is pepper...

i went to greyhound tracks all around london but it was one particular race that got me really hooked on gambling and it was at hackney wick my uncle worked at the times newspaper and told me a dog would win on this sat morning so my uncle who lived in essex at the time picked me up and over we went the dog was trained buy newman i had 600 pound on it which was my savings and it won i thought this was easy

I would have thought you could remember the dogs name doc. I can recall dogs names that did me a turn from the early 60s so how sad am I?
One I recall from Hackney was given to me by a kennel hand who had no interest at all in the game but was a mate of mine and knew they had got dog the ready it was called Betjohns Jumbo and won at 5/2 in 1965 approx.

Backing special addition To win the William Hill Lead 33s in two 12s
I used to do a bit of business in the photo finishes for a little while. Someone in the booth would perhaps suggest to me what had won a little while before the announcement was made over the tannoy. Managed to get a £400/600 in the photo one Saturday Morning, when I only had a score on me. Didn't back too many losers with that little system.
Once saw someone throw a Welsh Dresser on at the 3rd bend of a 523 graded which landed on the hare rail and disintegrated giving out a huge banging noise.
Seems not to affect the race and the perpetrator scurried off through a gap in the fence.
The green light was eventually put up and there were some happy bookies that afternoon.
Gamble not landed and race not void.

.....your uncle was Don Crane....he was a proof reader I was a copy reader and worked with him at The Times newspaper. I didnt work regularly with him and didnt realise he was such a punter. That could have been one of 2 dogs.....either Simple Simon or Mickees Slave. I would have been about 23 at the time. I used to arrange my shifts around the Hackney meetings and if I couldnt swap shifts I used to go sick...........those were the days!!!

the best thing about going a dogs when young was getting the coach to the wick or the coach to harringay and listening to all the old boys talking about the dogs when i went harringay i used to sit with 3 blokes all in their 70s up on the top of the stand the stories they used to tell about going to the dogs after the war were fantastic shame was no one around who could have taped them how i missed them days

The name rings a bell but can't just recall it at the moment, irishone.
Someone posted a photograph of the track, taken from about the third bend looking back to where the big tote board was, probably 2 or 3 years after closure.
Looking very sorry but also like it could be resurrected at any time with the track still in tact.

After World War II Hendon Greyhound Stadium and Hackney Wick merged to become the Hackney and Hendon Greyhounds Ltd company. The resident kennels featured six ranges with each able to house up to fifty greyhounds, paddocks sat next to each range with cooking facilities and a veterinary surgeon on site. The kennel fees were 17s 6d for each greyhound.[3]
In the early 1950s Mr S Pay became the Racing Manager after Fred Whitehead was promoted to Director of Racing for both Hackney and Hendon. Pay was later replaced by Hendon Racing Manager D G Lewis before Michael Marksbecame Racing Manager for three decades until the day the stadium closed. The stadium offered eight buffet and licensed bars during racing held on Thursday and Saturday nights at 7.45pm. The circuit had a circumference of 472 yards and the greyhounds raced behind an 'Outside Sumner' hare system. Trainers in the 1960s included Annetts, Reg Bosley, Brown, Colebrooke, Cox, Paddy Gordon, Hedley and Lionel Maxen.[4]
In the 1970s Mr G.Crookbank the tracks chief electrician had invented photoelectric timing gear that would revolutionise the sport. Hand timing would become a thing of the past after Crookbank came up with the idea that a greyhound’s race time could be recorded electronically. The invention known as 'Automatic Ray Timing' would remain as the timing method until the advent of modern computer timing. The Hackney sales became a major feature of business throughout the year, these sales became a prominent way for buying and selling greyhounds in London.[5]
In 1969 Park Royal Stadium and New Cross Stadium both closed resulting in the Bookmakers Afternoon Greyhound Service (BAGS) being switched to Hendon and Hackney, the racing image of Hackney would change forever as it became the number one BAGS track. Afternoon meetings were introduced and eventually there would be no evening meetings at the track with the Saturday matinee BAGS replacing the Saturday night.[5]
In 1970 businessman George Walker, brother of boxing champion Billy Walker arranged a reverse takeover of Hackney and Hendon Greyhounds Stadium Ltd. This meant his private company bought a public company and the new merger resulted in a new company called Brent Walker. This resulted in the end for the Hendon Greyhound Stadium because it was sold to make way for the UK’s first stand-alone shopping centre on the site that would soon be known as the Brent Cross shopping centre.[5]
It was not until the closure of sister track Hendon that Hackney Wick hosted a competition of note. The Guineas long associated with Park Royal had switched to Hendon in 1969 which in turn now found its way to Hackney. Three years later 'The Lead' was introduced and would also become a valuable addition to the calendar.[5] In 1976 local hound Westmead Champ trained by Pam Heasman reached the final of the English Greyhound Derby and was voted Greyhound of the Year.[6]
Hackney fell out with the NGRC in 1987 when the governing body announced that they would charge £300 to a track staging a BAGS meeting covered by Satellite Information Services (S.I.S) plus ten percent of the tracks BAGS fees. Hackney refused and Ladbrokes took legal advice over the situation but all BAGS tracks would eventually pay a fee to the NGRC. Another race called the Lincoln was hosted by Hackney from 1986 and in 1988 Minnies Siren trained by Terry Duggan won the BBC Television Trophy. Brent Walker bought William Hill/Mecca from Grand Metropolitan in 1989 and one year later leading trainer John 'Ginger' McGee Sr. joined the track.[7]

Of that list I remeber Wild Surprise winning an 888 metre open race at Catford @ 16/1, I had a score on with Humphries and Middleton Panel was a 4/9 poke and Wild Suprise got up close home.
The curse of Peppers rolled up Sporting Life tapping on a horse during a race on the TV.........thats the winner! Sure that 50% of them fell at the next fence!

Great track Hackney,cut my teeth on dogs here on Wednesday afternoons (?) and Harringay (Friday nights ?) when I was supposed to be at the Northern Poly on Holloway Road from 1968. Loved the buzz and atmosphere there.
Harringay was Fridays and Hackney would have been Thursday afternoons in the 60s.

Hola Bill, I'm really well mate as is my brother Christian. We still have a place in G.A. and I usually go 3 or 4 times a year for some sunshine. It's not the same as it used to be as so many of my workmates have had to come back to the U.K. as there is no work out there and hasn't been for quite a few years. I'm out there in March (Cheltenham week) and then probably in June when it warms up and flights are very cheap, about £70 return from Gatwick so can't say fairer than that mate.

What a wonderful place Hackney was. The fact it was such a run-down gaff made it all the better, adding to the atmosphere.

I could go on and on about Hackney and Walthamstow but it makes me so sad to do so.
Suffice to say, I'm 58 now and so much is soulless and bland compared to my days at the east London dog tracks.
Slippy is spot on, as well, about the fry-up breakfasts. Myself and another guy used to bet with each other about what bit of the meal lil would drop a bit of ash on!
I also remember wandering into part of the tea bar one day and being barred entry by a beefy looking guy. Someone else told me that, about every six weeks or so, the Sweeney used to square up with their villains there and nobody went in while that went on. Don't know the truth in that but it would not surprise!
On Saturday mornings, if I wasn't having a bet in the first race, I'd stand on the small hill at the first bend and I'd swear you could hear the hare mechanism change tone across at the third bend as the dogs approached. It sounded like the hare was being slowed but I never did know!
Priceless and happy days and I shall be boring everyone at Southwell this afternoon with some memories of the Wick and the Stow now!!

You mention the East London tracks Knight but did you ever go the best one Clapton?
