Fantastic evening.....plenty of food and drink , great company and all of the characters turning up for the pinnacle of greyhound racing . Remember standing in a filthy derelict venue the year before and could't wait to get out of the gaff . Can't really fault Towcester , just wish it had been dropped in London .

I went last night for the first time as it's The Derby Final and I haven't missed one for 22 years with low expectations after reading and hearing so many negative things about the place and I have to say I was very impressed by a lot of things.

The viewing is actually much better then I imagined as on tv the track looks so far away from the stands but in reality you are a lot closer and get a great view of the whole track and can see exactly how the races pan out and when you watch the replays your first judgement of what happened in the race live is pretty accurate. The setting around the track is also stunning and the backdrop of the Towcester countryside almost Cheltenham like in its beauty.

Despite the large crowds it never felt uncomfortable and getting a drink and going to the toilet was a quick and painless exercise.

The track itself is quite clearly a shambles however. Some amazing front running performances from Wildcat, Bluebird and Bruisers and flying finishes from Calico Ranger and Minx in the Champion Hurdle were mixed in with some completely baffling runs from Cloran Paddy and Tyrur Shay who in my opinion would have won easily at any other track in the country from the positions they were both in. I still can't believe Shay hasn't won the Derby and with no offence intented to connections of the dog we are left with a winner like Astute Missile!

I also like many others didn't like the 8 dog races or the fact the Derby was run in daylight.

For anyone that hasn't been it's a great place to go and watch dog racing and I will definitely go again next year. Just a huge shame about the track unfortunately

wish somebody would re-post these negative comments that have been put up about towcester

to my knowledge nobody has posted any criticism of it other than criticism that is running track-related

its like saying I went to the tennis @ wimbledon sat in the royal box had the best strawberries and cream I've ever had, just a shame the lawn wasn't mowed properly and the net had a hole in it

i watched on the youtube and the only thing was the sound difference but that can be sorted, the presentation was second to none and a special thanks for star sports for having the guts to sponsor the race and all the staff at the track, never backed the derby winner but it was still a great event with all the camera work was great, i look forward to next year well done to all the people that made it happen.

I read someone above would of had the derby back at Wimbledon in a heart beat. WOW!! Last night was different class. Yes everyone should be allowed around the track and something must be done to help the side runner. But as the first derby at a new track I will still give it 10/10

Wimbledon was doing more damage to Greyhound racing than positives. I think everyone who went last night will go again next year.

Used to be a hard sell to my mates year after year at Wimbledon. Next year ill have a bus of us coming up!!
Report stowking July 2, 2017 10:42 PM BST
Would say would of been 8/10 if not for Slick Sebastian in last :-) at 12/1 phewwww

if that's the future of the game ......... the game is fecked.

the noble lord is firing his dosh at a field in the middle of nowhere , they aint how greyhound racing grew at the start.  it grew because it gained overwhelming popularity in the cities.

the u k is turning muslim, but instead of going on an annual trek to mecca ...... you poor feckers are left with an annual trek to towcester for the derby.... what surprised me most was the ethic masses in the cities of manchester and birmingham and the lack of ethnic masses at towcester , thats probably another major reason why the game over there is fecked.

Report Ravage Again July 3, 2017 7:57 PM BST
About that thinks 8 dog racing will keep dog racing alive in England is as mad as a hatter and loopy as fook

People in England hate 8 dog racing

Turnover in the bookies what little left drops dramatically

Maybe all these 8 dog races can be beaming over to the assign markets and make tons of cash

But that's totally wrong for English viewers time wise

So you need two sets of dogs and loads more trainers etc to run 8 dog races for our Asian friends and 6 dog races for us uk ers

You need two sets of kennel hands whoes going to work at them stupid times for low wages

It ain't gonna happen
Report wondersobright July 3, 2017 8:44 PM BST
8 dog racing on saturday mornings has become well established now

like I said on the other threads, wads and wads of cash must be streaming in from the enormous foreign markets

must be worth it surely with the only downside being a bit of incovenience to a few little englanders

I echo all the positive comments on the thread.

I thought the balance of racing was perfect and the 3 8 dog races fitted perfectly into
the evening. In one a v fast 4 bend dog made all, in the marathon the winner came from last and in the 686m there were about 18 in the photo - great stuff.

Best atmosphere at a track in UK or Ireland I have been to in 20 years.

Ps. If Towcester don't get a lucrative overseas media rights deal then we will lose it and Greyhound racing in this country will continue its steady decline into oblivion.
Report Captain carnage July 4, 2017 1:00 AM BST
I would also like 1) A later Derby final off time if possible
2) I have no issues with the distance between the stands and the track like 98% of people who have actually been but why not let the crowd onto the grass between the home straight and front of the track?
3) Move the traps forward 5-10 metres.

The Dorando Marathon with 8 runners most of whom didn't stay was reduced to a farce and the lack of liquidity for that race on here compared to the other races was alarming. As for the 686m race with your "18 in the photo" more or less speaks for itself.
Like all the other critics on here we badly want Towcester to succeed and are delighted with the excellent facilities provided especially the online Towcester TV but cannot ignore the track itself with all it's obvious shortcomings. We do Towcester or Greyhound Racing no favours by pretending all is wonderful and beyond criticism.
Report Captain carnage July 4, 2017 1:17 PM BST
I agree, and just about everyone with a brain know there are elements of the track that could be improved.

However, criticism of the 8 dog races baffles me and seems bizarre to be honest.

The dorando was a cracking race with a young, progressive stayer at 2/1 showing she will be a new marathon star.
She got up in a thrilling finish to beat an established marathon dog at 4/1 in 2nd. The 2nd best marathon dog of recent times was
just over a length away in 4th.

I know as a punter of many decades experience I wont every race to be won by 14L by the dog I have backed but the 686m 8 dogger was
surely what draws people to the sport. I lost my bet in the race but was compelled by the late turn around and me and my pals simply said `wow'.

Variety is the spice of life.

Look at todays bags cards. Full of repetitive 6 dog graded sludge over 480m.

Do you not think that is partly why 70% of the people I see in betting shops now are only intereted in fruit machines.
At least there is some variety of things happening on them!

Bring on 8 dog races, 6 dog races, match races, hurdles, stayers, marathons, sprints, bitches, seniors, puppies, british bred.

Thats what would bring me back to the track and not at home in my dungeon clicking betfair and watching  the same dull dross.
Report sparrow July 4, 2017 1:34 PM BST
I agree wholeheartedly about the 2 and 4 bend dross being churned out every day and the need for more variety but 8 dog racing is a proven failure in this country.
When I started watching the sport it would be 8 race cards with plenty of staying races and no 2 bend races at all. These would be graded and people attended in their thousands and I don't think they would have put up with this 13 or 14 four bend rubbish which is now served up.
Report Captain carnage July 4, 2017 1:54 PM BST
Not sure how old you are sparrow but to be fair 12-14 race cards with 15 minute gaps are what keeps peoples attention and everyone wants turnover. How people tolerate 35 minute gaps at the horses is insane!

Everyone is different. I way prefer to watch and bet on sprints than 6-8 bend races but I know I am in  a minority. For me the essence of greyhound racing is pure speed and early zip. But lets a bit of everything.
Report Captain carnage July 4, 2017 1:54 PM BST

Report garryc July 4, 2017 2:03 PM BST
i think everyone has their own ideas of what they want from greyhound racing and no 2 people are the same, for me i dont bet on sprints but love 6 bend racing and they should have a couple of staying races per meeting to go with the standard 4 bend racing,
Report sparrow July 4, 2017 2:12 PM BST
Captain, I started backing dogs in the early 60s but would also watch in the 50s when my father clerked at White City. We still had 15 minute breaks then and the meeting would be over in a few hours. With so little action in the ring nowadays 15 minutes seems far too long!!
Report irishone July 7, 2017 10:36 AM BST
rpgtv 's 7/8 minute gap seems about right in terms of betting on here
but with a bookmaker ?
forget it ......
by the time you get knocked back, ring up, complain, get offered lower odds for a lesser amount you need the full 15 minutes
