Going to the Dogs
Britain at the Bookies Episode 3 of 3 Friday night at Romford dogs is not what it used to be. For independent bookie Doug Tyler, takings are down as more and more punters are betting online. Meanwhile, on the Britwell Estate in Slough, betting giants Coral are opening a brand new shop. Although the high street is a competitive world and 30 shops closed last year, Coral plan to open 40 new ones in locations that promise to be more profitable, like the Britwell. The last episode of Britain at the Bookies explores how we arrived at our 24/7 betting culture, and what the future holds for our love affair with gambling. Coral's expansion plans aren't without critics. When the team tries to open a new branch in Hayes, Middlesex, near a YMCA, local opposition rallies against the plan. Meanwhile, in Slough, the shop on the Britwell Estate opens its doors, and we see customers like Terry struggle to control their gambling. He is drawn to the fixed odds betting terminals and their high stakes and high payouts. As we see him gamble thousands and get more and more agitated, manageress Julie decides enough is enough and bars him from the shop for his behaviour. Will it give Terry the wake-up call he needs to control his gambling? As political pressure about the dangers of gambling mounts, the industry decides to get its own house in order. The big four, including Coral, launch their 'Gamble Aware Week' and make responsible gambling posters more prominent in their marketing. But as we meet lifetime gamblers like Mitch and Roy and hear of their struggles with addiction, can any amount of self-regulation be enough to safeguard the customers? Can we see Danny in action after he has gone up first for a comp outright ![]() |

wonders i love how to insult people intelligence when they say the area needs a coral. plus at the end of the programme when the new shop manager goes against everything they signed up for in not giving away free bets etc... im sure the gambling commission will be looking into it

What the show clearly demonstrated was just how clueless the majority of betting shop punters are. It was staggering to hear punters actually saying they open the Racing Post in the morning and look at the horse races to see if something "popped out" to them! The £1 clown obviously bet like Woody with half the field for a pound after declaring a small profit following 18/1 and 20/1 winners. The living dead who feed the machines are not capable of selective thought and just hope fairy dust has been dropped on them when they start. The tattooed man believed evens was being greedy! Corals and I'm sure all others were shown as encouraging these type of punters by whatever means such as free bets, free drinks and a comfy chair for the afternoon. I can see why the judges cant get on, they must stand out like they are painted red, who wants that business when the mugs are so plentiful. Mitch summed it up best in the whole series when he said "if you need a few quid fast the best way of getting it is having a bet" and while the underbelly of society need a few quid the benefits exchange (betting shops)will thrive and while people who have a few quid but no ideas are doing money regularly the PR men will keep inviting them to functions. It looks a sad world for those trapped.
