Having completed their three-year term as sponsors of the Irish Derby last September, bookmaking firm Ladbrokes have resumed their previous sponsorship of the Ladbrokes 600 which is due to commence at Shelbourne Park next week.

The 36 dog event will have a winner’s prize of €20,000 out of a total prize fund of €36,000. Ladbrokes previously sponsored the 600 from 2003 to 2009 prior to moving over as Derby sponsors. Their return to the 600 is in conjunction with the 50th Anniversary of the first running of this great competition.

It was originally run back in 1964 when it was the first major event sponsored in Ireland. It was known as the Guinness 600 for many years and became one of the prime events in the greyhound calendar. The first winner was Cranog Bet and the roll of honour is chock full of tracking legends.

A further extension of the Ladbrokes sponsorship is that all four rounds of the competition will be shown live in the Ladbrokes offices countrywide.

IGB CEO Adrian Neilan warmly welcomed Ladbrokes’ return to the competition as he said:

"Given Ladbrokes long association with the 600 event, we are delighted that they have chosen once again to sponsor this classic event.  Ladbrokes can now boast 10 years continuous sponsorship with Shelbourne Park Greyhound Stadium demonstrating their continued commitment to the Irish Greyhound Racing Industry. This will no doubt produce some fantastic racing over the 4 week period in April and May and we look forward to celebrating the victorious winner on the final night."

Speaking on behalf of Ladbrokes, Jackie Murphy, Head of Operations, said: “Ladbrokes has a great heritage with greyhound racing and in fact introduced extended opening hours to facilitate greyhound betting back in the sixties. We’re pleased to still be assisting the promotion of the sport which will now see  all four nights of the Ladbrokes 600 series broadcast live throughout our Irish estate. It’s hard to believe we’ve now had a decade long association with Shelbourne Park but times flies when you’re having fun and it’s always a pleasure to work with Ireland’s premier track”.

Since Ladbrokes sponsored the 600 last in 2009 it has been supported by Hegarty Bookmakers and then last year Betfair took over. Entries for the event will close on Tuesday at noon.

PF, you said the news about Sparta Maestro after the race was better than last week. Can I ask what you have heard or does it just relate to the comment on talking dogs that he was 'sound' after the race and would go the vet Monday?

Sparta Maestro yesterday got a clean bill of health and is a definite runner in Saturday’s Ladbrokes 600 at Shelbourne Park.
Phil Gough reported that the dog was in superb form. “He came out of Saturday’s race better than any other race since the early rounds of the St Leger and hopefully he will be able to do himself justice on Saturday night”

I was crazy choosing Sparta, after he finished sore, the previous week. My 2nd choice was Ringtown at 9/2. It would have paid 11k.

Snowy didn't come away from that horrid box in round 1 so wonder how he will come away this week, either way they're coming together from boxes i'd say. If Snowy misses it he will lose out when Sugar Ray barges his way to the rail but if he is better away then Sugar Ray would be better off missing it altogether otherwise he will be the one losing out.

Tyrur Sugar Ray @ 7/4 + Abbeyville Tipp @ 8/1 [saver]

Think both are a bit big and happy to play at them prices.

As ever with Sugar Ray the run up is the crucial part of the race for him but i'm not convinced Ringtown Snowy will come away from the inside as he did from 4 last week and if he comes away like in round 1 and Sugar Ray starts like last week he will get the rails straight away and then he wins. Even if Snowy does come away it may not be bad for Sugar Ray if he's behind him and can follow him up and once getting a run around the opening bends he would still have a huge chance of back running him.

Abbeyville Tipp needs to lead around to win here so needs his best start of the competition but if getting it and leading around he will take some beating, he is one of them dogs that's so hard to pass when they get out in front and he just keeps finding a bit more.

Report p_r_e_m_i_e_r__f_a_n_t_a_s_y May 4, 2013 1:11 PM BST
Raggletaggle Rio is a ponce who doesn't drive the bend at all in my opinion, he'd want to be clear to go around and then he doesn't finish the race out strong enough either in my opinion.

I was going to take on Sparta Maestro tonight but wanted a bit bigger on Highview Beauty. I actually think Sparta Maestro will lead run up and it's possible he could still lead into the back and then i think he'd win but how he runs the bends will be interesting. Highview Beauty has a brilliant draw.

Would not be sure that 1 is ideal for Airlie Dazzler as he is not a paint licker by any means and is more inside-middle. However Speed Agreed certainly does not look like an inside seed based on any of his runs that I have watched around Clonmel, Tralee etc.

Looks like Dazzler should get plenty of room as 2 is not a flyer from the traps either and 3 takes a few strides to get going and stays middle.

Not disputing that Fatty. Only said Highview was quickest so in a clean final, you would expect a close enough finish? Personally think Sugar Ray did well to bide his time coming through last night. Wouldnt have been the first time a dog got stopped rushing passing. Think he's 4/6 now and wouldnt argue with that.

Might have gone but would have been very disappointed if next Saturday's card is anything like the Easter Cup programme

Slip The Genie has an absolute brilliant draw, it really is a stunning draw but it still doesn't make me want to bet her @ 8/1 as i don't think she is running well enough.

Highview Beauty is in great form but has an absolute pig of a draw and makes absolutely no appeal to me @ 6/1. She can trap well but she is limited to the corner and i can see her turning 5th here and can't see her winning then.

Rallying Ri needs a miracle, should be double the price.

Tyrur Sugar Ray is a real worthy favourite and will take a massive amount of beating, if he does everything right he wins. Trap 1 is not thought of as the best trap from the back boxes and Sugar Ray is not always great at traps so there is a danger Amelia could beat him at boxes and take the rails away from him, if doing so something may get away. I made him a 4/5 shot to 100% so think the books have him priced pretty much as i'd expect.

I think Ringtown Snowy @ 6/1 and Tyrur Amelia @ 14/1 are overpriced in the final.

Ringtown Snowy is better from the middle in my opinion and once trapping level will lead around in the final. In the semi final i felt he was messing about between the last 2 bends when he hit the front before going on again when Sugar Ray went past. However when he goes around in front and goes clear he is pretty diffucult to pick up, added to that if Sugar Ray don't get loose early Snowy could have flown.

Tyrur Amelia i thought showed good pace up in the semi after taking a bump early and then lost her position after being impeded on the bend, she also ran well down the back before checking on the 3rd. If she can lead up Sugar Ray [she will have no problem leading Rallying Ri] on the rails i think she actually has a chance, she would probably need Snowy to not go clear as well but if Snowy is not good at boxes Highview Beauty could possibly take his ground [although i think it's unlikely]. Anyway on the draw i think she is overpriced, please god she don't win though as i really should have got off my arse and went and took the 66s at the start Cry.

Hopefully it's a cracking final, outright the comp has been a fkin disaster [heats have been very good though] and my only saving grace at the moment is a Sugar Ray win which would see me finish level on the outright bets, i've limited the damage on the rest [took my medicine or chickened out like a little bitch - take your pick] so will be happy to see the back of it this year.

Report BrayNed May 9, 2013 7:29 PM BST
Woody, how can you say "none of the rest of them are up to it". Sugar Ray is a worthy favourite but it is not a penalty kick. When he goes BOOOM he wins but otherwise he has to muck aroud with the plebs. Snowy and Amelia have won impressively in the comp and Snowy shared the Cesarwitch with an unbeated record. Your selection has been very impressive too but if you are "splitting hairs" then it does come down to price otherwise you might as well back them all.

I am not saying your selection is wrong. Just doen't agree with your supporting arguement.
Report p_r_e_m_i_e_r__f_a_n_t_a_s_y May 9, 2013 7:43 PM BST
i could easily get this as wrong as i did the Gold Cup final [that wasn't helped by Isabels looking totally crippled in that], i just don't see how she gets across as i don't think she has enough to the corner and expect 3 or 4 in front of her at the bend thus make her bigger than 6s.

i really think Snowy has an absolutely massive chance in this, i'm sure Henno will get him more focused this week
Report woodmanchester May 9, 2013 7:55 PM BST
Fair enough PF. You may say i'm nuts and betting for betting sake but it's just a little interest in a big final with outside chance to recoup some losses. Just thought Snowy had every chance against Ray in semis and the only one who may pose a threat faster semi winner Highview. Like you say could be crowded though, leaving it on a plate for strong Ray, imo. Let's agree to let the dogs do the talking, then we will know for sure.

That is not to take away from TSR, he was going to catch him regardless imo

After the 600 final and Oaks semis, sweet on the chances of well-travelled Airforce Diva. She achieved a creditable 2 from 5 record in England and although didnt fancy her to beat Borna Gem last time, there were things to like about her Irish comeback. A classy bitch, she will surely prove too much of a handful for tonight's rivals

Ian tipped Amelia @ 66s in the Star i think it was Castno but didn't back him [i think he said] like some other fool on here Sad not sure what or if Michael tipped anything

I think you'll get prices like this on course tonight Woody at some stage

4/5
7/1
50/1
4/1
6/1
7/1

As from what price she'd be from a better draw i can't answer as it would depend where others where drawn too

Like the card tonight and have played a few

Race 1 - Cadence @ 11/2 really liked the look of her Tralee run and hope she can get first run at Fridays Twirl who will probably lead.

Race 4 - Paradise Silva @ 8/1 (nap) he is going to take off some night soon Grin walked out last week but showed good enough pace up and then flew down the back. Obviously Sooty is the one to beat but if Silva can come away better [i'd love him to break level] i think he has a serious chance as he can lead those on the inside and with racing room he can take off down the back. Think the price is absolutely massive.

Race 5 - Brenval Star @ 5/1 thought she ran well enough last week in a hot race, thought she showed plenty of pace, i wonder would 2 and 3 be better the other way around and i think Brenval Star has the beating of those outside her to the corner, clearing Rumble Titan is the key [he is a joke price @ 5/4 imo] but i think she's big @ 5s.

Race 6 - Riverside Cashen @ 4/1 think he is the most likely to lead around and while he struggles to get home they're hardly string runners in this. He was unlucky not to go around last week and once he got the trouble that was the end of him, Blue Smoke is rightly fav imo but can he come from behhind Cashen as i think he will have too.

Race 8 - Skywalker Mandy @ 5/1 i had made Leeview Lady fav ahead of Annaleen and think Leeview is a fair price but think the best drawn bitch is big @ 5s. I don't think she is fast enough to win in a clean run race [and may have some of her own ideas] but there must be a chance of trouble on the inside here. Leeview Lady will surely edge middle again and with Annaleen in there they could come together run up, in 5 you have Lucy who wants rails so will be going left leaving Mandy with the outside to herself.

PF- a friend of mine was chatting to Buckley's son last week, Paradise Silva is an aeroplane but is still green as grass, they expect him to be some dog come the summer. His back straight pace was awesome last week, agree he is huge at that price. I'm all over Gunie Basil in the 3rd too, decent punting card down there. Going to hit Slatts or the Bath for the Cup final first
Report p_r_e_m_i_e_r__f_a_n_t_a_s_y May 11, 2013 1:10 PM BST
Aye they think the world of him, would rather him the other side of the 1 dog to be honest but the price makes up for that.

I wonder what reserve will go in the 3rd, the 5 had a great draw but then she did last week too i thought Laugh if Basil turns handy they'll struggle to hold him, actually thought he'd a chance in the Produce Stakes

Will miss the cup final Plain probably good for me though as i can't watch without a bet and let's just say i'm not a frequent winner on football

Have you seen the match bet Laddies have put up, Ringtown Snowy 10/11 v Highview 10/11. I got a bit of evens earlier on Snowy but they didn't want to play for for any decent stakes, someone is guessing with those prices

I like Snowy in all the bets they have up there, really be surprised if he doesn't lead tonight and wouldn't be surprised if he stayed in front

Well done PF.

I backed Silva last week after watching his previous runs as he looked a serious propsect.

Did not play last night and did not see early prices about him. Would probably have backed Trent anyway on the draw so it made no difference to me as I couldn't see Silva getting a run.

Any views on whether Graduation Day can make up into Derby dog or needs 600? Both himself and litter brother Signal Tower are high class prospects. Dalton wanted a fair bit for the latter but didn't feel as though he would fully get 6 bends and he made less appeal as a result. Nice and honest from Dalton all the same but it stopped a sale to English owner.
Report woodmanchester May 12, 2013 3:26 PM BST
Blanket finish in the 600 final. A lot was made of the draw but didnt seem to matter with all dogs having more or less every chance. Apart from the tail-ender, anything could have won, so tight was the finish. Sugar Ray blew it at the start

He ran well last night DV after getting some early bother, you'd think he could easily make up into a Derby dog. Sure we will see them back around Shelbourne soon
Report Distant View May 13, 2013 1:27 PM BST
Signal Tower is very strong in the second half of the race. His running style suggests that 6 bends would be no problem but he should be effective at 550 with more experience and very useful up to 600. Graduation Day does more in the middle part of the race.

I am sure their next stop is Shelbourne anyway.
