Anyone got a retired one on steroids?

Donemylot was in same position few yrs ago ,was also told by vet they buy a bit of time as a last resort but at a price (re side effects).Opted not to have them and was pts shortly after.Imo better to act a week to soon than a day too late.The closest you will get to the right answer is to go with your conscience.

best of luck with her done.......i believe it is the right decision ......aside from the nasty ones.....insatiable hunger is a very common side effect and the added weight puts the joints under increasing pressure..........there are some homeopathic options that may help and many of the online stores have a helpline...

cheers for that, the vets have an homeopathic. She was 30kg last year, 29kg 9 months ago, and last month gone from 25.9 to 23.9. She was on 'happy pills' which help her mental state (the dog not the wife), due to old dogs syndrome but its sad watching her go to the garden and sit down on the grass in snow or  pouring rain not really know what she is doing.

Very sad DML.Its always sad when their time comes and i hope you dont wait to long.If she is really failing then the best thing is not to let her suffer.
Like Hector says your concience should tell you what to do or when to do it.

spoke to a dog trainer here today about this and he candidly said it was a waste of money
must be hard as you are clearly emotionally attached
sometimes you just cant get to the bottom of them
I have 23 year old welsh mountain pony my grandchildren love over here but he loses weight when he goes out in the field
He is fed twice a day, wormed regularily and I have had three vets try and sort it.
Two of them said steroids (which I did not give him), the other checked his teeth but couldnt find an answer for the weight loss.
He is still very active and doesnt appear in pain, so like yerself I am stuck on what to do.
If it weren't for the kids I'd be on to tescos, thats what normally happens here..... tough one

My old girl was on steroids for her last 18 months, she lasted til she was nearly 15. Her appetite increased as did her thirst but she wasnt unappy unil her last week of life. There is no right or wrong decision, you will know whats right for her.

Hope you find the strength to do your last favour for her when she tells you the times right dml,very best of luck to you.

She must read this; hasnt been better in herself for months. Amazing creatures.Will be interesting on the scales in a couple of weeks

Hope you dont mind an update. Taken her off all drugs except for Propalin, which she ad we need believe me! Was weighed last night at 23.3, lost 6 pips in 2 weeks. Vet says lots of muscle wastage which of course we knew. Probably something more than just age but its pointless doing loads of tests at her age.

She has started her occasional wanders again but will be monitoring her weight over the next few weeks but as she eats fine we have decided that 22 will be the weight that it all ends, as I have seen whippets weigh more.

Sad time when this happens,its the only downside to having a much loved pet.

sorry to hear that but sure you done the right thing, it was the last act of kindness you could do for her.  Over 10 years ago we had an old girl the same and as a comforting last resort she was on steroids, but regret it now, I know we can all look back with hindsight, but I reckon it would have been kinder to let nature take it's course.  She had a good home and a happy retirement and we all loved her, and they just break your bloody heart.
