"Greyhound racing is not covered, and in any case there was a perception within the sport that any late withdrawal could significantly change the make-up of a race, making one of the remaining runners far more likely to gain a clear path. However, Walmsley, who has raised the issue before, says most punters nowadays don't read as much into dogs being withdrawn as holding such significance. He sees Rule 4 as a pragmatic solution."
really, are we all that thick that we don't think a dog coming out of the race doesn't make a big difference to the make up.
All because a punter went berserk Saturday night when there was a late withdrawal and the dog he had backed won and he only got his stake back.
What is others opinion on this? I hope this doesn't catch on elsewhere.
Let's say you want to be with Trap 1 as Trap 2 moves right from boxes and is middle run up so you can't see Trap 3 getting a run and trap 1 will get a solo. Trap 2 is now withdrawn and you are on Trap 1 at shorter than 6/4 when now in fact you probably would make him a bigger price than that as now Trap 3 looks likely to get a run too. That cannot be right.
Obviously that is just a hypothetical situation but i think it gets the point across.

This place has broke me and i've now ended up rambling on to myself.
It's in the RP today PS that Belle Vue on course bookmakers will now be operating Rule 4 deductions for late withdrawals.

when i used to work for this mob about 5 years ago they thought about bringing rule 4 in for greyhounds, i argued until i blue in the face you couldnt do it, should have seen the look on their faces when i tried to explain that a dog coming out would in certain circumstances diminish the chances of others not improve it and that as i punter i would not want to be on.
unfortuantely there isnt really an ideal alternative, or at least we couldnt think of one.

im probably a bit bias irish, personally i would say no, when i joned nearly 9 years back it was a top place, good people, and they looked after you. then for about 3 years before the flotation to get their books in order they started squeezing the life more and more out of their staff, went from making people feel valued and paying half decent bonuses to making it almost impossible to bring in bonuses much past half the size by setting ludicrous targets. at times there was definitely borderline bullying mentality. a lot of people that i had respect for left and it got to the point i just had enough. appointments were made in high positions taking in people with zero experience with the industry and when they gave speechees it was obvious they were so out of touch with the industry.
i've still got a lot of friends there, most that know the time of day but they flushed out a lot of quality and replaced it with sh1t, a lot of time because they were on better money. that said, although i got mates in the irish office i dont know if people feel as strongly about management as they once did and i have already heard a few very positive things about the lad that took over a few months ago.

All i'd like to see is a re-formed market to early prices. SP nearly always a joke and take a rule 4 out of that is a farce. Although getting youre money back as good as it gets compared to backing an odds-on dead-heater, in which case youre out of pocket

As Erwhat says, agreeing to void a bet can work too. Some bookmakers already operate this practice. I remember i was changing bets left right and centre one night with 365, coz i had non runners on multiples, makes it awkward but i was accomodated

It's the on course Belle Vue bookies that are doing it, not the betting shops.
When there was a late withdrawal all bets placed on track prior to the withdrawal are void, the on course bookmakers then make a new market with the remaining runners. However now the bets will not be void, they will now be settled with a rule 4.
I think it should be left the way it is.

Not sure i understand, but i'm just a simple tongue-tied Mancunian. How late a late withdrawal are you talking about? At Belle Vue there is never usually a withdrawal after the weights sheet goes out, no betting on races at that point anyway. Maybe you are just referring to open races of which Belle Vue have very few, Manchester Puppy Cup just been cancelled due to lack of entries. On course bookmakers seldom have early prices to my knowledge, unless its a big final so i dont really see how a rule 4 would come into play?
