glanmire phanter  it's checked in between dogs at the gap in the railshappy with jumeirah dubai, showed good pace to the turn and can run bend 2 better, decent time impressed with how drumna ice ran BV |

Peckham Spring was away and not for catching but when Drumcove Lad turned second, i thought, great, he's in the final. Not meant to be though, as he eased on the crest of the bend, others came rushing through and he was narrowly eliminated. Dynamo Joe second.
Dont ask me how he did it, but Skate On eased round in front of Ferndale Jess on the crest of the bend and won comfortbly. No 33/1 shot for the final now and such is my atrocious luck antepost, thinking of laying him off |

Well, here goes again: Drumna Ice shot out, soon led and must be considered one of the country's leading sprinters on this form. Jumeirah Dubai was close up on the crest but probably blew a sure qualifying place when checking wide, looking for room |

Didnt hold out much hope Fatty. Drumna Ice looked the part and the rest in a heap beforehand. Congratulations to the winner, Charlie and connections anyway. Thats twice, to me anyway, a relatively unknown has popped up recently in a big competition now after Glanmire Lad. Bit late in the season to be throwing your cap in for Sprinter of the Year but you never know if Ice wins the National Sprint?

Not so sure Wonder. Scurry only Category 2 and the likes of Lil Risky and Ferndale Jess won plenty of races this season

Could possibly be some slight speculation though Wonder. Think Risky won Peterborough Derby over 420m, although Risky a sprinter really. If 400m Romford is deemed a sprint, 420m Peterborough could be too? Slightly grey area, imo

I know golden sprint is 4 bend competition but proper 2 bend comps usually decide the winner
peterborough derby cannot be included imo, there's got to be a cut off point somewhere, otherwise the TV trophy winner will up for it as well  |

Suppose youre right Wonder but 4 bend sprints at Romford and Crayford not too disimillar to Peterborough really. Only point i'm trying to make really, Scurry only Cat Two, so we could be in a position whatever wins National Sprint will possibly be Sprinter of the Year

Whatever wins , or is nominated , it should be remembered that it is the Sprinter of the YEAR award - not the sprinter of the last couple of months in the year.
There are some dogs which have been on the go since January, winning open sprints, and competitions each and every month whilst others may end up running in less than a dozen races and expect to be put forward for the award. Incidentally, the same should apply to all categories I.e. Dog of the YEAR, Bitch of the YEAR etc. |

That's what i was saying, too, Cappo. "Bit late for Drumna Ice to be throwing his cap in the ring." All in good class, i guesstimate Jess won about 15 sprints and Risky about 10, not including 416m Monmore, 420m Peterborough and 450m Sunderland. I would put the pair in contention, although Wonder says Risky no chance

I agree you need to consider all contenders across the year but it isn't like the sky 'top dog' competition where most wins count, its about what they've won ok, scurry is a cat 2 but most of the cat 1 sprinter were in it, and DI hacked up in all 3 rounds, but let's see what notts in december brings before getting carried away |

Drumcove Lad only had a couple of races (winning one) before winning Scurry and National Sprint last year, so there is a prescedent that the winner of the two end of year sprints to be named Sprinter of the Year.

You are correct Ian, Drumcove Lad only really raced in the last 4 -5 months of 2011 but in my opinion was a worthy winner of Sprinter of the Year as he convincingly beat the best sprinters around in the two top sprint competitions. If Drumsna Ice does the same he may well be a contender for Sprinter of the Year but there is also a good chance that he will be beaten by some of the other sprinters around at the moment.
The sprint division is wide open as there is no superstar such as Jimmy Lollie which is why I believe you need to assess the whole of 2012 and not just the last 3 months. Incidentally, I believe the National Sprint is also a Cat 2 so there are actually no Cat 1 comps specifically for 2 bend sprinters so if, as has been suggested, "it's about what they've won not how often they've won" there is a "sprinter" who has actually won a Cat 1 comp this year . . . Lil Risky. Will he win Sprinter of the Year - in my opinion, probably not Is he the best "sprinter" around at the moment - in my opinion, probably yes |

, how exactly?pummeled by jumeirah dubai at brough, beaten at henlow on sky, previously beaten by fernhill jess at henlow and picked off by glanmire phanter at yarmouth imo they have blunted the speed of the dog by tackling short 4 bend trips where, credit to the dog, its done well |

Incidentally, who do you mean by "they" have blunted the dog's speed? |

cappo, please do not insult my intelligence, I understand completely the use of quotation marks
they is connections of the dog, it is my opinion that they blunted the speed of the dog by running it over 4 bends, I think the dog's record earlier in the year versus now backs that up - but it is only my opinion I don't want to argue, in fact we are half agreeing anyway, the whole point of the discussion was to mull over who is going to be sprinter of the year, not who is going to be 'sprinter' of the year, I agree lil risky is an admirable dog mixing 2 bends/sharp 4 and nobody can take his victories away but he is practically the only top-class dog mixing the two, and the sprint part of the equation (what the award is judged on) is his weakest suit imo. |
