Maybe it should have been 48 dogs to begin with. Lots of deadwood and a round less might have been better instead of it so longdrawn out. Okay, a few disappointments for the ones that didnt get in, but would they have had a realistic chance anyway?

It was announced by Curraheen Park on Tuesday evening that Sunvalley John has been withdrawn from the first heat in the second round of the Red Mills Irish Laurels on Saturday night.

The son of Crash and Mikado Miss which is trained by Michael Hallahan for Claire Lawless was due to race from trap six in the opening heat.

This means that the line-up for that race is now: 1 Cuil Cougar; 2 Black Warrior; 3 Money Talks; 4 Cashen Mafuma; 5 Blue Jet Sky; 6 Vacant.

Money Talks beat Derby runner up Cuil Cougar in 28.11. Ashfield Impact did well, 28.32, but Knockglass Billy can do better. Cambushmore took the scalp of Confident Rankin, 28.41. Camas Crash, 28.56, gamely beat an unlucky Razldazl Rioga, who missed the kick, jostled about and couldnt get clear. Ballymac Vic superb, (as Jay said 27.94) kicking myself didnt go with him now seeing as he was my big Derby hope, but not past the post yet. My Allen Master 2nd but beaten a long way, will have to do much better to figure in future. Boherna House no mistake, 28.14

Liam Dowling yesterday gave a very positive report on his brilliant tracker Ballymac Vic which is now a 4-5 favourite with the layers for the Connolly’s Red Mills Irish Laurels.

Last week Vic had been a little off-colour early in the week but Dowling said yesterday that “he is much better this week. He has been bouncing for the last couple of days and now we can just keep our fingers crossed”.

Liam continued: “We are now in the semis but the old saying is that you’re only as good as your last game. He has to hold his form as he has a lot of running done but has got nothing out of it yet. We would be thrilled to get to the final but in semis you always need a little bit of luck”.

All the major Irish based firms have quoted Ballymac Vic as the 4-5 favourite to become the Laurels champion and the best prices available are 4-5 Ballymac Vic; 8 Camas Crash, Confident Rankin; 10 Boherna House, Razldazl Rioga, Knockglass Billy; 20 Allen Master, Cashen Mafuma, Liveanddangerous; 25 Ashfield Impact; 50 Ballybough Hawke, Tinas Nova

Ballymac Vic is flying and should duly land the second semi. Hopeful of a place in the final for 33/1 antepost shot Allen Master. May yet go quicker round here, judged on his 28.38sec 525yds Shelbourne. Remaining spot could either be Boherna House or Confident Rankin but they need room to manoeuvre, could be who secures the smoothest passage.

Razldazl Rioga has a good chance to get clear in the first semi. 12/1 play Knockglass Billy hasnt come away well past twice, but capable of far better. Just favour Ashfield Impact to reach the final over Camas Crash but could be a close call

Am i the only one that thinks there could be something wrong with Razldazl Rioga?? The whole world wants to be with him tonight but i thought he ran shocking last week. Ok he has a great make up but he overcame the trap 5 draw easy last week to claim the rails and was absolutely stuffed.

He absolutely smashed from 5 and easily got across and got to the bend in front of Boherna House who was forced to check out wide behind Rioga yet led him out of the 2nd bend. Then into the 3rd Rioga had a few lengths on the rest of the field who closed right up on the bend and only for the dog behind running up Rioga's ass would have gone by him there too. To me he looked to run the bend desperate slow.

So you're talking about the first round when Mill Bling Bling led him and Rioga clipped him on the 1st and got up his inside, Mill Bling Bling then paced up outside him and led into the 3rd forcing Rioga to check on the bend.

It's a bit different as there was no dogs around him last week, into the 3rd especially.

It may be nothing and he may win but a 7/4 shot?? He did 28.83 leading to the bend last week.

13/10/2012
Razldazl Rioga and Boherna House secured their places in the final of the 2012 Connolly’s Red Mills Irish Laurels with stylish victories at a packed Curraheen Park on Saturday night.

But that scarcely tells the story of what was a sensational night of action.

One of the real talking points was the shock elimination of the red-hot ante-post favourite Ballymac Vic, as he paid the price for missing the kick. The headlines go to Razldazl Rioga however as he seems to be peaking at just the right time and will now bid to defend his title in next weekend’s decider.

Dolores Ruth had stated during the week that Razldazl Rioga was really bouncing and it was evident on Saturday night as he produced his finest performance of the year when making every inch in the opening semi final.

Taking a flier from trap two, Razldazl Rioga easily cleared his rivals to the turn and thereafter he was always in command. Knockglass Billy gave chase throughout, but he had no answer to Rioga, who looked right back to himself as he hit the line three lengths clear in a superb 28.24. There was a great battle for second spot as Knockglass Billy held off the late charge of the always third Tinas Nova by a neck.

HOUSE UPSETS ELIMINATED VIC

The biggest shock of the classic came fifteen minutes later as Ballymac Vic failed to qualify behind an impressive Boherna House, who continued his unbeaten run through the competition. The latter hit the ground running from trap three to set the pace in the opening yards and this was to prove the downfall of Ballymac Vic.

The hot favourite did recover well from his moderate start to move second before the corner, but he was to have little luck in running thereafter. Boherna House set the pace to the bend, but Ballymac Vic was just a length behind at this point.

Then came one of the most decisive moments in the contest. With no room available up the inside, Ballymac Vic was forced to check wide, losing momentum in the process. This allowed Boherna House to extend his lead into the back straight.

Ballymac Vic was challenging again by halfway, but now he had Allen Master to contend with up his inner, while Boherna House continued to dictate at the head of proceedings. It was at the third turn that the outcome of the race was really decided.

As Ballymac Vic attempted to move upsides the leader, he was again forced to check his stride and he lost ground to sit on the outside of the chasing pack. Boherna House was still the one to catch, but he had no intention of letting his lead slip. The Rachel Wheeler trained star dug deep to repel the challenge of Allen Master by a length in 28.50.

A length behind the front two, Confident Rankin won the race for third. The luckless Ballymac Vic came home last after losing any chance he had at the penultimate bend.

Draw for Saturday’s decider:

1 Knockglass Billy

2 Allen Master

3 Confident Rankin

4 Boherna House

5 Tinas Nova

The final looks desperate hard to work out. Basically it's what leads into the back is the winner in my opinion. I priced it as:

Knockglass Billy 4/1
Allen Master 6/1
Confident Rankin 4/1
Boherna House 7/2
Tinas Nova 66/1
Razldazl Rioga 7/2

100%

Rioga could get across again, he will lead Tinas Nova in 5 and could get a nice run to the corner despite being drawn 6. Boherna House has been getting it right at boxes during the comp and will have to do so again, he has probably been the most consistant. Knockglass Billy has been a bit hit and miss at traps but if getting it right has a massive chance. Confident Rankin is another that hasn't been at his best coming away but has a big chance if getting it right. Allen Master has not come away at all yet in the comp and needs to do so in the final, he has been running well though. I struggle to see a way Tinas Nova can win from the draw as i can't see him leading.

It's not a race to play at the current prices in my opinion as i think they have it pretty much right. Hopefully Allen Master can get it right on the night that matters but his draw is tough enough with pace up either side of him.

Main worry for him is Knockglass Billy being with him at the bend also. Same remark for Boherna House, Billy could be the stumbling block. If Billy turns ahead though, the prize should be his

If your listening to her you mite need your head examined, lightning unlikely to strike twice, hope Money Talks comes for an open or maybe the Laurels Consolation as Ballymac cant run in this.................

My head is fine thanks, i said earlier on the thread i thought he didn't look himself the way he was running in earlier rounds as he was to me eyes running the bends desperate slow.

Anyway don't see any reason for her to lie as the way the dog has ran during the Laurels up to now backs up her statement as he looked a totally different dog on Saturday night.

Lightning could well strike twice (hopefully it does if Allen Master don't win) as the dog, as i said last year before the competition is made for Curraheen Park.

Razldazl Rioga @ 20/1 - Has brilliant early, really good railer and looks made for Curraheen. Think it was a good move by Dolorus to not go for the Derby as the 550y stretches him and he now goes to Curraheen a fresh dog.

Just so i can't be accused of aftertiming

Good call pf, but he's a year older this year and needs all the luck again.
Not long to wait now, for what should be a great night.
Looks like there will be plenty shorties on the night and a short price trebbl for anyone is
Race 8 Droopys Carl for trainer linehan and JBM.(T6 Marie Gilberts dog for the 4cast).
Race 3 Leeview Dave Tr Rec last wk
Race 9 Money Talks for the KK kennel of PH
and also Linehan should win the final of the unraced with last weeks fast winner who runs from T5. but will be 1/4 shot as Curaheen bookies dont take chances.
I make Money Talks my nap of the night.
Report Da Causeway October 19, 2012 10:10 PM BST
Hi Jay Re Leeview Dave in the sprint, he is without doudt the fastest dog in the race but he has a very poor draw in trap one as the sprint box trap one is probably the worst place you want to be for a sprint in Cork. Dogs very rarely ping it from there.
Report JayTrumpOldTomDubbl October 20, 2012 10:30 AM BST
OK causeway I actually felt that he is the most vulnerable of the shorties.
I think T6 in the sprint puts you out on top of the hair rail and is the worst trap in Curaheen sprints, if Leeview pings from T1 he wins.............

Took the 4s Rioga, it's a more than fair price.

Hopefully Skip can find a smash break from Allen Master tonight, he needs it but the dog is capable of doing it.
Report Da Causeway October 20, 2012 11:15 AM BST
Hi Jay, Some interesting statistics in 2012 from 146 races the strike rate from the sprint boxes is

1)7% 2) 18%    3) 16%    4) 27%    5) 16%    6) 16%

Trap one is very very hard to win from as they say statistics don't lie.
Report JayTrumpOldTomDubbl October 20, 2012 11:33 AM BST
pf, what chance would you give Marie Gilberts other dog in R8 I think against Jimmy Barry'y Droopy's Carl ?
Stats dont lie, causeway they just fade away like good hurlersLaugh

Rubbish draw, doesn't lead doesn't win, struggle to see it leading unless it smashes.

Got a rare result i wanted in 2012. Knockglass Billy was obviously fast and showed what he could do in the Irish Sprint and Derby final night. Impressive in the first round and just because he didnt go as fast then, should never have been a 12/1 chance when i backed him towards the end. Hope he's pencilled in for Night of Stars
Report JayTrumpOldTomDubbl October 21, 2012 12:42 PM BST
Well done woodie, and never in doubt.Knockglass broke very well, seemed to move outwards, which caused some scrimmaging for the middle runners, and he was electric to the bend.Slight bother on the bend behind him and as the commentator 'Tim' said 'home for all money'.Well done to owner and trainer, and he was a really well backed winner.
Bookies won well I'd say on the night,as there were some upsets. The fav in the sprint was done no favours by the camera man (can be seen clearly on video), shoving his lens in front of the traps.
Money talks was imho dis-appointing, again and has plenty to prove now.
Droopys Carl looks over-rated, and in any event is still very novicey. Trainers Linehan and Kiely had winners, and I got out on the last Linehan winner, but the 2/1 sp was a big return as early doors he was much shorter, I got 6/4. but was glad to draw.
Huge crowd and a lovely evening added to the enjoyment.

You're being very harsh about Droopys Carl, he's only had 5 races and has only just turned 2. Give him some time and see how he turns out, in any case i haven't heard much hype about him anyway.
Report JayTrumpOldTomDubbl October 21, 2012 3:12 PM BST
Yes maybe I am being harsh pf, but he he was the subject of some real big bets, and let his connections down.Marie Gilberts dog didn't hang about and was impressive, he looked the danger to the Fav.
