Unreal - how many books would stand on a Wednesday night - Ted/Junior and Farrell?
Report p_r_e_m_i_e_r__f_a_n_t_a_s_y July 25, 2012 9:26 PM BST
Ted, Farrell, Ray (Mulvaney), Bernard

that's basically it on a Wednesday.

when it happens at galway
no-one bets ....
then it pees down with rain, they get soaked
then they think ....
what are we doing here ?
then the percentage improves
suggest you do the same

4 "bookmakers" standing and the best they can do is 251%,no excuse its wednesday, its still  251%!! as McCririck says COME RACING---but not at Shelbourne Park.
Most BAGS tracks only have 3 Bookmakers and I have never seen a return like this anywhere.
Report Bassanio July 25, 2012 10:58 PM BST
There should be an investigation into this.

No wonder even the greyhound regulars are vacating the place on a Wednesday night.

Disgraceful is too mild a word for it.

Better percentages than that at flapping tracks over here! If i'd have been a punter for that race, i would have betted with other punters! Dont know how bookies can afford their pitch sometimes. Only the desperate, or foolish, would have put hard-earned on that race

Irish is spot on.....

Let them make their book....Then stand there and get on via your blower.

They wont stand there long without taking a bean
Report Bassanio July 26, 2012 9:12 AM BST
You can't get on via the phone.

The firms that will take the bet do so at SP.

Many of the firms will not lay you and in the case of Spoils they suspend the betting 10 minutes before the off.

It would work during the Derby however when nearly every firm should have the heats priced up.
Report Catford July 26, 2012 9:16 AM BST
Nice arb on the Jocks championship - thanks for the heads up - pity I can only get on with free65 to win a tenner!  For a giggle did it and price gone right away - almost certainly any restricted account flashes a warning to their traders - hope you got on.
Report p_r_e_m_i_e_r__f_a_n_t_a_s_y July 26, 2012 9:21 AM BST
As Bassanio has pointed out lads, if you want to bet you are totally limited in your choices. The firms (if they still do) that take bets at SP usually take pennies so you'll be trawling around betting shops and then hoping the dog gets returned a decent price.

As for people saying don't bet, that is too simplistic a way to look at it in my view. Let's say i owned Atom and i gave him an unofficial around Newbridge or Enniscorthy the previous week and he'd done 28.50 and i made him at 1/2 shot, i'd be then happy to take 5/4.

Yes betting to 250% they are far less likely to be going a price you wan't to play at but it's not impossible.

Still i was very surprised by what i saw

Cant you use betfair on your Blower PF?

Unsure if Shel gets put up on here regularly enough?

Betfair don't have markets for Irish racing, the only time they have had markets this year that i've seen (bar Tralee and Drumbo sky nights) where the Betfair 600 heats and the liquidity was absolutely rubbish.
Report Catford July 26, 2012 12:44 PM BST
One of the Sky dogs from Ireland/NI was on at the same time as an England Euros game (or other massive Euros game) - was a Saturday night - yep liquidity was poor - something like £8/9k a race - think was the Drumbo card which was contested only by Irish dogs with none coming over from England/Scotland  - was the drumbo Derby
Report bannahan July 26, 2012 3:30 PM BST
Fair enough. What do you do if your just going for your Saturday night meet. If there is nothing that you fancy strongly do you just have a nights watching/note taking or do you play at the prices on offer.

Just seems to me if thw lads at Shel and i would imagine they punt heavily in the main all stood off and let the books stand there all night things may change. Maybe they are just fed up of coup after coup smashing them to pieces Laugh
Report Bassanio July 26, 2012 3:50 PM BST
Odds on a Saturday night would be much better.

They might open to 150% or so in some races but they would usually bet to no more than 125% before the off, maybe shorter.

It is not a punters paradise but it sure is better than a Wednesday.

silly question time

bearing in mind there are a lot of very good dogs in ireland
and a lot of greyhound people/punters

why is liquidity so bad on here when irish racing features

is it simply lack of pictures ?
dont /didnt 24 dawgs and laddies show shelbourne ?

Confused

in answer to you question tr

when Go Barking Mad showed racing from Shelbourne and Harolds X live on t.v.
the liquidity on b/f markets were very good I remember

I think the problem with Irish percentages is graded racingConfused
I may be wrong but it appears to me trainers can just about get away with anything they want..

Ironically I think graded racing is far superior over here in the U.K.(not opens)
but of course the sport overall is not
Report track record July 26, 2012 6:57 PM BST
does that mean they think graded racing in ireland is bent ?
Report ebulGery July 26, 2012 7:13 PM BST
probablyLaugh

tbh I am no expert on Irish racing
from memory of betting on GBM I found dogs could improve anything up to
2 secs from their previous run....and it was accepted as normal improvement
(if that happened over here the trainer would be looking for new employment)
This was usually in lower grades with a lot of newcomers
Bookies have no idea of the strength of the dogs, racecard form is meaningless
so I suppose they bet as if they would at a flapping track

What a sizzling run by Camas Crash tonight 28.15

Not sure but I think only Panther and Premier Fantasy have ever went around the 525 faster!

Because they are a joke and we have talked about this on the Derby thread.

Now he will be a 16/1 shot or so and there would have been some ready to back him before tonight (not me included) if they could have got a price.

There was a gasp from the terrace when the time flashed up for the ninth race, an Open 525, at Shelbourne on Thursday night as the lights displayed the figures 28.15 after Camas Crash had led home Krelco by all of seven lengths.

The Rachel Wheeler trained Camas Crash (Crash/ Marys Opal) had looked a serious dog in earlier outings with a 28.39 run around Limerick in May and a 28.52 solo spin at Shelbourne four weeks ago. But this still took everybody by surprise as Krelco led narrowly to the bend but Camas Crash bumped his way through on the inside and led into the back. From here he pulled right away to win by seven lengths with Carloway Bridge running on strongly another length and a half third.

Immediate reaction was for some to suggest “the track is flying” and, while there is no denying how well the surface has settled and the times being produced, it must be taken into account that the seven length runner-up clocked 28.57 in winning her two weeks back! So the times actually tally!

Another to produce a fast run was the Damian Patterson trained Exit Milan (Hondo Black/ Drumcove Blonde) which turned in easily a career best when winning the A1 seventh in 28.62. A nice dash of early saw him lead into the back from Lolos Hurricane and Woodsgift Ash. Exit Milan led by two and a half on the third bend but had to race to the line to beat Lolos by a length and a half.

The judge had plenty to do on the night and he was again called into action in the eighth race, an Open 525, where the Tina McGrane trained Monery Boss (Ninja Jamie/ Monery Lady) got away smartly and was in apparent command down the back. But Hillcroft Lexie came with a flying run and looked a certain winner but Monery Boss bravely held her by a short head in 28.71.

The final race of the night was an A1 550 and the Walter Sames trained veteran Bulls Bolt)(Yeah Man/ Chloes Dream) ran like a young fellow as he took it up from Walk On Fire halfway down the back and held repeated challenges before winning by two lengths from Walk On Fire in 30.18.

Very pleased to read about the good dogs at SP.
This thread is still about why 251% returns at the track?
WHY?
Report woodmanchester July 27, 2012 7:36 AM BST
Someone mentioned graded Irish racing like flapping over here, where bookies would go evens each of 6, totally in the dark before one emerged as "the one", probably returning 1/2, with the rest not pushed out much from evens!
Report irishone July 27, 2012 8:58 PM BST
The reason why "born a winner" can be found in P F 's statement ..."and i made him at 1/2 shot, i'd be then happy to take 5/4"... in other words the geysers in the know make their doh.
Meanwhile the geysers who aint got a clue do their doh,and tight feckers like me say that 5/4 at 250% should be 5/2 so they can feck off ! Cry
