These certainly are exciting times for the O’Flynn kennels in Tullaroan. On Saturday night they toasted classic glory as Milldean Tally won the Sporting Press Irish Oaks at Shelbourne.
Then next Saturday the kennel “star” Milldean Panther (pic right) will take his first comeback step when he has a trial at the same venue.
Despite it all, John O’Flynn Snr was as cool as a cucumber when I spoke with him yesterday and he outlined the future plans for the kennel’s superstars.
“I honestly don’t know what we are doing with the bitch. We are still savouring our sin on Saturday. She ran so well and now she’s going to have a break as she has been on the go for eight weeks.
“To be honest I’d be half tempted not to race her again but I know the owners will want her to race and I suppose we will have to consider the Derby. After that I don’t know but the Night of Stars Bitch race at the end of the year would have to be in our minds with the huge money on offer”.
While Tally is having a few quiet weeks and basking in her new role of “Queen of the Track”, her illustrious kennel companion Milldean Panther is reported ready for a return to the track.
He hasn’t raced since April 21st when he won the Formula One Grand Prix final at Curraheen Park in 28.24 after walking out of traps and giving all his rivals a big start. He has since been treated for a back problem but O’Flynn Snr reports that he is in “great form and ready to go. We plan to give him a trial on Saturday night and if everything goes right there, which it should, we will then give him a trial around Dundalk in preparation for the **** International. That would set him up nicely for the Irish Derby”.
Meanwhile, John Jnr can celebrate his new status as a classic winning trainer. He has done a mighty job with his bitch which was originally bought as a potential stayer after some fine performances around Harold’s Cross when known as Tallys Girl. I have little doubt that she could be a huge player over longer distances but I doubt if we will see her in that role.

Phil Gough yesterday reported that Sparta Maestro was slightly the worse for wear following his surprise exit from the ECC Timber 550 at Shelbourne on Saturday.
However the encouraging news is that he expects the dog to be back in full fitness within two weeks.
Speaking yesterday morning, Gough said: “I knew there was something amiss when he took a step to the inside on breaking and he never really strode out properly. It was very obvious on Sunday morning that he was sore on a foot. He has a couple of minor problems but the major one is a sore pad on his foot. It was as if he had stepped on a stone and it was very sore but it should be okay in a week”.
The plan is now to give him two weeks off to allow him recover fully and then the Puppy Derby champion will bid for the Townviewfoods.com Champion Stakes at Shelbourne which is due to commence on Saturday, July 14th.

I'm scared stiff to put up how I think the final will be run, I can only see Puma or George winning, if Puma doesn't clear George by the 2nd or even halfway, it will never beat it, bet George ew this morning, hoping Puma wins with George running 2nd. cheers.

Hope youre right Bairn. Dont want Cougar or Camas. Puma's flying now and should tail Cougar, then pick him up. Would be nice, but cant see George getting into it. More likely Sugar Ray breaks, then it's game on! Holding on to the slight prospect Imp leads, trouble behind and holds on Happy
Report nineteen points September 4, 2012 7:20 AM BST
dont you think even if imp does come away it runs to its right to the first bend? could be plenty room for sugar ray to get going. my head is starting to hurt!!

Coolykereen Imp has gone up dead straight from 4 on the occasions he has been that far out and runs the bend better too from drawn out. I think the draw has worked out well for him with Sugar Ray and Cougar moving rails inside him and Camas staying wide outside him, however his only real hope seems to be leading and trouble on the inside but even if that happens it sets it up for Camas who would also avoid it.

Report frank60 September 5, 2012 4:51 PM BST
Puma and Suger ray are with a clear run..no question. ..but it would have to be a trouble free run...not likely to happen... i also think that cougar best run is around 29.60 so a 29.35 run would catch couger' IF HE LEADS] A fascinating final Happy

he's not run up anythink as good early rounds but the trainer could get him out to go round handy!!
Great final with all sorts of ways it could be played out !
Report Bassanio September 5, 2012 7:37 PM BST
It does not take a 29.25 run if the dog gets a clear.

If Cougar leads and Camas comes from behind him, his running style will not have been compromised in the slightest despite being behind. Camas will not do that sort of clock but can do around the 29.50 mark alright.

It all depends on the extent to which the dog behind is compromised without necessarily being baulked.

What a card, cannot wait for tonight. Played a few of them off course.

Race 2:: Allen Master @ 7/4 + 6/4 (Think he is absolutely plotted up, wants rails and has them. A decent exit and he leads them up and if going around he should not be getting picked up.)

Race 3:: Howling Wind @ 12/1 (Will he stay? I don't know but if he repeats his 550y and 575y runs around here he will go a mile clear and i have a suspicion he may get home, i think he'd get 750y anyway. The long run to the bend should give him the chance to get to the front and hopefully he builds up a huge advantage.)

Race 5:: Solo Star @ 7/2 (If she comes away here she could be gone. The draw is good as long as she don't make a mess of the start as she should clear Shabby in 5 and have the mid to wide to herself. You'd have to worry about Diva getting a run with Patsy drawn outside her and Millie inside her and anyway she can't afford to make a mess of the start as she has done the last twice.)

Race 7:: Ruthless Man @ 7/1 (for the reasons i posted on the Plate thread)

Race 8:: Ballymac Vic @ 2/1 (Surprised he is so big. It's a brilliant race and i think the week off may swing it in his favour.)

Race 9:: Camas, Sugar Ray, Puma, George, Cougar, Imp (biggest winner to smallest winner)

Race 12:: Tynwald Bolt @ 5/1 + 7/2 (If Sparta Maestro comes away and goes around in front i think he could possibly go close to Late Late Show's clock but at the prices i'm against him. 3,4,5 and 6 are all either mid or wide so he will have to do it right to ensure he clears them run up. On the inside Charly has looked paceless early in his races around Shelbourne and this time i think Tynwald Bolt will get the rails early and lead on the fence, it's a worry that he eases into the bend but i can see him leading around tonight and it will take some effort from any dog to back run him.)

Race 13:: Noirs Buachaill @ 9/2 (I expect both Martinstown and Noirs to reverse form with Abbeyville as they should improve for their last runs. Will Tibetan Skies get a run? I thought Noirs Buachaill ran a blinder last week and would probably have won if getting a run at the 3rd and have just sided with him. Martinstown is a fair price too and if he went bigger i may play him too.)

Glorius warm sunny day today, holiday tomorrow and most improtant probably the best greyhound card i've ever seen. Can't wait!!!! Grin

Future Boy could reproduce trial form, disappointing for my money with his clear run.

North Bound deserved to win the Plate. God fluffed it.

Very pleased with Ballymac Vic. Would surely have been a major force in the big one.

Puma was my 3rd worst result in the Derby but he's improved tremendously since the Quarters whereas Sugar seems to have gone backwards. Wanted him, Imp or George really.

Youre entitled to your opinion and may think i'm crazy BJG but Sugar has had a flash in the pan. Until he can run faster consistently on overall form, i would be looking to other Derby type dogs in future, just my choice. Too draw dependant anyway. He may get red next time and fly round, but i wouldnt be totally sure. Maybe he's a bit of an inconsistent starter too. Put everything together and super-fast yes, but risky type, imo.

What was he formerly named anyway?

who will be the new sponsors

Thanks Irish, but not familiar with that name. Apart from costing me enough, i've nothing against the dog and wish him and connections well. Just that from a betting point of view, wont be rushing in again. Would be great for the sport if he could approach 29.29sec runs in future, but it just looks like an isolated oasis to me

Sorry Never Give Up, didnt mean to skip you. Wouldnt have a clue. Think Paddy Power have had a long connection with the Derby but from an early-price aspect, i'm all for Bet365 stomping up the prize money! Wink

Good to see the back of them and they were only there to spend a separate Irish budget which they no longer have.

Powers unlikely to return and 365 have no interest in much expansion into the Irish market or sponsorsing Irish events.

Will betfair take it despite the dire liquidity during the 600 and the Derby?

Not easy to see who else there is as Red Mills and Gain probably get the exposure they need for their captive audience already.

Just watched a replay there the sectionals are a bit iffy to say the least, are they taken at the 1st line or 2nd line? PF i know the angle is a bit deceiving but surely IMP is not .09 behind Cougar and level with Puma
Report woodmanchester September 15, 2012 1:38 PM BST
Awkward angle caught me out many times. To the eye, Cougar may have been a length up on Imp but no way Puma was level with Imp, a good length behind at least. Having looked at the race again, what a race Puma has run. Knocked about several times early, yet still got up in a flying time, amazing!

It's not rocket science re Sugar Ray you facking div. He leads around again he is well capable of another run like that, leading around will be the problem though.

Aug 26th - Tyrur Sugar Ray drawn trap 1 with a dog in 2 that had been crawling to the bend, he leads around after making his best start of the comp and clocks 29.29

Sept 1st - Tyrur Sugar Ray again drawn trap 1 but the big difference this time is Cuil Cougar is in 2 and he has flying early pace and rails and there is no way Sugar Ray can lead him. He then got shocking trouble on the bend and was lucky to stay up.

Sept 8th - Tyrur Sugar Ray drawn trap 4, Cuil Cougar in 3 who he can't clear and get to the rails. Skywalker Puma moves off in front of him from 2 hampering him and taking his ground leaving him last into the bend. He then has to slightly check on the 2nd as he almost runs up Razldazl George's arse. He had no chance from there and clocks 29.78

A must get red and must lead dog then, like i said, risky, you doinking div. Welcome back anyway, hope you had a nice time
Report p_r_e_m_i_e_r__f_a_n_t_a_s_y September 17, 2012 8:32 PM BST
He has to lead or turn on the tails of leaders if he is too clock anywhere near that time. I've been saying he is mad for the rails from the first time i seen him run Shelbourne, anyway the winner was class on the night, as Matt said months ago 'whatever beats my lad will win the Derby'.

Yes good time although lack of sleep now and horrid hangover really kicking in now Sad
Report woodmanchester September 17, 2012 8:43 PM BST
Sound like you had a good time. All i was saying really is Sugar too draw dependant and think he will be frustrating when you know what he can do when all falls into place. I just cant see it happening very often. Have a pint of cold water, some anadin and get your head down mate
