MILLDEAN SET FOR A RETURN TO ACTION

30/03/2012
John O’Flynn Snr yesterday confirmed that he hopes Milldean Panther will soon be resuming his racing career as he recovers from the injury which prevented his participation in the Easter Cup.

The dog was being checked yesterday evening by vet Ray Cuddihy but O’Flynn was very hopeful that the dog can have a trial in a matter of days.

Speaking yesterday, John said: “He is coming along nicely and his back problem seems to have disappeared. The Larry Dunne Open at Shelbourne looks a possibility but no firm decision has been made yet”.

Any doubts about the fitness of Milldean Panther were truly removed at Curraheen Park this evening when the John O’Flynn Jnr trained son of College Causeway covered the 525 yards in a sensational 27.87.

Milldean was having his first look at Curraheen but he ran it like a dream. He wasn’t the best away but quickly moved up in gears, railed magnificently and handled the track to perfection. Though no definite decision has been made, he is a possible entry for the two-run Formula One Grand Prix which commences next Saturday.

Milldean Panther has been confirmed as a definite runner in the Formula One Grand Prix at Curraheen Park on Saturday night.

The draw for the 12 dog stake is due to be made this morning and the John O’Flynn Jnr trained dog will be among them.

Racing manager Brian Collins has had a pretty difficult task filling the €2,500 for two-run competition over 525 yards due to the likely presence of Milldean which clocked a fantastic 27.87 in a solo spin around the circuit last Saturday.

Other entries for the Formula One Grand Prix include Mines A Pint, Cambushmore, Knockglass Billy, Cooly Colebe and Castlelyons Ralf but the list will not be finalised until this morning.

Saturday’s card will comprise of seven finals in all, headed by the McCarthy Group Insurance Cork Oaks, as well as a Novice 750 and an A2 525.

I agree with Chopper76 in a way, the hype is unreal. As for Premier Fantasy i firmly believe had he ran on the track at Shelbourne in the last year to 2 years he would have gone under 28sec (surprise surprise Laugh)

John O’Flynn Snr yesterday reported that Milldean Panther will bypass the Larry Dunne Open 525 which is due to commence this weekend and instead will have a thorough check up to determine if something is preventing him from breaking in his normal manner.

Though thrilled with the dog’s flying victory in the final of the Formula One Grand Prix at Curraheen Park on Saturday, John admitted that “we are puzzled why he is not getting out of the boxes better. He is bouncing here and appears to be in perfect condition and the times he is doing in his races prove that there is nothing major wrong. We are just wondering if something is preventing him from getting out of the boxes faster than he has been doing this year”.

On Saturday night he trailed the field in joint last place until the waters parted ahead of him on the bend. He then dived through the gap and left his rivals struggling in his wake as he raced to a seven length victory in 28.24.

Said John, “We won’t race him on Saturday but will give him a trial around Shelbourne in advance of having his next race there”.

It was a good weekend for the Tullaroan kennels as Milldean Tally landed a little touch in the Novice 750 at Curraheen on Saturday while Dear Pa was an impressive third round winner in the Red Mills Produce Stakes at Clonmel on Sunday.

Dear Pa is unbeaten in the Produce Stake and, while he has a slight problem, he is expected to be ready for duty on Sunday evening.
Report BJG July 30, 2012 3:29 PM BST
Clive Francis, joint owner of Milldean Panther, has confirmed that the brilliant tracker has now joined the Dolores Ruth kennels.
Rumours had been rife for some days to this effect and official confirmation came this morning in the form of a statement from Francis. It said:
“Following previous reports from John O’Flynn Jnr, we can confirm that the ongoing back problems and a recent injury to the Achilles tendon to Milldean Panther are evident that he has incurred serious career threatening injuries.
“With Milldean Panther’s best interests at the forefront; we have taken Veterinary Advice to treat his injuries first. Panther will go through intensive Veterinary Treatment and Physiotherapy, before any decision is taken on his future.
“Due to the extent of his injuries a decision has been made by his owners to put Milldean Panther under the care of Dolores Ruth. With veterinary supervision, Panther will be treated at Dolores Ruth’s establishment, where he will undergo intensive treatment & physiotherapy. Dolores has a specialty in bringing back badly injured dogs to soundness.
“Should the dog make a recovery, decisions on his future career will be made at that stage. There also has been a change of ownership for Milldean Panther.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank John O’Flynn Jnr for looking after Milldean Panther”.

Badly injured?

I must admit the owners have not covered themselves in glory from start to finish in this. Between drawing as many straws as possible, doing the Spoils deal for an easy buck and now moving trainers, they are not the type that I would wish a whole lot of success for. Seem to have really tried to milk him for all he was worth. Maybe all of us would have done that, but I doubt it.

Youre welcome to your opinion Company. Reckoned i would get some response after a comment like that but he was billed as the greatest since Premier Fantasy and think we have just been fobbed off with stories of breeding, retirement etc. There were lengthy discusions of a Panther with Eden Star match etc, but it's all been a waste of ink and time. I still rate the dog but not sure i believe what people say anymore. Seriously injured? Did he hobble round to the pick up in the International? And, i'm not just talking through my pocket. How on earth can they think of retiring not really that long out of puppy status? Like i said, anti-climax. Sure the ones who really know whats happening think we all came down on the last shower!

Not sure i agree with you Company and siding with Mesi. Dont see how Panther couldnt be right with those flying trials and as Mesi says, he just cant go the pace to the bend with speedy types. Think if he had been in the Derby though, he could have kept qualifying, reached Gold Cup final and anything could have happened Derby final night, if things went his way. I could be wrong, but i didnt hear anything about injury immediately after his last race?, even though it looked a shade below par run

Who said he got injured in the Dundalk International?? Let's put that race into perspective, he had an awful draw, a truely shocking draw and as said by many on here was a joke of a price on the draw alone. As for the race he didn't get a great start which is crucial with the short run to the bend and got early trouble. Quail Hollow led around (Cox Cup Champion) and won. He was followed by Cabra Millie (Oaks runner up, Christmas Oaks finalist) and then Milldean Tally (Oaks winner), they are 3 top class dogs who all get the 550y well. The 3 of those dogs who turned in front of him had all been racing recently while Milldean Panther had not had a race in almost 3 months so it's fair to assume they would have had a fitness advantage over him. I thought he ran a perfectly respectable race, not what some wanted to see but not as bad as some where making out.

I can't recall them saying when or how he got injured. All i seem to remember was it was in the RP on the Friday that he was going to trial at Shelbourne the next night but then was pulled out that morning due to injury. The story for the paper would have gone to print earlier on the Thursday evening than the story broke about the injury so i don't see anything untoward.
