MILLDEAN SET FOR A RETURN TO ACTION

30/03/2012
John O’Flynn Snr yesterday confirmed that he hopes Milldean Panther will soon be resuming his racing career as he recovers from the injury which prevented his participation in the Easter Cup.

The dog was being checked yesterday evening by vet Ray Cuddihy but O’Flynn was very hopeful that the dog can have a trial in a matter of days.

Speaking yesterday, John said: “He is coming along nicely and his back problem seems to have disappeared. The Larry Dunne Open at Shelbourne looks a possibility but no firm decision has been made yet”.

Any doubts about the fitness of Milldean Panther were truly removed at Curraheen Park this evening when the John O’Flynn Jnr trained son of College Causeway covered the 525 yards in a sensational 27.87.

Milldean was having his first look at Curraheen but he ran it like a dream. He wasn’t the best away but quickly moved up in gears, railed magnificently and handled the track to perfection. Though no definite decision has been made, he is a possible entry for the two-run Formula One Grand Prix which commences next Saturday.

Will always be the hardest of dogs to beat with a run. Inspired effort by Piercestown Sand to beat him in the Gold Cup recently. If the Irish Derby was over 575yds you wouldnt be seeing the 6/1 quoted now, more like 7/2!

If so, sure it was hand-timed competently. Probably still a fast trial?

Milldean Panther has been confirmed as a definite runner in the Formula One Grand Prix at Curraheen Park on Saturday night.

The draw for the 12 dog stake is due to be made this morning and the John O’Flynn Jnr trained dog will be among them.

Racing manager Brian Collins has had a pretty difficult task filling the €2,500 for two-run competition over 525 yards due to the likely presence of Milldean which clocked a fantastic 27.87 in a solo spin around the circuit last Saturday.

Other entries for the Formula One Grand Prix include Mines A Pint, Cambushmore, Knockglass Billy, Cooly Colebe and Castlelyons Ralf but the list will not be finalised until this morning.

Saturday’s card will comprise of seven finals in all, headed by the McCarthy Group Insurance Cork Oaks, as well as a Novice 750 and an A2 525.

Mildean 3/10 with spoils to win his heat. Cambushmore 6/4. Thought Cambushmore would be closer to 4/6 than 6/4!. Should beat this lot easily

Panther has a good 4 lengths in hand on Cambushmore and would be no surprise to see him go faster in the final. His 3 main rivals in the Irish Derby betting all well beaten last night, sure there's an echo in here. Still the best dog in Ireland, imo, despite Big Mike's game Easter Cup victory last night Happy

Yeah he just is not going up that quick in my view, only barely managed to clear the 1 the other night. He showed great pace from halfway. I would have loved to see him entered for the 600 next week but that's obviously not an option now.

Plenty of time to get him ready for September, when it really counts. Panther has been getting a bit of stick coz seems he's lost a yard of early pace but his sire wasnt renowned for early sparkle either, yet College Causeway was still, arguably, the greatest Irish Derby winner of recent times! Fell out moves rails and near last too the bend, they move off and all sorts of trouble in front of him and he ends up in the lead off the 2nd Laugh Again showed impressive gears from the 2nd as he did last week and as BJG says ran right away from them but he can't get away with going up like that when upped in class again.

might be writing him off too early lads, he's had the s p u n k taken out of him big time and an injury in the last six months, we dont know how bad the injury was but i know professional footballers don't have it off the night before a game for no reason.

think we will be in awe again by december, his start just needs sharpening up and he'll be bang there at shelbourne Laugh

I'd never write him off, you can't write off a dog as fast as he is. I just have not been as impressed with him since Christmas as i was before.

i said before xmas doesnt matter how good this dog is he lacks e.p and will always have to do most races the hard way would be a absolute machine over 6 bends but that never gunna happen stud fees and all that Grin

But College Causeway never showed too much early either. I believe the dog has been injured also. You could see a different dog come September Wink
