ColonelsRib:  And I thought you were a youngster, you've done me with 1948.  I mentioned KP Lucky and Johnny Redwing because they were running when I first started going to White City and they were the biggest dogs I ever saw around there weighing in at 90lbs+.  The biggest open-racer I saw around there was "Cash For Dan" at a tiny 88lbs. The biggest I ever saw was "Cahumore Ranger" who Sid Ryall trained at Wembley.  Weighed-in at 96lbs!  Apparently, ate twice as much as any other dog in the kennels and only just got into the starting traps!

Tommy Unwin was unlucky not to have built a dog track at Enfield Town F.C.It was all in place with the football club but he needed the car park of The Starlight Rooms. From what I can remember whoever owned the land of the car park wouldnt sell.We went to some good Christmas kennel do`s at The Starlight. It was in a good position for a track, close to the M25 and on the A10.Come to think of it I dont think the M25 was built at the time.

Ashgrove Road was also trained by Paddy McEvoy (Wimbledon 1975).  Cant remember what distance he ran when he was with Joe Pickering - he had many dogs for Gordon over the years

"ColonelsRib".......Gordon sent "Ashgrove Road" to Paddy McEvoy because he wanted to try & turn the dog into a hurdler & win the Springbok.......he got that one right.

Tommy Foster later trained for him at White City & Wimbledon.

Sorry ColonelsRib you got me there.  As I said the two biggest dogs I ever saw at White City were the aformentioned KP Lucky & Johnny Redwing.  Maybe, the dog your're thinking of ran before 1969, if so, before my time.

Alf Ellis, you're no doubt right Deptford, I know he was a favourite of yours as well.

Michael earliest Gold Collar that I remember seeing is I'm A Smasher in 1978, trained by John Coleman ( had to look that up as I had forgot who the trainer was!) and the year after was Paddy Milligan's lovely bitch Gayflash, then it was Sport Promotor and so on.

The late 70's was when I really got the bug big time and absolutely loved those final nights like nothing else. Things a bit different now but we still have those memories.

Coloured race cards for owners, the owner of Chudalead, Alf? Used to grab hold of the railings during his races!! I had an even fiver with Sam and Alec and they were still arguing about laying evens 10 minutes later when it was 4/5 next door, the cracker with Red lipstick on the tote window in the other bar, near the food bit, a joy to behold, many a good night out with her, and what about Rough Diamond?

I've just remembered a grader from Catford that went on to make the headlines, reading this thread again stirred something in my noggin that I'd long since forgotten!

Graded hurdler "Seamans Star" was untouchable on home soil and local trainer Arthur Boyce targeted the inaugural running of the Grand National for his charge and he won it at Hall Green in 1985. Admittedly I did have to look up the list of previous winners to get the year!

Looking through that list two dogs jumped out at me as well, Topofthetide and Bobcol. Both without peer over jumps in their day.

Topofthetide was a great jumper slippy but Sherrys Prince was the best of them all bar none.

No doubt you're correct on that sparrow, just a bit before my time when Sherrys Prince was all conquering.

Was trying to think of Tonys Friend as another great hurdler.
