INJURED BLACKSTONE FOR STUD

Monday, July 19th

Having sustained a smashed hock in the final of the ECC Timber Open 525 at Shelbourne on Saturday week, it has been confirmed that Bar Blackstone will never race again and will be retired to stud.

A brilliant racer and winner of the St Leger at Limerick last year, the son of Head Bound and Blackstone Sky won sixteen of his 33 races and would have been one of the major fancies for the forthcoming Ladbrokes.com Irish Derby.

Owner Sean Dunphy confirmed the news this morning when saying: “He had a niggly hip muscle problem and that probably didn’t help him to go into the bend but, anyway, he smashed the hock and he won’t be running again. The leg is now in plaster and it will be probably be up to two months before he is able to commence stud duties”.

Dunphy confirmed that the dog will stand at stud with him and will serve bitches naturally. Bar Blackstone will be an interesting addition to the stud ranks, being a son of Head Bound and closely related to irish Derby winner Like A Shot.

Shaws Dilemma going for this Shocked
Report BJG July 19, 2010 10:21 PM BST
SHAWS DILEMMA, who delighted connections with a fast 28.77sec trial over Wimbledon’s 480m course on Friday, is being prepared for a crack at the Ladbrokes Irish Derby.

Rab McNair, husband of trainer Liz, said of the reigning Oaks queen: “We were absolutely delighted with the trial. She’d buzzed round Hove in a sprint the week before, and looks to be in great shape considering she’s only about 14 weeks out of season.”

Having missed the English Derby after the season broke, McNair confirmed that Shelbourne was next on the agenda for the strong-running bitch owned by Brendan Keogh and Simon Senyk.

PJ Fahy's dogs

Tyrur Lohan is something the forgotten dog as far as the Ladbrokes.com Irish Derby is concerned but owner P.J. Fahy is getting increasingly hopeful that the long absent star tracker will make it into the first round which starts on Thursday, August 5th.
A son of Hades Rocket and Tyrur Nuala, Tyrur Lohan produced a qualifying trial run of 28.44 and won his first race in 28.26 at Shelbourne. He followed up by winning the final of that Open Unraced Stake by six lengths in 28.44. He finished second in his first two ventures into open company and then won the first round of the Comerford Cakes by a length from Priceless Chef in 28.72. He was withdrawn from the second round and hasn’t been seen since.
Fahy sent him over to Charlie Lister to be prepared for the English Derby but he returned without a race in England and with an injury. Says Fahy: “It has taken quite a while for that cut on the foot to heal up but he has satisfied us in the last couple of weeks and will hopefully have a trial next week. He is in seriously good form but would have to go into the Derby without a race if the foot holds up”.
Fahy plans on having a team of up to twelve dogs in the Derby, headed by Tyrur Big Mike, Tyrur Enda, Tyrur Bucko, Tyrur Brennan and Tyrur Dylan. He says, “They have all had little niggles but they should all be okay for the start of the Derby”.
Unfortunately, the brilliant Tyrur Quinn will not be among them. He has a serious injury and is unlikely to race again.

NO RETURN FOR CAUSEWAY

Tuesday, July 27th

Reigning Irish Derby champion College Causeway will not be defending his title at Shelbourne Park next week. Owner Mike McKenna this morning confirmed that the fantastic tracker has run his last race and will be continuing his stud career at the Droopys Kennels in Portlaw.

McKenna had hoped to get the brilliant son of Go Wild Teddy back on the track to contest the Ladbrokes.com Irish Derby but time has run out and the dog will not be seen racing on a track again.

Said Mike this morning: “There were all sorts of rumours doing the rounds. He was supposed to be galloping and even in England but all the stories were off the mark. I would have loved to see him running again but it’s just not possible. He is doing extremely well at stud and will remain there”.

Michael Dunphy is naturally delighted that the Causeway will be remaining in the stud paddocks and said: “He has done very well so far. He has served about 120 bitches and straws have been sent to Australia and America. I am getting emails every day from Australia from breeders interested in his straws”.

Ladbrokes had offered an €80,000 bonus in the event of College Causeway repeating his Derby success but that money is now safe!

READY GOES FOR DERBY DOUBLE

Wednesday, July 28th

Last year’s English Derby winner Kinda Ready will bid to become only the second greyhound ever to do the double when he contests the 2010 Ladbrokes.com Irish Derby at Shelbourne Park next week.

Now with Ian Seymour and struggling to recapture the form that saw him overtake Fear Zafonic in that dramatic Wimbledon final, Kinda Ready has had a couple of races at Shelbourne.

As of 11 a.m. this morning there are 39 names in the book but with all the top kennels still to confirm their entries. For instance, P.J. Fahy has intimated that he will have 12 or 13 entries while Pat Buckley has intimated that he will be entering five.

The entries close on Friday morning and the draw will be made at 10 am on Tuesday with the first round heats then kicking off on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights of next week.

DERBY ENTRIES

FAHY ENTERS 19 IN LADBROKES IRISH DERBY

Thursday, July 29th

Ireland’s leading owner P.J. Fahy set what is surely a world record when he entered no fewer than nineteen dogs bearing the famed Tyrur prefix for the Ladbrokes.com Irish Derby which starts at Shelbourne next Thursday.

His huge injection saw the number of entries hit the 120 mark by lunchtime today and it now looks that the required 144 entry mark will be topped before entries close tomorrow night.

Fahy had stated a week ago that he hoped to have at least twelve Derby runners but a total of nineteen is quite staggering. What’s more, there is massive quality in there with the likes of Big Mike, Enda, Lohan, Brennan, Bucko, McGuigan and Dylan his main hopes.

The unfortunately injured Tyrur Brennan is the only confirmed non-runner in the second round of the Ladbrokes.com Irish Derby. He was due to contest Heat 9 on Saturday but that will now be a five dog race with trap six vacant.

Paul Hennessy reports that He Told Ted has a slight injury but a decision on his participation in Heat 12 will not be made until later in the week.

There have been four changes in seeding for the second round. Thurlesbeg Joker, Burn Em Up and Ballymac Under all switch from wide to middle while Clonkeen Stan goes in the opposition direction.

DERBY TRAINERS IN UPBEAT MOOD

Monday, August 16th

There have been no reported injury problems as far as the 48 remaining contenders in the Ladbrokes.com Irish Derby is confirmed. Indeed, all the trainers I spoke with today were very upbeat about their charges and looking forward to a “night of nights” at Shelbourne on Saturday night.

The third round is always the most eagerly anticipated round of the Derby as it brings all remaining contenders together on the same night for the first time in the classic. The draw has thrown up some really intriguing contests and it will be cut-throat stuff.

Dolores Ruth, who has three survivors, said that “it was a good weekend for us and all three dogs are in super form, there’s not a bother on them. I am happy enough with the draws and from here on it is all about Lady Luck and keeping the dogs in one piece. But I am hoping for the best and I couldn’t be happier with Makeshift, Razldazl Lord and Local Dee Jay”.

Her fellow Rathangan trainer Fraser Black, who also has three survivors, echoed her feelings. “I’ve no problems, they’re all okay after their runs and it’s all a question of keeping them sound. Krug Ninety Five is running on strong and I think he would even last 575. They’re all fine”.

“It is up to them now”

Another trainer with three challengers still standing is Paul Hennessy and he was his usual upbeat self as he reported a clean bill of health for his team.

“They’re grand, not a bother and we are hoping for the best. Barefoot Bullet probably needs to brush up on his starting a bit but he wants the outside box and he is in it, so no complaints there. The pup (Air Force Hawk) wants the inside and he is drawn in one while Colorful Champ is probably best drawn in three. He is in a very interesting race but it is up to them all now. Saturday should be a great night’s racing, there are some cracking races and the public will love it”.

Seamus Graham, who boasts the best record of any current trainer with three previous successes, has just Mesedo Blue this year but he was delighted with the dog’s run at the weekend. “He ran one of his best races and he showed real determination. I’m delighted with him but it is a tough race and he can afford no mistakes”.

“I’m hoping for a massive run”

Enniscorthy trainer Pat Gordon has two survivors and is hopeful that they can proceed to the next stage. “Fatboyz Tyson seems alright but I will be getting him checked out tomorrow.

There was some coughing in the kennel last week but I don’t think there is a problem. He seems to be hitting a flat spot down the back but he seems to be fine and hopefully he will keep floating along through the stake. I think Clonkeen Stan is improving and I would be hoping for a big run from him in the opening heat”.

Another handler with two survivors is Pat Buckley and he is also happy with his lot. “Both dogs are perfect. Hats My Boy is a lovely young dog and he is coming along all the time. I like him. Tullymurry Act is in great form and I would be hoping he would start to light up this weekend. I am hoping for a massive run from him”.

MONLEEK OK

Monday, August 16th

The rumour factory has been working overtime as usual and it is very encouraging to report that the stories doing the rounds about Monleek Bay are well wide of the mark.

The stories at Dundalk on Monday night had Monleek Bay as being out of the Ladbrokes.com Irish Derby due to a major leg injury but John Downey this morning assured Shelbourne racing manager Declan Carey that the dog has nothing more than a minor muscle problem.

Monleek Bay is due to contest the red hot Heat 3 in the third round on Saturday night where his rivals will be Definate Opinion, Jim Said So, Colorful Champ, Tyrur Big Mike, Cookies Fantasy and Monleek Bay.

Report BJG August 19, 2010 10:49 AM BST
Fears that injury may affect Definate Opinion’s Ladbrokes.com Irish Derby  challenge have been allayed by the dog’s trainer Pat Guilfoyle who reports that the dog will be fit to run for his life on Saturday night at Shelbourne Park.

The Cesarewitch and Dundalk International winner was disappointing in the second round when being overtaken by Blazers Black after looking an assured winner. However Guilfoyle cleared up the mystery when reporting that the dog was sore after the race but he is very hopeful that the problem will have been rectified before this weekend’s action.

Said Pat: “He didn’t run the third bend properly and gave away a few lengths on it. I knew there was some problem and it transpired that he was very sore in the neck and shoulders. He has been treated for it ever since and he seems to be almost perfect. I am very hopeful you will see a different dog on Saturday night”.

Nothing less than his best would suffice in Heat 3 on Saturday where Tyrur Big Mike and Colorful Champ will be high profile opponents and the race is completed by Monleek Bay, Jim Said So and Cookies Fantasy.

No other problems have been reported in advance of the third round heats. By the way, entries are invited for open races on the nights of the quarter finals, semi-finals and final. The final night card will include open races over every distance from 350 up to 850 yards and also an open bitch 525.

Grant is ok

The very welcome news to emerge on Sunday morning was that Westmead Grant is perfectly okay after that serious scare the previous night in Heat 2 of the Derby.

The dog checked up badly approaching the pick-up and was then carried from the track. The word spread like wildfire that he had sustained a broken hock.

However Fraser Black was able to report this morning that everything is fine with the son of Droopys Scolari and Mega Delight. “He is fine. The vet, Ted Collins, checked him out after the race and could find nothing and he walked to the van okay. This morning there is not a problem with him. It was strange but it probably was a dead leg”.

Thankfully the dog was injured to add to a horrific week for trainer Black. Two of his classy trackers Forest Boss and Must Be Cantona broke hocks on Friday and Thursday nights respectively while he lost two young dogs the previous weekend. He deserves a serious turn of luck. Who knows, perhaps in the Derby!

Think Tyrur McGuigan offers the only piece of value left in the Derby. 16/1 is huge with VC and 14's with the sponsors. He looks a carbon copy to Tyrur Rhino and has got the easier of the semi final draws. Very big price even if Big Mike looks flawless on what he's shown in the last two weeks!

the 50/1 tyrur mcguigan looks much much better because of the draw.  i think i was personally lucky there.  swap over the trap 5's and i wouldnt be so happy. Or even outside of bullet in this heat.  If we clear under, hoping tyrur makes it.

Got a few quid up to lay hats at 17.00,  just think foyle and tyrur go to the bend, and then you got hats-k95-bullet chasing 2 places to pip foyle.

My figures not far off yours Martys, except a minus for both Tullymurry and McGuigan, though bit more for Krug and Bullet and slightly less for Joker and Big Mike....

Will have a look at balancing the books either tonight or tomorrow, though I dont think McGuigan will win personally.

I could honestly see Joker going close if there was any trouble though with the favourite, would have caught Tullymurry last time out if he hadnt got hemmed in at one stage, though would be happy for Big Mike to skip clear and save any stress lol.

McGuigan's only hope is to skip clear and while he could lead, not sure he would stay far enough in front for long enough. Tullymurry also would probably have to lead and doesnt always trap the best, though has improved a bit lately in that respect.

Don't have much confidence in Bullet to get the job done either, seems to have looked a bit reluctant near the line or else has some stamina issues over 550.
Report allinadayswork September 9, 2010 6:37 PM BST
Krug has done the job for me anyhow with the e/w so anything else is a bonus though if there was trouble of course anything could happen I suppose.

As said earlier my Maths is awful, but think I've finally managed to work out the exact figures as it stands, I seem to win a bit more on some than I thought but a bit less on others as I forgot to substract the stakes of some of those I have in the final doh!!

Counting the each way bet as landed in amongst too:

Tullymurry Act - £9
Krug Ninety Five + £1141
Tyrur McGuigan - £9
Tyrur Big Mike + 1266
Thurlesbeg Joker + 1551
Barefoot Bullet + 841

Suppose it aint too bad as it stands really, might just have a token small bet on Act and McGuigan maybe at reasonable odds.

Report allinadayswork September 9, 2010 9:45 PM BST
Yes I think Joker should be third in the betting really, I can understand Tullymurry being 2nd fav as Joker will need to come from behind him probably but there was hardly anything between them on the last run.
Can't understand how Bullet and McGuigan have usurped the Joker as surely the second semi wasn't as good a standard overall.

agree m8 about tullymurray i can see him being better then 3rd around the first bend and with 3 stayers  behind him theres no chance for him to win should be around 6/1 not 9/2 .BIG MIKE TO WIN FROM THE BULLET IS MY F/CAST.[:)]
Report vinnie_roe September 9, 2010 10:14 PM BST
The only way i can see tullmurry win is if Mcguigan forces mike very wide between the 3rd and 4th bends, and the former gets a lovely run on the inside. The bullet could hold up joker as well.
Report lanza September 9, 2010 10:28 PM BST
im with vinnie, any trouble between 3/4 could see 5+6 dragged in, leaving a nice inside run for tully and k95 Sad
Report allinadayswork September 9, 2010 10:44 PM BST
Anyway backed Act and McGuigan to win about £200 each just to be on safe side, would be a big anti climax if there was nowt to come!!

I think if Big Mike comes away about level he ought to be OK as McGuigan didnt seem to go that wide on the run up itself and then he can maybe edge ahead, the problem would be if he missed it a few lengths.

But on times he has done 3 of the top 5 clocks this year over CD and 4 out of the top 10.

The Joker has 3 entries in the top 10 and 4 in the top 12 so shows how overpriced he is really.

Then we have McGuigan in 16th and Bullet in 18th, Act 21st and Krug uncharted, sounds like Top of the Pops!!

I think Mike would have been OK but missed the break when it was one time he really needed to be fairly close to McGuigan, once he checked out it was pretty much over for him.
Also Krug checked when challenging for the places and baulked Joker who was in behind and Tullymurry completely missed it so its a pity a few more didnt get the run of the race to make it competitive but thats racing as they say.

Report allinadayswork September 12, 2010 11:26 AM BST
Actually watching it again this morning Big Mike didnt miss it THAT drastically, wasnt particularly fast out but soon paced up, just that the early pace of McGuigan had taken him a few lengths up already. And if Big Mike wasnt going to lead by half way he wasnt really going to run down a leader given his style of racing.

Once he checked that was it really although he did close at three quarters didnt seem to be totally decisive in where to go, went wide and that was that.

Suppose Joker's lack of early pace was his achilles heel but never seemed to get a proper run in this event, in the Easter Cup probably the opposition wasnt quite as strong and he could get a better early position just behind the leaders.

Here he seemed to be off the pace and running into trouble all the time, got baulked about three times last night before running on into fourth.

But well done to McGuigan, having watched the race again can't see there was any fluke about it really.
