Given the world rankings set up , USA supporters are fully entitled to wonder why their "stars" ( their best ever team according to pre match hype ) underperformed in Rome .

Paul McGinley hit the right note early on when he voiced concerns that the USA team were under prepared for Rome , 3 of them not even making the trip to suss out the course when they had no other commitments . Not playing competitively in the 5 weeks before the event also a huge factor according to him , a fact agreed by Billy Horschel , who is one of the few USA players prepared to compete more than occasionally outside the USA .

Imagine a race horse trainer leaving his horse in the stables for 5 weeks before a race he wanted to win .

can't say i follow golf that closely these days but only koepka could realistically be described as a great of the game at this stage. maybe other multiple major winners in future but many previous american sides with far more star quality than this one
