Bryson fits the pattern of guys taking the money who one way or another are on the slide, either through injury, age, or loss of form. The OWGR site shows the rankings at the end of 2021 to compare to now, and it's striking how badly the LIV guys are doing:
DJ 3 > 15 Bryson 5 > 28 (injury effected, but no guarantee the injuries stop occurring) Oosty 10 > 20 I guess the pattern will continue on and guys who are heading in the wrong direction either age or performance wise will take the insurance policy of a big pay day (Reed, Fowler, Bubba, maybe Brooks with his injury problems), and to some extent you can't blame them- they are guys whose fame and reputation are a draw but their current performance is not, so why not cash in on that fame before it too fades. Not going to make for much of a long-term product watching the old and the infirm hack it round though. The big story comes if a big name or two who are on the upwards trajectory move over but if those guys hold fast then LIV will keep grinding on but no one will keep watching. |

Phil, Dj and Bryson were in the top 7 of the PGA Player impact program (the tours attempt to shovel barrow loads of cash to the big names to ofset LIV) with Bubba and Fowler set to join if they pick up Brooks they will have 6 of the top 11. These are the guys who draw viewers to tournaments and generate the internet traffic. Unlikely they will get one of the top guys in the short term but given Tiger is effectively finished Rory, Jt and Spieth aside none of the rest exactly move the needle or generate a great deal of public excitement. The field this week was stronger than expected. With 6 more Americans set to sign up next week the field strength will grow again and we are only part way through the first event. Aside from the signing on fees if the likes of Charl, Du Plessis or Peter 'korn ferry' Uihlein pick up over $4 million dollars tomorrow there will be more one or two of 20 - 50 ranked players glancing enviously. 6 of the 8 events are after the Open with 5 after the fed ex cup it is going to be rocky road ahead for the PGA tour. |

The interesting thing though is that yes, while like you say they are picking up guys with big personalities who move the needle as much for that reason as for their performances, the format and the presentation leaves no real room for personality to shine through. The shotgun start is so rushed it's just shot, shot, shot, shot to try to show as much as possible of the simultaneous action. And that might make for a lively broadcast but at the end of the day it could be anyone hitting them.
So we won't get the caddie chat of Phil or Bubba trying to think their way out of trouble spots, or the interaction with fans, or even Bryson or Reed arguing with rules officials, based on what I've seen so far they just will cut to them hitting then onto the next one. So the problem is that if your format and presentation relies solely on showing golf shot after golf shot with no wider context you need the best golfers, which they don't have, rather than just the big personalities. I don't disagree though that the PGA Tour are in more trouble than they probably thought they'd be at this early stage, and will have to ride out some difficult times. But unless there are big (but quite possible) u-turns from the top ten or so in the world, Liv are struggling too to have a product with any lasting interest. |

For all this is a big deal in the world of golf, the final round of one of the richest events ever created is being watched by an audience of 50000 on youtube.

Intrigued by the belching sounds, I popped my head in to the players dining area where they've created a Medieval Banquet feast.
Westy was hurling the devoured carcass's of roasted Swan and Peacock over his shoulder, while a court jester offered what looked like a gorged and bloated Phil Mick 'one more wafer mint?' To which Phil replied '**** off i'm full' ...it was reminiscent of the Mr Creosote sketch from Monty Python. Dj, Charl & Poults weren't at the table itself but they did have their own personal troughs. I couldn't help but notice that lots of players seemed to be pushing wheelbarrows around with washing instructions emblazoned on the side. The LIV slogan is 'Don't Blink' the only time they ask you to blink is when 9/11 is brought up. |

Rumours PIF have are in discussions to purchase the DP World Tour.
Would explain why they have not followed the PGA Tour with instant bans for players. |

will fields still be limited to 48? what will happen if a load of top quality players sign up after the last major and the lesser quality players are told they are not wanted anymore, will it be a case of going back to their tour asking for their place back, could be awkward

|

Abraham Ancer has also signed up - two of the top 20 this week.

DP World and the Asian tour haven't banned anyone. No one was banned for playing in the Saudi Invitational this year. Suspect there will be plenty in the top 100 probably top 25 who will be wondering whether they will miss the boat if they don't jump soon. Rumours that DP World have been in talks with LIV. If they have any sense they will align with Asian tour to create a world tour to sit alongside the LIV events. |

Still no future in what are basically exhibition events. Shotgun start has not worked with round still taking nearly 5 hours. Surprised CM is thinking about it but i guess everyone has a price. Although offering nearly a billion to Tiger and him turning it down shows the regard he holds for LIV...

PGA Tour set to introduce a 'liv style series of events'
8 events mainly in the fall - top 50 in the PGA Tour rankings from the previous season, no cut, with a $20 million prize fund for each event. Makes you wonder where they were squirreling away all that money previously. |

There will be a future given the funds backing it - whether it is a success is a different mater. Bit early to call whether the shotgun starts will prove popular. They certainly could add drama to the team events if they take over given the potential for swings at the end with everyone on the course. |
|
By:
The 8 events you are referring to Mighty looks to be spread across the year - Kapalua, Players, Riviera, Bay Hill and Memorial all to have big purses. 3 more events in the fall with big purses as 'international events' which sounds quite hopeful for someone who lives in my neck of the woods as a big money event at Royal Melb would attract a crowd. PGA Tour also reverting back to calendar year cycle and ditching the wraparound season. Change is definitely coming but no matter what they are do they are just outgunned financially.
Problem will be for the tour is that with LIV, the majors and now their own version of the Rolex Series, who is going to play Pebble, Torrey Pines, Quail Hollow, Scottsdale, Austin, Hilton Head... Great events on great courses with plenty of history and prestige - will they essentially be reduced to glorified Korn Ferry Tour events? |

In a way he's correct--it must be pretty hard and boring spending hour after hour practicing and going to the gym.
Now,on top of their huge one off fee, they are being well paid just for turning up to play in mickey mouse events you can't blame them from cutting back on the practice. The big names that have been paid £100+M could soon become shadows of their former self. LIV should have invested in Boxing. A sport crying out for reform with a much bigger following than golf. They might have ended up making a profit and having the support of the public. |

The big names that have been paid £100+M could soon become shadows of their former self. It is incredibly difficult to remain at the top level for a sustained period. Tiger and Jack apart even the best go through ups and downs with their form and most of your regular tour guys make most of their money points in a 4 - 6 week stretch. LIV should have invested in Boxing. A sport crying out for reform with a much bigger following than golf. They might have ended up making a profit and having the support of the public. The PIF are investing in many sports - they have hosted big boxing events in Saudi. The advantage golf has a sport over others is you can play with the best players in real time on the same courses. Attracting some of the best players in the world allows PIF to invite the world's richest business men to participate in pro-ams - the aim of the PIF investment is not to make a profit. |

grace got double what the irish open winner and john deere winner combined received. i watched the coverage on youtube and was impressed - no commercials and it was just shot after shot where you could hear them talk to the caddies. grace didnt have much to beat either - poulter garcia big phil to name a few about 10 over par and 20 shots back but still smiling around the course.
