Oosty, Sergio, Gooch, Na, Jones, Westwood, Kaymer, Poulter...
Better than I expected. I care less about the politics than I do it diminishing events on the PGA Tour and to a lesser extent, the Euro Tour. Would prefer a single event each week with the maximum talent available than having it split across events resulting in 2 inferior products. DJ has been in decline since start of 2021 but he remains a huge name and is a big get for LIV. Others will join, notice Chase Koepka is there. Brooks won't be far behind his mate and lil bro. Is it even on TV anywhere? |

Its on Youtube
DJ reportedly receiving £125 million upfront to play. The sums some have been offered are staggering. Suspect many more will go once the initial flack dies down. Can see this being the death knell for the european tour. Despite the criticisms around the field it has 17 of the top 100 wonder when the last time the euro tour had this number of top 100 in a tournament in mainland europe outside the scottish open? This week the Asian tour have an event at Slaley Hall with a £2mill prize fund which is higher than most european events. Think the euro tour have missed a trick not getting into bed with the saudis |

The European Tour have nothing to fear.
The Saudi's are after the very best and they are not found on the European Tour. Intresting to see how long they'll pump money into the LIV if the quality doesn't improve. |

haven't heard oh half of them!
Blake Windred, JC Ritchie, Jediah Morgan, David Puig. Who are they? The names you do know are all well well past their best, even DJ not the player he was. Graham Mcdowell, what has he won recently? Same goes for Westwood, Garcia, Kaymer. All strugglers on the PGA tour or any tour these days. Total damp squib. Wouldn't even bother going if it was free entry. |

Intresting to see how long they'll pump money into the LIV if the quality doesn't improve. In the short term they will struggle to get the top players from the PGA tour. They will be able to pick of the next tier down predominately euro/ global players like the south africans. This field is already stronger than virtually all DP world tour events in europe. The event at Slaley Hall for the Asian tour this week has a prize fund the same as the the DP event in Germany. LIV via the Asian tour will be able to put on events in europe that match outstip the DP giving players a place to play if necessary. It is a start up and will take time and some players will be cautious until the issue around majors is resolved but if the Saudi's keep offering the big bucks then it won't be long before players switch. I suspect they will be around a while given the money they offering. Tyrell Hatton has been reportedly offered 30 million and one of the amateurs playing has signed up for £5 million. Players will be cautious initially but once these events get going and the World number 187 is picking up multi millions others will follow. Ultimately players go where the money is. LIV are going to change the landscape of golf and the established tours especially the DP are quite rightly concerned. |

haven't heard oh half of them! Blake Windred, JC Ritchie, Jediah Morgan, David Puig. Who are they? Two are young aussies, Puig highly rated amateur - JC Ritchie 154 in the world - 10 wins in SA |

exactly, garbage compared to top level golfers.
Only 1 of the 48 would be less than 100/1 in a major on here. DJ is still in the 25/1 + bracket now. Mickey Mouse event. Just easy blood money for some of them, selling their souls for a few shekels. |

Oosty finished second in 3 majors last year! I guess if they had started three years ago with Morikawa Hovland and Matt Wolf you would have been asking who they were! Its a start up and overall a decent first field - stronger than the Euro tour this week for example |
|

decent field my jacksy, its a junk field lets be honest.
Has beens and players not done anything in the game. The Saudi's must be gutted with the field lining up. And some of those playing are in the Euro field this week and in the Memorial. None of them doing anything. Mickey Mouse event it really is. |

The Saudis would be very happy I think. They got DJ. One high profile player switching after saying they wouldn't is all they needed.

Agree with Mighty and Rhino
Decent first field and slowly they will come. The PGA tour are clearly panicking and suspect it will be final nail in the coffin for the Euro/DP Tour. If LIV are smart they will develop a global series of a dozen or so events to supplement the majors and then work with Asian tour to create a feeder tour. |

All its doing atm is diluting all comps

Hopefully they go ahead and enforce than bans for any player entering these events from playing in the majors or Ryder Cup. They can go where the money is as is their right, but they will never win any event that means anything.
|
|
By:
Neither the PGA Tour or DP World can ban players entering majors.
Doubt they will be able to uphold banning them from playing events on the tours. The lawyers will be licking their lips |
|
By:
Of course they can, they are contracted to the tour they sign up to each year. The majors are run by both the USGA an R&A. They may still be able to compete in the masters as its an invitational event.

Unlike the NBA, MLB and NFL, the PGA Tour considers golfers to be independent contractors, and they have to pay their own expenses, including extensive travel, caddy and coaching costs, entry fees, and even a $50 charge to use a tournament locker room. Golfers mainly get paid — not for participating in events, as most other professional athletes do — but via prize fees. For example, in the recent American Express tournament, 156 golf pros teed off, but four days later, just 70 of them received prize money, and only 33 of those made more than $27,000.
The R&A, PGA of America and USGA are separate organisations to the PGA Tour/ DP Tour |
|
By:
Mighty I agree, but it is the R&A who run the Open, it is their event and nothing to do with the DP as such. Check out the entry forms. As for the US Open and the USPGA, as far as I am aware these again are events which are independent of the PGA tour and run by the USPGA themselves?
|
|
By:
The point being that as they are separate organisations to an extent and they sanction the majors apart from the Masters, I would imagine they can quite easily stop players from entering such events.
|

Re the majors the guys choosing to play in LIV will find it hard to qualify, a ban likely not necessary. No OWGR points in team events, and won't qualify by winning a PGA Tour event, making it to East Lake etc.
DJ, Sergio be ok for Augusta, Oosty for The Open as past champions. After that I don't know how they'll get in unless they go through qualifying which is only for the two Opens. See Kevin Na has announced he has resigned from the PGA Tour. |
|
By:
USGA set the field for the US open - Why wouldn't they want the best players in the world participating?
PGA of America set the field for the PGA - They didn't ban PGA Tour players for playing when they broke away from the PGA of America - why would they ban players now? The point being that as they are separate organisations to an extent Not to an extent they are completely separate |

Mighty, I think they would want to prove their point by being stubborn regarding who they let in their events etc. I think they will make is as hard as possible for anyone that is putting $$ before history and prestige of events. If players are not making enough money is this era as it with with insane prize money levels and sponsorship, then they should be thinking about a different career imo.

Right you are. Point remains though, qualification still harder without being on the PGA Tour where a win gets you in The Masters as does a trip to East Lake. Don't (at this point anyway) envisage ANGC, USPGA, USGA or The R&A rushing to provide exemptions for wins on the Saudi tour and with the small fields OWGR points will be minimal until such time more top players inevitably make the switch. |

if the pga and euro tour ban these players, the LIV tour will end quickly..........not sure if they can be blocked from the us open and british open. but wimbledon just banned russian players. the masters is a private tournament. the masters answers to no one. they can ban anyone for whatever reason.
there will be no prestige in winning a LIV event. for the big players the cash will not compensate for not playing in the masters, players or pga championship. i assume DJ will now lose all his sponsors and forget about getting new ones unless they are saudi sponsors. he already has millions. he is making a big mistake. if the pga dont ban these players, they can kiss goodbye to the pga tour. the big players will just turn up for the maybe 10 events each year on the pga tour and for the other weeks play with LIV........the week to week events will be dead...all the big guys will be playing on LIV............they will be like the weekly euro tour events which have terrible fields............ if we ever have to listen to the opinion of the guys playing in LIV this week on golf or any other issue again, it will be hard to take........ i believe the european tour should be incorporated into the pga tour. there should be two events each week......the premier event held mainly in america but also having the british open, WGC in china and maybe new ones like scottish open.......even the irish open and aus open.......a tournament with all the top players in ireland or australia would get 50k spectators a day........the secondary tournament each week can be held 70 pct of the time outside america but also in america at the same time as the premier event. the attendances for the euro events are really poor. the top european players dont give a damn about the european tour. only time they play it seems is when they get appearance money. there have ben some european tour events held in scotland and england and they havent even turned up. the euopean tour really is dire. poor fields and low crowds. the middle east events seem to get good fields, i suspect because of appearance money. the latter really is a disaster for the game.......such money could be added to the prize money. |

I find it funny how everybody says everything but the truth. Its much easier if everyone says, I'm motivated by money and this tour has the most money. Id actually have no problem there but in the desperate attempt to not be judged Norman and players like Johnson are basically saying its about other things other than money. Its like a 20 year old blond girl with a 70 year old millionaire and them saying 'i love him for who he is'
In this moment they loose all credibility. I think fans and people in sport need to look to the reality. We have now seen it many years in football - people go where the money is. Its as simple as that. And actually what it does is the long term is raises prices, reduces motivation and reduces value for fans. At some point people will just give up on watching sport with passion, as they see the players only motivated by money and the sport has been dumbed down for tv (again to make more money) |

DJ 'chose what's best for him and his family'
Johnson, 37, joined the PGA Tour in 2008 and has won $74m in his career. "I don't want to play for the rest of my life, this gives me an opportunity to do what I want to do," he said. Ferk me, if I'd won $74m by the age of 37, I think I'd have already been able to do what I really wanted...... |

Dustin has been paid 125 million upfront to play 8 - 14 events a year I can see why he has done it and I am sure this will cushion the loss of any sponsors

This has already effectively happened. First with the brain drain of talent to the states and secondly with the strategic alliance. A lot of regular euro tour guys are very unhappy with the strategic alliance as it is reducing their playing opportunities and earning potential. LIV along with the investment in the Asian tour will finish off the DP world tour. |

Why would the Masters want to prevent the best players or past champions playing in their event? |

Think they have found a bigger hand to feed them. It will be interesting to see what the liquidity is like on these events given that they are free to watch and what the time delay will be vs people on course |
