Golfers who just disappear

Tim Clark, Matty Goggin, Ryo Ishikawa....

From 2006-2008, Trevor Immelman won two times on the PGA Tour, including the 2008 Masters and ranked as high as 13th in the Official Golf World Rankings.

Mike Weir after his 2003 Masters victory ?

Used to be a Aussie guy called ADAM on tour ?

I got the impression that victor the terrible suffered from mental problems. always seemed incredibly introverted for a golfer. some of them are quite reclusive of course but maybe he found dealing with the media and so on an intolerable burden?

or maybe he's just had injury issues.

but you're right mighty it's a fascinating concept that some of these sportsmen just seem to disappear off the radar.

https://www.nationalclubgolfer.com/news/what-happened-to-2014-ryder-cup-star-victor-dubuisson/

that article goes more into the story.

some people just lose their motivation. they do it from an early age, like kim and dubuisson, and then perhaps they grow to resent the game, and wish to do something else in life....

Dubuisson reportedly had a troubled back childhood and has a few issues he is scheduled to play in Hong Kong next week.

I suppose golfers are like the rest of society and all have their own demons heard Eddie Pepperell a few weeks ago saying he withdrew from the French open three weeks before the open because he couldn't face getting out of bed and going - a month later he had a second in scotland top 10 at the open and has gone on to good things.

Weir and Immelman just lost their form and still play when they can especially weir who turns up all over the place.

I was thinking more of the player who just vanishes often for no apparent reason.

golf bettors are also a good shout money

I wonder if eddie the eagle still punts and checks in on here

I was thinking more of the player who just vanishes often for no apparent reason.

but I think the reason is obvious- they fall out of love with the game. otherwise it would make sense to carry on, they can make far more from golf than they can from a regular job.

bobby fischer in chess is a famous example of someone who just disappeared from the map for twenty years.

There are so many guys that they can disappear for ages without even being noticed - Stadler was out for ages and I only really realised he was gone now he's played a few events.

One that came to mind is Jeff Overton, turns out he's had a hellish time of it but even as a Ryder Cup player what's been happening has barely attracted a mention.

Whatever happened to Heinz Guardian !

If we're hunting for lost forumites, surely abitofinterest has to put in an appearance if old Three Sticks gets it done this weekend.

Good article on Jeff Overton

Briny Baird record money without a win hasn't teed it up in nearly 5 years due to a bad back

Having a look down the PGA all-time list, couple of PGA winners who seem to have vanished:  Ryuji Imada, Nathan Green.  Green playing this week in Australia but doesn't seem to play abroad anywhere, Imada disappeared off the face of the earth.

Anthony Kim

Hunter Mahon was World #4 a few years back

Mike Weir is a great shout. He was a class act in his day. Then disappeared.

Mind you Glenn Miller was a class act too .............. then he disappeared.

Mike Wier ,how about Len Mattice who I'm fairly sure went 2/5 during Wiers Masters win.

Chris Dimarco

The RSM GROUP (Tax, Audit and Advisory Management Consulting) sponsor this weeks Sea Island PGA TOUR event.
Team RSM features PGA TOUR players Chris DiMarco, Zach Johnson, Davis Love III, Chris Kirk and Dru Love and European Tour players Andy Sullivan, Paul Lawrie, Paul Waring and Hinrich Arkenau.

a couple from yesteryear are Bill Rogers and Ian Baker-Finch, both won the Open and then totally fell apart

Smylie Kaufman.
Who?  A shot off the lead in the 2015 US Masters after three rounds.
In the last round started par, birdie, then dropped 10 shots in the last 16 holes, Willett picked up 5 shots over that stretch.

Michael Campbell seemed to go to pieces after a big win.

Matteo Manasero hacking about at 600 in the world after a great start to his pro career. Luke Donald gone to pot. I get the impression whats done these two is they just cant compete with the big hitters.

Bid hitters and comfort zones .  Too easy nowadays if you get to top 100 , just turn up and go through the motions .  Big difference from around 1950 when the winner of the Open got around £350 .  Wouldn't even buy a modest new car then .

David Duval

Aul Anthony Kim done me a good turn a few years back, winning the tournament just before the Masters.
If I remember correctly, him and Sabbatini nearly came to blows on the tee of a particular tournament.
I wish the lad well.

Jesper Parnevik

Rory McIlroy on a Sunday

bill rogers

Jordan Spieth?

notah begay

julian dicks.

fook me it's good olde Nazi loving Heinz! Where you been hiding me old mucker!

Villegas ?

Joost Luiten seems to have disappeared. Mikko Ilonen seems to have dropped off the radar as well.

Cheers for that, should really take more notice.

LUITEN 35/1 might be worth a cut this week (8th in 2016 in Dubai)

Answers to an awful lot of "whatever happened to...." questions can be found in this weeks Puerto Rico field.

Boo Weekly back on the web.com tour rehabbing after a couple of years out of action.

Puerto Rico seem to be struggling to fill the field as fast as an alternate is added they withdraw

boo weekly recently had cancer.

bit of a hard life I reckon, he looks well into his fifties, but only 45 apparently.

I can't remember seeing Kevin Stadler or Bill Haas for a while.

Is it Chris Di Marco? Was challenging for majors regularly about 10 years ago then was abducted by aliens or something

Ian - Haas is still out there and has played 8 times this season but his game is gone it seems, couple of top 20s in the fall but nothing this year so far.  Stadler had a serious hand injury that kept him out for more or less 3 years, made a few starts the end of last year but nothing in 2019 so maybe a re-occurance as he is entitled to plenty of starts with his medical extension.

DiMarco got a bad back and didn't play much in his 40s.  Turned 50 last year though and has been sighted a couple of times on the Champions Tour.

Di Marco.
Should really have won a Masters.
The year of Tigers famous chip in on 16.it was basically his until that went in.

The Nike badge, the wobble, the slow fall in to cup.

Unbelievable....

I think Di Marco finished top 3 at Hoylake when Tiger won....that's without checking!

Was up there all the time for a period Ian, don’t know if he’s on the senior circuit

Stadler has had a long standing wrist injury he couldn't grip the club. He did make a comeback at the end of last year but hasn't been seen in 2019 - think he still has a medical extension.

Haas is just playing poorly

Di Marco is on the champions tour these days

Thanks mighty white

Brett Wetterich briefly appeared in the Puerto Rico field but didn't take his place, that's another sad tale.  Felt his wrist pop hitting a shot during a practise round at the US Open 2008, and that was basically that, was never properly able to come back, from Ryder Cup to absolutely nowhere with one swing of the club.

“We’re on the 13th hole, I’m right in the middle of the fairway and swung, and that was it,” he says. “I heard a pop in my wrist, and knew I was in trouble.” Wetterich had suffered a similar wrist injury earlier in his career and remembered the hand issues and complications that followed.

“I knew I was done.”

back in the day, steven richardson and paul way disappeared rapidly

simon dyson's deterioration similar and Nick Doughety is another classic

luke Donald. world number one a few years ago, now a rare bird only sighted once a year at the rbc heritage.

had bad injury, was it wrist or hand?

Chris Reilly or Riley? Young American player I used to like - just seemed to disappear....

I looked up Smylie Kaufman, a shot off the lead in the 2015 US masters after three rounds.
This week he is world number 921 in the OWGR.
20 missed cuts, 1 withdraw, and a 69th in his last 22 tournaments.
If you are playing that poorly it must be obvious to a teaching pro what needs to be fixed.

Kaufman sighting, -2 through 5 in Texas.

-4 through 7.

2010 PLAYERS & 2014 RBC Canadian Open Champion Tim Clark - been inactive for so long that he's no longer even in the OWG Rankings - 43yo last seen MC at the 2015-16 CareerBuilder 152 weeks ago. The South African, who now resides in Scottsdale, battled through an elbow injury during the 2014-15 season but still managed to make the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

Mr Lu and Bobby Clampett. Isao Aoki seemed to drop out fairly quickly too.

David Lingmerth - was a time where he was a regular on the leaderboard and even took down Rose in a playoff if I recall correctly

One from this thread popping up this week in the US, the return of Bo Van Pelt after 3 1/2 years out.

There was a time about 5/6 years ago when I thought Quiros , Romero and Villegas would become top line pros -  but they have not really blossomed.
Don't know whether it's due to loss of confidence ,injury or deficiencies in technique.

Good effort from Bo to make the cut after so long out. I see the baby walrus is also attempting a comeback.

Delaet in this weeks field too.  If he's spent his two years out learning to putt watch out.

Tim Clark, Matty Goggin, Ryo Ishikawa....
Golf bettors who disappeared : Mr Meagi

Back with a bang at the ZOZO this week in Japan - shoots -2, 68 (Gary Woodland and Ishikawa were the only two players to shoot bogey-free rounds).
Asked about Woods' score, Ryo summed it up nicely: "Hearing he finished at -6 actually gave me chills."

Meanwhile..... we have Golfers who just appear

Josh Hill enters the record books but misses out on the spondoolies!
Englishman Josh Hill entered the record books becoming the youngest player ever to win an Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) event with his two-stroke triumph in the Al Ain Open on the Mena Tour.  But sadly, as an amateur he couldn’t take home his £10,000 prize money.
Hill won the event aged 15 years, six months and 27 days breaking the record of Ryo Ishikawa as the youngest winner of an official OWGR event.
Japan’s ‘Bashful Prince’ was 15 years and eight months when he won the Munsingwear Open KSB Cup in May 2007.

Here's a reminder of one of golf's good guys who was lost so tragically 20 years ago today

Failing that it's on the PGA Tour website .............

If you want to be reminded of jorneyman golfers who you had forgotten about I suggest a quick look at the bermuda championship

Remember when Brendon Todd was almost a Ryder Cup pick...
...finished a career-best 27th in the 2014 FedEx Cup standings, after victory in Texas in May.
Then we almost forgot who Todd was...
Now Brendon's a PGA Tour winner again.
