((((( U.S. OPEN )))))

DJ not arriving til Tuesday at the earliest although has been there already.  Rough looks pretty ridiculous.

Fairways generous though?

Whispy rough though, not the thick cabbage. Still, it's about two feet tall so good luck.

Cancel that, it's plenty thick. The issue may not be with hitting them but finding them. Kevin Na is already a broken man

Justin Thomas is the bet this week

Catch Me ifyoucan • June 3, 2017 10:43 PM BST Mickelson said he will wait to withdraw from the event in order to allow himself the possibility to play should some “unforeseen circumstance,” like a first-round weather washout, allow him to make it from California to Wisconsin in time. He has up until his tee time to actually withdraw. Mickelson chose to inform the USGA of his situation, allowing an alternate to properly prepare for the event and the USGA to plan its first- and second-round groupings accordingly.

Early money for Day. I make him a clear second favourite here behind DJ, have taken my share. Had a fair bit on Dufner at 80s and 85s as well, current and event form both top notch. All the talk is that the course doesn't play close to the actual yardage, so given the density of the rough it could be a fairways and greens type that goes well.

Re the yardage, apparently JDay can reach 18 hitting 2 iron off the tee and 2 iron in. Not sure if that is from the very back or not though.

Eternal question is weather length or accuracy preferred, as in a US Open you'll generally need a combination of both.  Na's video suggests accuracy, as that rough could result in lost balls or several shots gone hacking out.  That said, I believe the fairways are wide so you need to be pretty crooked to get there.  Not really reached any firm conclusion other than to swerve the guys who tend to produce the BIG miss when it goes wrong.  Although Phil's probably not playing anyway.

Kisner being smashed everywhere

what the feeling about hideki?

I was reading about Kaymer winning this in 2014.......he just ran 'scared' out in front. I'm looking for a runner here, a guy that can run like Forest Friggin Gump and  a guy who can stay out of the Naaaaasty Stuff at Erin Hills. I could be a sentimentalist and go with Gary Woodland but that's not my style......so I went with this instead.

Brian Harman 430.00 €24.60  €10,553.40 (Out early, hits it straight and can run scared)  Go Forest Go!

(This is going to make for compulsive viewing but it  looks like a plastic ceiling for splashing cash on.)

O.K. here goes :-

J Spieth @16.5
R Fowler @26
J Rose @29
T Pieters @55
P Casey @65
L Oosty @75
D Berger @90
M Leishman @110
A Hadwin @270
S O'Hair @290
B Steele @400
B Harman @480

Saved some for in-running obv...........

GL peeps..............

Graeme McDowell:''As for the greens, they are sneaky severe so next week you are going see big numbers and it would not surprise me seeing guys making double digits on some holes whereas I can see guys also shooting 66s as well."

Is that what we want? Imagine a Grand National where someone put 10 bags of cement in some of the fences.

Carnage! Do we want to see Dustin getting a 'double digit' hacking out of hay?? I know the bookies do.

Much prefer this to the target golf we get most weeks. A severe test of all facets and a traders dream if you've got knowledge and time.
Fwiw I'm going heavy on jb holmes. Hugely erratic at the moment and just as likely to throw In a 74 as a 64 but if it is a bombers paradise he may get hot. Nice early start as well. I'll pad out my team with Sergio, Adam Scott and Fowler. Two of the purest ball strikers on tour, decent short games but hideous putters. For them to still be major winners with their putting fragilities says a lot for their tee to green games.
And Rickie Fowler, fantastic short game, awesome putter, proper grinder but hot and cold off the tea.
That's me done for the week. All bases covered, good luck one and all

It's US OPEN week
Dustin Johnson 8
Rory Mcilroy 14

CUT is lowest 60 scores (& ties) and an 18-hole playoff Monday if two or more players are tied after 72 holes.

Haven't had a playoff since 2008, let's hope they don't have one this year. The 18 hole thing surely has to go at some point, just doesn't seem right in the modern day. As long as they're not happening though I suppose it won't be talked about.

LIKE RORY Charl Schwartzel Kevin Chappell Billy Horschel Bud Cauley & Ross Fisher

Brian Harman 430.00 €24.60  €10,553.40 (Buy)
Brian Harman 360 €24.60  €8,831.40 (Sell)

I've just 'cut the legs' off Forest Gump. Leaves a €1700 'freebie' and ......business is business.

The Rory drift halted quickly enough.

Now, let's attempt to get another 'freebie' with this play.

Harris English 390 €24.60  €9,569.40

He is improving as the year progresses(he needed to).
If this was the Franklin Shootout........he would be fav.
I rate his Farmer's form and he is an amazingly good scrambler from close in. He has the same chance as all others off those roller coaster wide fairways and his price has been steadily rising. My kinda guy for the job in hand...ie if I am left with it ....no worries.

Yes it did. Was looking for a reason it turned so quick but no reports of ripping it up in practise, no perceived draw bias, nothing. Guess it's just the faithful signing in.

From PGA site

Because Erin Hills is exposed, wind is a natural defense. Then, because there are few if any cues to determine its direction, the challenge is compounded. A prevailing wind from the west and southwest is expected throughout, but its impact on club selection may be relevant only with the proximity of storms that are forecast early on both Thursday and Friday, and again later on Friday.

Late starters on Thursday may have a weather advantage

If the predicted storms arrive on Thurs morning we'll know Phil's name is on the trophy.  Really should be in the market til he actually WDs.

Slybet, Joke Orals, PP and BF sportsbook all offer 1/5 first 8 for e/w backers

surely with all the rain around that points to rory- given his history of winning majors at rain soaked venues.

I'm aftertiming here but I don't think I've had a winning bet in 2017 on football, golf, horse racing.
€40 at 180 on Tyrrell hatton, and €12 at 380 on Brian Harmon (advised by a poster earlier in the thread).
This will make a Change.  I usually like to lose €500.

WHEN Dustin Johnson won the 2016 US Open his previous form figures coming into the tournament was knockin' on the door with 5th,3rd,12,28,4th,3rd,8,14,4th,41,18 & 10th.

Jordan Spieth in 2015 was 'on fire' with 3rd,30,2nd,mc,64,11,WIN,2nd,2nd,WIN,17,4th,7th,mc & 7th prior to his win.
Luckybag Kaymer putted from everywhere on No.2 in Pinehurst with previous form figures of 12th,29,WIN,18,23,31,mc,58,mc,64,53 & 57th in 2014.
Justin Rose had only two 2nd place finishes in the months before his 2013 win (with 8th,50,mc,15,25,2nd,8,4,32,16 & 2nd).
While Webb Simpson had nothing to write home about prior to his 2012 win (very poor prior form of mc,mc,4,13,52,44,36,10,35,64,8,38 & a 3rd place).

IF WE GO BY PRIOR TOURNAMENT FORM then Dustin is a cert closely followed home by Tricky Ricky and Johnny RAMBO

My 7 against the field :
Rose, Pieters, Casey , Grace, Schwartzel, Noren and Fitzpatrick
Good luck all

Haven't had a playoff since 2008, let's hope they don't have one this year.

NOTE IN 2010 Gregory Havret needed to hole an eight-footer on 18 to force a play-off with GMac (alas, he missed it - a footnote in Major golf history).

this week looks ripe for a M Campbell result

ALL IRISH EYES will be on our lad Paul Dunne who qualified for his fourth Major start - albeit on the first extra hole of a seven-man playoff - at Walton Heath. The US Open will be his first Major in the USofA while he’s twice missed the cut in our OPEN Championship, the one time he played the weekend he famously led on Sunday at The Old Course in St. Andrews. He recently came mighty close to his first European Tour title down Morocco way followed by a T30 in Wentworth.

OUR other rep is Shane Lowry who was a surprise 54-hole leader last year at Oakmont. While Lowry knows he fcuked up that four-shot lead (and finished T2) - the WGC-Bridgestone champion has a brilliant short game and still believes he has all the skills to win a Major. Shane finished T6 at Wentworth and T15 at Jack's Memorial so 'stick to the ground hurling' Shane !!!

Morning...
Rickie Fowler 7:51am *
Kevin Kisner 8:24am
Billy Horschel 8:24am
Dustin Johnson 8:35am *
Afternoon...
Rory McIlroy 2:09pm

Watch out for the Signature Hole #9 - a 165yd shortish par3 with a domed putting surface reminiscent of Pinehurst No.2. The green is virtually an island due to the amount of sand and fescue around it & the tee shot plays a bit downhill which can cause havoc when their famous winds are whipping through the course.

Love the look - "bucket list golf"

my first bet, thinking about nice and steady and to keep cool is gonna be steve stricker, he could do quite well keeping out of trouble and his putting should  be useful in keeping the 3 putts off, obviously he doesnt play alot anymore so while that is an issue it doesnt seem to have the same effect on him as it does most players and at 180/1 i think its a nice little eachway bet. There is also normally one of the older guys who plays well as there is usually a youngster who ends up taking an early lead or being at top of the board towards end of the first day but i cant eally decide who that could be this year.

Market been hovering around 110-111% all week. Very strange for a high liquidity event. Don't see any OMG/WTF prices on the board anywhere. Quite a few I don't understand how punters can justify backing. Hopefully some serious drifts in the next 24 hours.

Layers wary after the Masters. If Dustin can make it down the stairs in the morning they might find their laying boots.

Fairways even wider now, they cutting the rough back

The "New" Dad's a cert it seems

Coetzee is now fantastic value!(as predicted earlier in thread)

George Coetzee 460 €13.00  €5,967.00

Speaking of value........what can you buy for €2 euro these days?

Jim Furyk 570 €2.00  €1,138.00

Someone looking to back Bourdy to win a penny or two.

And a few other rags.

Looks like he's backing 5 to win between 1 and 2 mil apiece.

Just a bluff to gets his lays matched. It will disappear, did the same with Knox and Kokrak earlier this week with bigger sums. On another note, where are all the side markets?? Very small menu on offer

Possibly although there was a few hundred available on Bourdy at 1000 earlier and I think 500 on Stuard.Hard to lay them all back. He's also taken the other 3 to near there lowest matched price.

Jason Day @ 16
Ross Fisher @ 230
Jimmy Walker @ 220
Ryan Palmer @ 440

amazing I backed spieth at 7-1 a few weeks ago for this and now 16-1!

shows how pointless it is taking early prices!

anyway had to top up at that price...

westy 150   weisberger  150  grillo 190  and mcdowell 210 carrying my little 10er bets, just got a feeling g mac may actually go well,i never ever back him  normally.

my concern would be gmac is too short for this course, isn't he one of the shorter hitters

think you need some sort of length off the tee

keep topping up..only one in a field of bottlers with a winning mentality
if he finds his mojo to any degree will hose up

my starting 2 bets are Jason Day eachway and steve stricker to win @180, i would have done eachway but the bookies are offering nowhere near 180 on stricker so i will hope he plays well and then just lay off if he gets to a lowish price

Im slowly shifting towards the bombers here!Even more so if damp tomorrow!

Moved a bit of my big priced shorter hitters on to the likes of Day,Koepka, weekly losses,Fowler,Noren,Horschel,Louis,Woodland...

Like Dufner and Kisner of the fairway n green brigade!

Looking forward to this immensely!

Looking forward to this too! Go Woodie!

Utter nonsense this trimming the rough too by way..Pampered pros, well said Rory even though i am against him this week!!!Purely on match practice!

got to be agin mincer mc

This is usually my favourite event of the golfing calendar.

However, with fairways even Seve couldn't miss then you don't need to be accurate. Cannot believe the USGA cow towed to journeymen whinging golfers like Na. FFS this is meant to be the toughest major where winning score is around even par.

The top pros and pundits think they will go birdie crazy this week. Soft and ridiculously wide fairways and holding greens. Wind not meant to be anything untoward and four par 5's. Sorry but birdie blitz golf isn't my thing. We have enough of those resort courses ripped to shreds.

11 under or lower is favourite at 5/4. Worse than - 6 is 9/4. Never thought would see that at what is meant to be the toughest major.

Not sure it will work out that way though charwell, we will see. Day is saying the winner may be over par, though I do doubt it.

I've never seen a course with such long par 4 holes.
If a player can't fly the ball 320 yards off the tee they might struggle.

€40 on Jordan Niebrugge at 350.
He isn't playing on the big tour.  He might like the long course.

I agree and the fact that he played well the only time he played at this course points to a potential big week

if you look at the strike rate of the big names in the majors then two players stand out a mile that's spieth and mcilroy who both have about a one in eight strike rate... which suggests that they have bigger cajones than most of the other players

also had to add reed as 90-1 was just too big... this is a guy who dominated the ryder cup essentially and he's also done well in the US open in the past

disagree that the winning score will be double digits... is anyone playing well enough to make that score on a course where getting up and down could prove very difficult? personally I doubt it

Not sure I sure the market's enthusiasm for JT (famous last words)?  Won a few diddy off-season events and now 8 points better than the Open champion around a links-style major?

Who do you fancy, TB...?

Of the main contenders, the open champion looks like the best value to me.

Cheers

Hi lr, this is your latest.............''also had to add reed as 90-1 was just too big''

Are you betting on golf or writing a letter to Santy?? How many have you got now?

You nearly have as many as I have and mine is called 'a portfolio' Anyway, best of luck!

really like Thomas this week.

As for stenson, I would be concerned that because the three wood seems to be the best club in his bag, the fact that he might be forced to pull driver a lot would count against him. Is he long enough with the three wood around here?

Not to mention that his us open record is fairly poor overall.

mr meagi I've backed a few my biggest winners are Thomas and reed

so far I've backed Thomas, reed, mcilroy, spieth, fowler and hideki. I haven't backed anyone else, not yet anyway.

is this particularly unusual for a golf punter? I suspect there's plenty on here who have backed far more.

tempted to add

Bryson de chambeau
steve stricker
brooks koepka

so when one of those hose up and I haven't got a bean on I will be

I also don't quite understand what you mean by portfolio? what is what you're doing any different to what I'm doing?

Hi lr, I thought you had more than 6....I have a 'portfolio' ie more than 10 .........ie I have at least 10 1000/1 plays for 2 euro.......I cannot have any 'claim to fame' unless Chris Wood wins for me as I made the case for him earlier. I bought English as a buy to sell and got left with him........that does not count..........check my match bets this week. What do you think. And good luck!

added j thomas at 35/1 and trying to back  big phil at 110, lewisham , i don't doubt theres many reasons not to back  mac but you don't need many reasons to back a 200/1 poke.

http://www.usopen.com/scoring.html

This might help!

ok   i see,   added beoung hunan at 170 instead.

Surprised some tool hasn't put up a ((((( US OPEN DAY TOOOOOOO ))))) thread yet

Oh it's 2017 btw

Meanwhile......

Ireland's Leona Maguire on Saturday defeated Spain's Ainhoa Olarra, 3 and 2, at Pyle and Kenfig to win the Ladies' British Open Amateur Championship. Maguire, the top-ranked amteur in the world and two-time Annika Award winner, defeated Finald's Anna Backman earlier in the day to secure her place in the final.

The former Duke Blue Devil now has a place in the field for both the U.S. Women's Open and the Women's British Open. Maguire won the Smyth Salver as the low amateur at the Women's British last year.
She is also already qualified for year's fifth major, the Evian Championship, via the Annika Award.

Brooks Koepka didn’t just make his mark on the PGA Tour by earning his first major championship with a record-tying 16-under showing at the U.S. Open. He also pocketed a record $2.16 million in the process.
This year’s $12 million purse was the biggest in U.S. Open history and the most lucrative on the PGA Tour. That marked a $2 million increase from last year’s event, where Dustin Johnson pocketed $1.8 million by gutting out his first major victory.

Here’s how this year’s U.S. Open payout compares to the game’s other three majors:

• British Open: $8.3 million (2016)
• Masters: $10 million

2018 US OPEN

The USGA has kicked off the journey to Shinnecock Hills for 9,049 applicants - the sectional qualifying for 2018 began at Gleneagles Country Club where a 6-under 66 from Aaron Guanlao, a senior at UT-Arlington. Local qualifiers will be conducted until May 17, with only 500 players advancing to sectional qualifying from a group of more than 8,500 entries. A total of 54 out of 156 spots in the final field have already been claimed by players who are fully exempt for the season's second Major, which begins on 14th June.

FOR THE 5th TIME in its history dating back to 1892, famed Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y., will play host to the 117th playing of the US Open in 2018.

Moments after signing for a 3-under 69 Sunday at the Memorial, Rory McIlroy’s attention had already shifted to the next challenge.
“I'm happy enough with that and feel like I've seen a lot of good stuff over the last couple of days to give me encouragement heading into the U.S. Open,” he said after a T-8 finish at Muirfield Village. McIlroy said he planned to travel to Shinnecock Hills Sunday night to begin his preparations for the U.S. Open. In fact, the Northern Irishman revealed he plans to spend the next two weeks on Long Island. “It's better to practice there than it is to practice down in Florida this time of year, just it's soft and rain and humid,” he said. “I'm actually just going to play a few other golf courses around the area the next few days and sort of relax and take it easy up there.”

McIlroy, who will be joined by Phil Mickelson and a handful of other players on Monday at Shinnecock, was particularly pleased with his putting and wedge game after playing his final 36 holes at Muirfield Village in 11 under par. He wasn’t as pleased with his driving after hitting just 39 of 56 fairways at the Memorial.
“I feel like I still need to drive the ball a little bit better,” McIlroy said. “As long as I can keep the ball in play at Shinnecock, I feel like I'll have a good chance.”

After missing out on another chance to secure a spot in the US Open, Adam Scott remains torn about whether or not he’ll make his first-ever appearance at sectional qualifying.

Scott entered the week at No. 65 in the World rankings, with the Top 60 on 11th June earning exemptions to Shinneock Hills.

Scott is entered in the Columbus sectional, annually the strongest field that has the most qualifying spots available, and is slated to tee off at 8:30 a.m. ET Monday at Brookside Country Club alongside Jason Kokrak and K.H. Lee.
Scott has played in 67 straight majors, a streak that dates back to 2001 and is second only to Sergio Garcia (72) among active players.
